“Reckless politicians” allegedly broke into the IReV election result viewing portal during the general election of 2023, according to Prof. Attahiru Jega, a former head of the Independent National Electoral Commission.
During her appearance on Channels Television’s Inside Sources Program on Friday, Jega made her request for an investigation known.
Public criticism resulted from the commission’s inability to submit the election results to the IReV portal promptly during the February 25, 2023, presidential election.
Jega responded to the news by stating that certain desperate lawmakers had compromised the gateway to thwart the commission’s attempts to get it correctly.
Jega stated, “INEC performed admirably in 2023 despite extremely challenging conditions, many of which were brought on by our self-centered politicians who desired to win by any means necessary.
“INEC has over time implemented technology to make the election results process very transparent and integrity-driven, but based on my personal experience serving in INEC from 2011 to 2015, I suspect that a lot of that has persisted up until 2023 as our imprudent politicians attempt to outpace INEC.”
“If you try anything new today, they’ll try to outsmart you and beat you by the next election.
“If you ask for my opinion, I feel very strongly that INEC needs to tell us more about what happened with the IReV.
“In fact, at one point, I was even calling for a thorough public inquiry about what happened with regards to IReV.
“Of course, in order to maintain the process’s integrity, they can also employ strategies and tactics to not only obstruct but also circumvent anything that has been really added.
“I think that something happened; the IReV failed notwithstanding the assurance and polished speech delivered by Mahmood Yakubu, the chairman of INEC.
“I think it was truncated by some of our careless politicians, but INEC will bear the responsibility for that.”
After all court proceedings are concluded, he further requested INEC to investigate what really happened to the IReV platform.
