Reps denounce kidnapping of military personnel in Zamfara

The House of Representatives has expressed its disapproval of the kidnapping that occurred in Gasau, Zamfara State, of eight National Youth Corps members who were on their way to Sokoto State to perform their national service.

The condemnation was voiced on Tuesday in Uyo, the capital of Akwa Ibom State, by the chairman of the House Committee on Youth Development, Hon. Martins Esin. He was responding to questions from reporters.

Esin, a member of the National Assembly who represents the Oron/Mbo/Okobo/Udung Uko/Urueoffong Oruko Federal Constituency, described the incident as unfortunate and stated that it was wrong to subject young people who obey the call for national service to such a traumatic experience. He also assured the audience that the government is working diligently towards the goal of ensuring that the detained individuals are freed.

He disclosed that the House of Representatives, which is led by the Speaker, Rt. Hon. Tajudeen Abbas, is dedicated to passing laws that will guarantee the health, safety, and welfare of all Nigerians, including members of the corps.

The representative referred to the National Youth Service Corps as a national institution that effectively serves as a learning platform for the nation’s youth and said that it is imperative that every effort be made to safeguard and maintain the programme.

He voiced optimism that the Scheme will survive the current challenges facing the nation while simultaneously urging Nigerians to protect corp members in their respective domains. He referred to the reopening of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) camp in Borno State after a period of twelve years during which it had been closed as a positive sign and evidence of the scheme’s value.

Esin also praised the leadership of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) for their quick response after learning of the kidnapping incident. He assured the NYSC leadership that they would have the support of the House of Representatives in their efforts to make the Scheme better and stronger. Esin added that the House Committee that he chairs would pay special attention to the welfare of corps members, describing them as the nation’s best hope.

He gave his word that his committee would collaborate with the minister to make the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) better and to safeguard the interests of Nigeria’s young people.
