Some students at the Federal University of Technology in Minna, Niger State, have protested the school administration’s proposed outrageous increase in school fees.

Many of the students expressed concern that if the increase is implemented, they will be forced to drop out.

According to one of the students, the nationwide COVID-19 lockdown in 2020 impacted students to the point where many were unable to pay the current fees of N28,450.

He went on to say that the fees had now been raised to N40,000, putting many students’ hopes of continuing their studies in jeopardy.

“Right now, there is a serious issue between the school administration and the students,” he said. The school administration increased the school fees by about 60%. After the pandemic last year, some students were unable to return to school because school fees were only N28,450. What will happen to students who pay N45,000 in school fees?

“Students are upset; some may drop out as a result of this. Given the negative effects of COVID-19, which ravaged the country last year, resulting in job losses and a high inflation rate, this should not be happening.”
