Following the killing of a military personnel from the same community in Rivers State’s Emohua Local Government Area, there is palpable tension in Obelle.
The officer, who had returned home for the holidays, was fatally shot in front of his home, where some boys had set up a checkpoint to prevent illegal oil bunkering.

When some soldiers learned that one of their colleagues had been killed, they invaded the community, arrested some people, and set fire to the local vigilante group’s camp.
The soldiers, who arrived in different trucks, also demolished checkpoints set up along the Ibaa-Obelle Elele town road by some police officers and residents of the named communities.
Meanwhile, some residents of the community have fled the area because they are afraid.
The Nigerian Army’s 6th Division in Port Harcourt has yet to issue an official statement regarding the latest killing.

The latest incident occurs two weeks after gunmen suspected of being members of a cult terrorizing the area assassinated the local vigilante group’s second in command.
