According to a report the president is pressuring senators to approve the 2024 budget quickly even though it is missing key information that would allow for a thorough analysis.
An unidentified senator voiced concerns in the report, questioning the logic of approving a national budget without access to vital information.
Informed debates and senators’ capacity to evaluate the budget’s impact on different sectors and senatorial districts are hampered, he claimed, by the lack of budget details.
His statements:
It is anticipated that the National Assembly will approve the budget by December 31st. However, the senators haven’t had a copy of the budget for review up until now. Even without information, they are under pressure to approve the budget.
“We’re not sure if the budget has been inflated with too many expenses. If senators had access to a copy of the budget, they could research every area and participate in the discussion with knowledge.
“It will even provide us with the chance to understand its impact on various senatorial districts.”

The report also stated that, as of the time of publication, senators had not received a copy of the budget.
Last Wednesday, during a joint session of the National Assembly, President Bola Tinubu delivered the “Budget of Renewed Hope.”
Even after the budget was given a second reading and referred to the Committee on Appropriations, important aspects are still unknown.
