Bola Tinubu, the incoming president of Nigeria, has been tasked by US Secretary of State Antony J. Blinken with maintaining and enhancing US-Nigeria relations.
In a statement, US Department of State spokesperson Matthew Miller said that Blinken, who spoke with Tinubu on Tuesday morning, emphasized his continued commitment to furthering the relationship between the United States and Nigeria under the new administration.
Blinken stated that the partnership between the United States and Nigeria is based on common interests and solid inter-personal ties, and that these ties should only get stronger under President-elect Tinubu’s leadership.
The two also talked about the necessity of inclusive leadership that speaks for all Nigerians, ongoing comprehensive security cooperation, and reforms to foster economic growth.
On May 29, 2023, Tinubu will be sworn in as the country of Nigeria’s new president, succeeding Muhammadu Buhari.
