President Muhammadu Buhari has urged businessmen, contractors, and other privileged Nigerians who benefit from government patronage to always prioritize Corporate Social Responsibility over individual favors.
According to a statement issued by the President’s Senior Special Assistant on Media and Publicity, Garba Shehu, the President made the remarks on Friday in Daura, Katsina State, while paying a visit to the Emir of Daura, Dr Umar Faruk Umar, at his Palace.
“I am not interested in your check,” he stated. Instead of attempting to recoup kickbacks from public officials, including his office, “go and assist our communities.”
“We are not interested in receiving checks from individuals or organizations as a means of recompense or exerting influence in any way. Allow them to bear in mind their Corporate Social Responsibilities,” he continued.
President Buhari continued by stating that he would visit Daura more frequently if not for the high cost of presidential movements and the exposure of security personnel to the elements, assuring the public that his heart remains with the people.
“We are known for agriculture, and I own a farm here. I could visit every two weeks and no one would be able to stop me. However, the movement comes at a high cost. I’d prefer that money be used to improve our schools, clinics, and hospitals.”
The President stated that it was by God’s grace that Nigeria remained united as a country despite divisions that resulted in a 30-month civil war in the 1960’s.

“We want to express our gratitude to God for keeping us together as a country. The country was thrown into political crisis on January 15, 1966. We had a 30-month civil war that claimed approximately a million lives.
“We continue to give thanks to God for keeping us together. We remain indebted to everyone who expressed an interest in our unity and progress. May God bless them in the future,” he added.
The President, recalling fond memories of his visits to the Palace as a military Head of State, expressed joy that the traditional institution’s warmth and hospitality had been preserved over the years.
The Emir of Daura expressed gratitude to the President for always making time to visit his hometown and the palace despite the President’s hectic schedule.
“Your visit to Daura demonstrates your admirable character, of which we are extremely proud. I can assure you that men, women, children, merchants, and artisans will always welcome you and will pray for you.
“Today is not a day for speeches, but for expressions of gratitude. We have been so fortunate as a community because you are the country’s leader. You have enhanced the prestige of our domain.
“As a community, we have reaped significant benefits from the increased traffic of individuals and organizations wishing to assist us here. We are aware that it is as a result of you.
“May the good Lord always go ahead of you and behind you, clearing your path of all impediments,” he added.
The Emir stated that the President must maintain a laser-like focus on achieving results, particularly in terms of national security.

“Nigeria is fortunate to have you at this point in time. I am not saying this to appease you, but it would have been extremely difficult if you had not been in power. I have my doubts that we will be present today,” he added.
During the meeting, the Emir publicly announced the award of the Talban Daura title to Yusuf Buhari, President Buhari’s son.
He stated that a date would be announced for the President’s son’s turbanning ceremony, which would most likely occur prior to his marriage.
Additionally, the Emir announced the establishment of a District in the President’s community, with headquarters in Dumurkol.
He stated that the turbaning of the young Buhari and the establishment of the District are intended to further strengthen and extend the Palace’s longstanding relationship with the family.
According to him, the decision was made in consultation with the Daura Emirate Council’s kingmakers.
