The United Kingdom has said it will ‘move beyond the outdated models of patronage’ to reconnect with African countries in its partnership approach.
The new UK Minister for Africa and Deputy Leader of the House of Lords, Ray Collins, who is the Lord Collins of Highbury, expressed the new commitment via his official X handle, @Lord_Collins, on Wednesday.
Noting that by 2050, more than one in four of the world’s population will be African, Collins stated that the continent has some of the world’s fastest-growing economies and is a hub for innovation.
“Africa is a continent of unparallel diversity and an incredible hub of creativity and innovation. As Minister for Africa, I’m committed to listening to our African partners and building long term partnerships rooted in respect.
“We will move beyond the outdated models of patronage. We will reconnect with African countries, putting trade and growth at the heart of our partnerships.
“By 2050, more than one in four of the world’s population will be African. It’s by working together that we can make real progress towards our shared goals growing our economies, tackling the climate crisis and boosting prosperity and strengthening our collective stability,” he said.
