The Treasury Department said that the US has placed fresh penalties on persons linked to Nigeria’s militant organization Boko Haram.
Six Nigerian citizens have been sanctioned after being found guilty of setting up a Boko Haram cell in the United Arab Emirates to gather cash for Nigerian militants.
On Friday, Under-Secretary of the Treasury Brian Nelson stated, “With this action, the United States joins the UAE in addressing terrorist funding networks of common concern.”
“The Treasury Department continues to pursue financial facilitators of terrorist action across the globe. “We support global efforts against the Boko Haram network to guarantee that it cannot transfer any more monies via the international banking system,” he said.
Abdurrahman Ado Musa, Salihu Yusuf Adamu, Bashir Ali Yusuf, Muhammed Ibrahim Isa, Ibrahim Ali Alhassan, and Surajo Abubakar Muhammad were found guilty in the United Arab Emirates of trying to transfer $782,000 from Dubai to Nigeria.
For breaking UAE anti-terrorism regulations, Adamu and Muhammad were sentenced to life in jail, while Musa, Yusuf, Isa, and Alhassan were sentenced to ten years in prison followed by deportation.

“All property and interests in property of the individuals named above, and any entities owned, directly or indirectly, 50 percent or more by them, individually, or with other blocked persons, that are in the United States or in the possession or control of US persons, must be blocked and reported to OFAC,” according to the Treasury.
In 2013, the US branded Boko Haram as a “foreign terrorist organisation.” The gang is “responsible for many assaults in the country’s northern and northeastern areas, as well as in the Lake Chad Basin in Cameroon, Chad, and Niger that have murdered hundreds of people since 2009,” according to the State Department.
Separately, the Treasury identified five people and five organizations linked to Myanmar’s military. The action occurred after the United States announced that Myanmar’s army had committed genocide and crimes against humanity in its attacks on the Rohingya minority.
