In an effort to reduce public nuisance, Lagos State Environmental Task Force authorities arrested 17 individuals on Monday for allegedly engaging in street begging in various areas of the city. Eight children were among those taken into custody.
In a statement on X, Commissioner for Environment and Water Resources Tokunbo Wahab stated: “On Monday, December 16, 2024, the Lagos State Environmental Taskforce monitored and conducted a special purpose operation against individuals who constitute public nuisance around the city.

“During the operation, 17 people—including 8 minors—who were engaged in the illegal activity of street begging during the hold-ups were apprehended.”

Major thoroughfares such as Alfred Rewane, Osborne, Alexandra, Burdillon in Ikoyi, and the Lekki-Ajah express corridor in Victoria Island were patrolled by the officials, according to the commissioner, “where destitute and miscreants were arrested and warded off.”

According to enabling laws, Mr. Wahab stated that those who were detained would be moved to the proper government facilities.
