Adewale Adeniyi, the acting comptroller general of the Nigeria Customs Service, has cautioned staff members to use tactic instead of force when interacting with the public.
Adeniyi made this declaration on Thursday during the official opening of a workshop on raising awareness about the actual implementation of the Nigeria Customs Service Act 2023.
Comptrollers and assistant legal advisers were the target audience for the Abuja workshop.
Guns should only be used in dire situations that call for self-defense, according to Adeniyi.
He commanded, “We must never, under any circumstances, use firearms unless absolutely necessary. We must safeguard the people who live in this nation.
While this is going on, the Senate on Thursday urged the Federal Government to use the N14.2 billion already allocated in the 2023 budget to build the Nigerian Customs Academy in Bauchi State.
It also instructed the newly formed Committee on Customs, Excise, and Tariff to take charge of overseeing the building and completion of the envisioned one-stop shop operational centre for the revenue-generating agency.
