According to the UN, 440 civilians were killed in fighting between government forces and militias in South Sudan’s Tambura district last year.
Civilians were gang-raped, jailed, and minors were recruited into militias, according to a report.

According to the report, at least 64 civilians were subjected to sexual abuse, including a 13-year-old girl who was gang-raped to death by the UN’s peacekeeping force in South Sudan, Unmiss, and the UN Human Rights Office.
“I observed the occurrence with my own eyes, and it was a dreadful scene,” a teacher was cited as saying in the paper.
Between June and September 2021, unrest erupted in Tambura, Western Equatoria State.
According to the report, 80,000 individuals were forced to abandon their houses to avoid the conflict.
It accused “military personnel, fighters from the Sudan People’s Liberation Movement/Army in Opposition, SPLM/A-IO, and militias linked with them” of violating human rights.

They included high-ranking military officers as well as community and religious leaders, according to the study.
Michelle Bachelet, the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, has demanded that those responsible be held accountable.
