Derby County and the EFL are close to reaching an agreement on a points deduction for breaking financial fair play rules.
If a final agreement is reached, the penalty will be reduced from what would have been imposed otherwise, but a reported nine-point deduction would immediately drop them to the bottom of the second tier with minus-two points.
Rule 85 of the EFL regulations allows a club to accept a lesser punishment in exchange for avoiding the time and expense of having the case heard by a formal disciplinary commission in the future. According to reports from Wednesday night, a three-point suspension will be lifted pending future compliance.
Derby accepted a suspended three-point deduction for failing to pay their players last December under that rule in July.

The Rams are already operating under a transfer embargo, which restricted their search for new players this summer to free transfers and six-month loans.
Derby were charged with breaking spending rules in January 2020 and were later cleared, but the EFL’s appeal over their accounting policies resulted in a £100,000 fine in June.
Derby are currently 16th in the Championship with seven points after seven games, with one win and four draws, after avoiding relegation to League One on the final day of last season.
