Despite growing international worries over reported Christian killings in Nigeria, President Bola Tinubu said on Friday that Nigeria would not be frightened by outside pressure.
Days after US President Donald Trump warned potential military action over what he called “Christian genocide” in Nigeria, Tinubu announced his stance in a message posted on his verified 𝕏 account.
According to reports, Tinubu declared that Nigeria would not be intimidated or driven into fear and that the nation would continue to interact with the world community with confidence.
On Wednesday, President Trump asserted that Christians in Nigeria were under existential threat and threatened to step in if the Nigerian government did not take action.
He insisted that Washington would “completely wipe out” Islamic terrorists responsible for the claimed killings and said he had instructed the US Department of War to prepare alternatives for airstrikes or forces on the ground.
Nigeria was previously categorized by Trump as a Country of Particular Concern (CPC) due to claims of widespread persecution.
Check out the statement’s complete content below:
“We confront obstacles head-on and are unwavering in our will to interact with allies and advance Nigeria’s interests diplomatically. With steadfast composure, clarity, and a clear sense of purpose, we are boldly establishing our position on the international scene.
“We will not back down in the face of terrorism, a problem Nigeria has fought for nearly 20 years. We shall triumph over terrorism and declare victory in this conflict. We shall never compromise on the non-negotiable principle of security. We will win if we have unflinching bravery and a strong dedication to the rule of law.
“Nigeria is one cohesive family.” Together, we rise, advance, and choose resolve over hopelessness. Our worries are little compared to the strength and resilience of our future.
“We have an enormous task ahead of us, but we are even more determined. In order to create a thriving and inclusive Nigeria, we will keep building on the progress we have made in reform.
“We are determined to eradicate criminals from our society, and we will do all in our power to do so. As we step up our efforts to combat terrorism, we implore our partners to stand with us. We’ve come a long way in the last two years, and we’re going to completely eradicate this menace.
“We will prevail with bravery and the rule of law.”
“Nigeria will continue to be a steadfast advocate for stability and a trustworthy ally and partner to its friends. As we bolster economic growth and security, we also welcome the cooperation and support of our friends, partners, and allies.
“We extend our sincere gratitude to the courageous men and women of our armed forces and intelligence community who serve boldly, battle alongside one another, and occasionally pay the ultimate price, regardless of tribe or religion. Our strength in the battle against terrorism is your dedication.
