Since I became NLC President, I have stepped on people’s toes – Ajaero

Joe Ajaero, who is the president of the Nigeria Labour Congress, has stated that ever since he took office, he has done everything in his power to fight for the rights of Nigerian workers. He has stepped on toes.

According to Ajaero, he never feels ashamed because it serves as a measurement of how well he is performing his duties as President of the labour union.

The statement was made during his visit to the corporate headquarters of the Senior Staff Union in Colleges of Education, Nigeria (SSUCOEN) in Abuja. SSUCOEN is located in Nigeria.

It is important to keep in mind that ever since Ajaero emerged as President of the NLC in a consensus arrangement, he has been at odds with governors from the East, particularly Hope Uzodinma, who is the governor of Imo State.

He had claimed that Uzodinma attempted to clone the state executive of the NLC in order to increase his political profile. This was one of the allegations that he had made.

Recent events led to Ajaero issuing an order to halt all flights between Lagos and Owerri. This order came about as a result of a misunderstanding.

During the course of his conversation with the officials of SUCCOEN, he voiced his disapproval of the members of the National Assembly, including the officials of the National Salaries, Income and Wages Commission. He claimed that these individuals pay themselves phoney salaries and gratuities despite lacking the necessary credentials.

Ajaero told me, “In this matter, I agree with you. I will not be here to bemoan the situation. We do not feel any shame in taking up our members’ causes and fighting for them. Since we’ve joined the team, we’ve stepped on some toes, and now those other people are fighting back. That is how we gauge whether or not we are succeeding in what we are doing.

“When you see how much they are paying themselves as a gratuity now that they are leaving office, look at the budget. It will make you cry.” Find out from members of the parliament, as some of them are earning the salary of NCE holders despite not having NCE. And with regard to the Salaries and Wages Commission, I am not aware of how they conduct their business.

“That is the most prejudiced organisation in the world. ” If you check on them now, you will find that some of them are already in court due to the fact that they do not have either a NYSC discharge certificate or a school certificate, despite the fact that they are making millions and billions of dollars. This means that there are now two different policies in place for the same population in the same country. It should not be allowed. I also believe that each of us needs to demonstrate at least a passing interest in politics.

In the meantime, the President of SSUCOEN, Danladi Msheliza, has tasked President Muhammadu Buhari with the necessity of quickly assenting to the bill seeking Amendment of the Act establishing colleges of education in the nation before vacating office. This task was given to President Buhari by SSUCOEN President Msheliza.

The Act that we are using currently is not only antiquated but was promulgated by a decree of 1986 and as a result, it cannot be an act that should be operational in colleges of education in this country. According to the President of SSUCOEN, the new Act, if approved, would change the face of colleges of education across the country. There have been some changes made to the Polytechnics and Universities Act.

He stated that the union took the initiative and sponsored a bill in 2018, but since the President was unable to give his assent to the bill before the term of the eighth Assembly ended, the union decided to sponsor the bill once more.
