The Nigerian Senate on Tuesday rejected two legislation that sought to empower women and give them particular recognition.
One of the bills proposes creating a single special seat for a woman in the Senate, House of Representatives, and Federal Capital Territory, without regard to eligibility to run for office.

Senators who voted on the bill said it should not be passed.
“The bill seeks to create a special seat for women in the Senate, House of Representatives, State Houses of Assembly, and the Federal Capital Territory reserved solely for women, without prejudice to their eligibility to contest existing Senatorial seats in each State and FCT,” according to the bill.
Senators also voted against the planned 35 percent affirmative action for women in political party administration.
