The Department of State Services has revealed that some individuals have plans to interfere with some of the nation’s handover ceremonies.

The service claims that these individuals intend to disrupt the work of the security authorities and to terrorise the populace.

The DSS asked residents to follow the established rules for the activities across the country in a statement issued on Thursday by the service’s spokesperson, Peter Afunanya.

It would be recalled that on May 18, 2023, the Secretary to the Government of the Federation and Chairman of the Presidential Transition Council conducted a worldwide press conference during which he outlined plans for the inauguration of the President. The President’s oath-taking ceremony, which will take place on May 29, 2023, in Abuja, will be the main event. The majority of States will also swear in new governors on the same day.

The Service is however aware of subversive elements’ efforts to sabotage the programmes in several areas of the nation. In addition to undermining security authorities’ efforts to ensure calm ceremonies, the goal is to instill dread and terror among the general people.

These serve as a basis for advising citizens, the media, and Civil Society Organisations to rigorously follow civil and security norms throughout the activities.

He cautioned Nigerians to avoid bogus news that can incite violence and asked unauthorised individuals to avoid the inaugural places.

They are also asked to avoid sensationalism, false alarms, biassed reporting and narratives, and fake news because these things are more likely to spark conflict and bloodshed both before and after the exercises. This is doubly so because such unwelcome actions will only help to undermine national cohesiveness and unity.

“All unauthorised (and unaccredited) individuals are additionally cautioned to avoid restricted and specific designated areas at the event sites.
The Service reiterates its earlier request that people follow the law and be calm. To ensure successful inaugurations, it will maintain its engagement with sister organisations in the meantime.
