The Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities (SSANU), University of Nigeria Nsukka (UNN) chapter, has elected Comrade Linus Akata as its new chairman.
Akata and other candidates were elected without opposition at the association’s quadrennial congress, which took place in Nsukka on Friday.
Additional newly elected executives comprise Mr. Samuel Okoh, Mr. Ifeanyichukwu Ozioko, Vice Chairman; Mr. Chukwuma Nwagwu, Treasurer; and Mr. Ejike Egwuagu, Financial Secretary.
Additional individuals include Mr. Charles Akan, the Public Relations Officer; Mrs. Blessing Obi; Mr. James Nwachukwu, the Assistant Secretary; Mr. Friday Nweke Trustee, ex officio; and Mrs. Mercy Ilechukwu, the Woman Coordinator.
Shortly after taking office and taking office during the Quadrennial Congress, the newly elected chairman promised to prioritize worker welfare in his acceptance speech.
Comrade Paul Erua, whose eleven-year term had come to an end, was succeeded by Akata. Erua had served three years as interim chairman and four years in each of his first and second terms as UNN-SSANU chairman.

He thanked UNN-SSANU members for considering him deserving of leading the organization’s operations for a four-year term.
“I am thrilled and humbled by the members’ unwavering confidence in me to lead them as their chairman.
According to today’s final report from the Electoral Committee, the sale of intention forms for this election began in November 2023, and I am the only one who bought a form for chairmanship.
“And members turned out in force to affirm their faith in me during this Quadrennial Congress; I will not take for granted what SSANU-UNN has accomplished today,” he declared.
He conveyed gratitude to the SSANU National Secretariat team, headed by Comrade Ken Njoku, the National Vice-president, South East, for their unwavering dedication in guaranteeing an impartial and impartial election process.
The most recent Treasurer, Akata, expressed his gratitude to Erua, with whom he had worked closely and gained a great deal of knowledge from his capable leadership.
The election of new executives, according to Njoku, was the SSANU Quadrennial Congress’s high point.
The vice president thanked UNN-SSANU members for making his team’s work easier.
According to the Election Committee’s final report, which was presided over by Comrade Martin Arumede, only one candidate was chosen for each position, including chairman, vice-chairman, secretary, treasurer, and financial secretary.
“I urge other branches of SSANU in the country to emulate UNN, commending the unity and maturity of UNN-SSANU that has made the assignment of my team from the SSANU National Secretariat easier.”
“The newly elected and inaugurated executive should return the favor by bringing everyone along and putting employee welfare first.
“I express my gratitude to Erua and his team for their outstanding performance, which is documented in their stewardship report,” Njoku added.
Erua had earlier expressed gratitude to SSANU members in the UNN for their cooperation and support during his 11-year administration in a farewell speech.
Among his accomplishments, the recently appointed Chairman mentioned hosting the SSANU National Delegates Conference, completing the construction of a pharmacy shop, and operating a filling station using built-operate transfer (BOT).
In addition, he made sure that the UNN’s scheme of service for non-teaching staff was reviewed, purchased a Highlander Jeep for UNN-SSANU to improve logistics, and made it easier for more than 500 members to receive their N30,000 monthly hazard allowance. (NAN)
