Gambo Aliyu, the director general of the National Agency for the Control of AIDS, NACA, has cautioned Nigerians against engaging in strange behavior on February 14 because it could put them at risk for contracting deadly diseases like HIV.
In a statement he signed, Aliyu claimed that most people, particularly young people, engage in sexual activity with the other sex on Valentine’s Day. He noted that this is because they have misunderstood the holiday’s true meaning and why it is celebrated.

He claims that many people engage in risky behaviors during this time, increasing their risk of contracting sexually transmitted diseases like HIV/AIDS.
Although Valentine’s Day is significant to people all over the world, Aliyu continued, it also gives rise to a lot of concern because expressions of love, particularly among adolescents, young people, and other diverse populations, frequently occur out of context.
He urged the youth to show love in the context of deeply caring for their loved ones in order to keep them safe from all harm and steer clear of situations that might put them at risk for HIV/AIDS and other sexually transmitted diseases.
