256 passengers were safely removed from a United Airlines flight headed for the United States that made an emergency return to Lagos on Friday by the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) rescue team.

All passengers and crew disembarked safely, according to FAAN’s Director of Public Affairs and Consumer Protection, Mrs. Obiageli Orah, who confirmed the air return.

But according to her, 27 passengers and five staff members had minor injuries, while four passengers and two crew members suffered critical injuries.

She claims that at 23.59 p.m. on Thursday, the United Airlines Boeing 787-800 took off from Murtala Muhammed International Airport (MMIA), Ikeja, but it returned to the air and touched down safely at 3.22 a.m. on Friday.

There were 11 crew members and 245 adults on board.

When the plane safely parked for deboarding at D31, the team from Aerodrome Rescue and Fire Fighting Services, Aviation Medical, and Aviation Security were already at the gate. At 3.37 a.m., the door was opened.

“Although every passenger and crew member disembarked without incident, two passengers and four passengers suffered serious injuries, and another 27 passengers and five crew members suffered minor injuries.”

“The rescue crew was on standby and vigilant, and they responded quickly and efficiently.

The injured passengers were taken by “aviation medical ambulances, some to the Headquarters Clinic and others to the MMA Clinic,” she stated.

Orah added that while those with more serious injuries were stabilized and moved to the Duchess Hospital in Ikeja, others with minor injuries received first assistance and were released.

She added that there was no significant damage to the plane and that some passengers were transferred to a hotel for lodging.

She stated that “the authority will continue to provide updates.”
