In accordance with Article 86 of the Constitution of 1999, the Senate has made a request for the prompt appointment of an Auditor General for the Federation.
The Red Chamber informed President Bola Tinubu of this information through a communication that was signed by the Chairman of the Senate Committee on Public Accounts, Senator Aliyu Wadada.
The office of the Auditor-General for the Federation, which is the highest-ranking auditing organisation in the nation, has been operating without a substantive auditor-general for the past ten months, which has caused the upper house to voice alarm about this situation.
The following is an excerpt from the letter: “The absence of a substantive AuGF will undermine strict adherence to Accounting Standards and the Annual Reports of the Auditor-General on the accounts of the Federation of Nigeria Agencies and Ministries, Agencies, Departments (MDAs) cannot be successfully sent.”
“This will impede necessary checks and balances, which are integral to the activities of the committees responsible for Public Accounts within the National Assemblies,”
In light of this, the statement continued, “In the interest of the nation, it is extremely important for President Tinubu to accept our recommendations.”
“The absence of the auditor-general could have a negative impact on the efforts that our government is doing to combat corruption and to improve openness and accountability in governance.”
In the letter, Wadada argued that appointing a substantive auditor-general will both improve the commitment of the federal government to its fiscal responsibilities and maintain public trust.
Due to the fact that an auditor general had not been appointed, it was mentioned that the audit reports for the years 2020, 2021, and 2022 had not yet been delivered in accordance with Section 85 (2) of the Constitution of 1999.
