The contentious issues surrounding President Bola Tinubu’s declaration of a State of Emergency in Rivers State have prompted the Nigerian Senate to convene behind closed doors.
On Thursday, March 20, Senate Majority Leader Opeyemi Bamidele made a motion for the lawmakers to enter a closed session while speaking on the Red Chamber floor.
As a precursor to the motion I have in the Order Paper, Bamidele stated, “Mr. President and distinguished colleagues, let me say that I move, pursuant to order 135 of our rules, that the Senate now go into a closed session.” Thank you, sir.
Following his hearing of Bamidele’s motion, Senate President Godswill Akpabio invited the minority leader to make his views.
In response, the Minority Leader declared his support for the resolution calling for a closed session of the Senate to consider the Order Paper.
Akpabio went on to urge a voice vote in favor of the Senate’s resolution to enter a closed session. Members of the Senate agreed with this.
