At the weekend, Vice President Yemi Osinbajo said that the politicization of the means of purchasing weapons indicates that “we must manufacture our own arms.”
The vice-president made the remark at Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU), Ile-45th Ife’s convocation lecture.
“We must be smarter in policing the country using smart drones and surveillance equipment,” he added, citing the “insecurity problem that we are experiencing, the rise of terrorism in some parts of the country, and non-state actors’ access to illegal weaponry.”
Profex, a Nigerian company, is already producing APCs and exporting them to several African countries, he revealed.
“Other companies, as well as the government-owned Dicom, produce various types of ammunition. Yes, there are numerous challenges, but the means to overcome them, as well as the necessary elements, are already in place. Young Nigerians are rising to meet the country’s challenges.”
