A truck driver was killed when a tree fell on him around 11:40 p.m. Thursday along the Murtala Mohammed Highway in Calabar, Cross River State.
The truck’s conductor described the incident, saying that the articulated vehicle had been loaded and the driver was waiting his turn for clearance when he fell asleep.
The eyewitness stated that he heard the thud of the fallen tree but that the driver died before he could wake him.

He urged the government to help protect truck drivers’ and others’ lives by removing old trees across the state.
According to Ministry of Environment officials, the state government is working to remove all old trees across the state in order to avoid a repeat of another heinous incident.
