A National Pay Policy (NPP) has been formulated by the Federal Government of Nigeria in order to put an end to arbitrary treatment of employees in the workplace and to guarantee that Nigerian workers are paid fairly.

This information was made public on Wednesday in Abuja by Ekpo Nta, who serves as Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of the National Salaries, Incomes, and Wages Commission (NSIWC).

In an interview with the Daily Sun, Nta stated that the policy will determine a worker’s salary based on the number of hours they spend working in the office in addition to the quality of the work they produce.

He explained: “What it entails is that whenever people are working in any country, including in your own private organization, you have a policy guiding them. This is what it means for it to be international.” For instance, if you were to receive a new appointment in the government, you would be aware that your employment there would last for either 35 years or until you reached the age of 60, whichever came first.

“Consequently, that is the kind of policy that you are going to have to implement. To be eligible for that wage, you are required to be present at your place of employment from a specified time in the morning until a specified time in the day or night, depending on whether or not you work shifts. People who work in the information industry don’t even have opening and closing times to worry about. Your compensation will be based, ultimately, on the sum total of all of these factors. Will it be a set amount each month or will it fluctuate? Will you be eligible for any additional allowances?

“Are you going to get fringe benefits, because fringe benefits don’t always come in the form of cash?” “Are you going to get fringe benefits?” Do we give you a voucher to use at the hospital, or do we provide you with transportation home on one of our staff buses? These are elements that will go into defining the pay policy for your company. How many times during the year do I need to make a payment to you? Should it be on a monthly basis? Should it take place on a weekly basis? And how many times would you like an increase to be given to you? You are aware that there is a salary increase waiting for some people after the first year.

“At what intervals should we conduct a review of your compensation? Should this have an effect on how much you get paid? Should you continue working at your current job if inflation is so high? If the answer is no, what percentages or indices should we use instead? These elements are going to come together to form a pay policy.

Aside from that, as an employer, you should be able to know your income and determine how many workers to employ before you go about recruiting new employees. When choosing an insurance plan, it is also important to consider your financial situation. If you want to hire a driver for your home, the first thing you need to do is calculate how much money you bring in each month so that you know how much you can afford to pay a driver.

“Therefore, you are free to assert that you are able to hire a driver; however, you will not be able to pay N30,000 per month. That will now serve as a standard in your family. If you want to have two drivers, you can expect two different outcomes. Either you increase your budget of income to be able to pay for two drivers, or you negotiate with the driver to come between the hours of 8:00 am and 12:00 pm. Your only other option is to hire a third driver. These are the things that you refer to as your own local policies when you’re at home.”
