In a preemptive move aimed at maintaining public order, security operatives in Osun State on Wednesday, embarked on a show of force.
The deployment of armed personnel from the police, army, and other security agencies has raised eyebrows and sparked concerns about the potential for civil unrest.
The motorcade which consisted of Soldiers, Police, Civil Defence Corps and DSS operatives move around major streets in Osogbo heavily armed.
Speaking on the roadshow, Osun Police command spokesperson, SP Yemisi Opalola said the combined security operatives were on a show of strength in preparation for the August one rally to deter criminal elements from hijacking the protest.
“Yes, the team is on a show of strength across the state capital to serve as a warning for unscrupulous elements who may want to infiltrate tomorrow’s protest to hijack it.

“We are sending a signal that there is no room for criminals to hijack the protest. The protest would have protection and other citizens would be adequately protected as well”, she said.
While the official stance is that the operation is a deterrent against criminal elements who might exploit any planned protests, the heavy-handed approach has not been without criticism. Civil liberty advocates have raised alarms about the potential for human rights abuses and the chilling effect such displays can have on freedom of expression.
The heightened security posture comes amid growing tensions in the country, with calls for protests over various socio-economic issues. The government’s decision to deploy security forces in such a visible manner suggests a deep-seated apprehension about the potential for large-scale demonstrations.
