The Edo State Independent Electoral Commission (EDSIEC) revealed the results of the local government council election held on Saturday yesterday.
According to the Commission, the ruling Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) won all 18 Local Government Areas in the state.
Seven political parties initially registered to run in the elections. However, four parties, including the Action Alliance (AA), Allied Peoples Movement (APM), Accord (A), and African Democratic Congress (ADC), later collapsed their structures for the PDP.
The parties announced their withdrawal from the polls at a news conference Friday morning, citing the necessity to assist Governor Obaseki in order for him to deliver democratic dividends to the people as the basis for their actions.
Hon. Osaro Uwaifo of the Action Alliance (AA), Hon. Omorogbe Joseph of the Accord (A), Hon. Charles Ogieriakhi of the Allied Peopie’s Movement (APM), and Hon. Frank Osifo of the Africa Democratic Congress (ADC) signed the communique.
The three parties that eventually competed in the Council elections were the ruling PDP, the All Progressives Congress (APC), and the Labour Party (LP).
However, the APC and the LP both objected to how the elections were conducted.
The APC’s state chairman, David Imuse, who talked over the phone from Ekpoma, condemned the polls as a sham.

“This election is a sham, a charade.” They brought an insufficient number of ballot papers but no single result sheet. How can an election be held when there is no result sheet?
“It’s happening throughout the entire Edo central senatorial district.” “I’m calling from Ekpoma, the same thing is happening in Esan North East, Esan West, everywhere here, no result sheets, and I don’t see how an election can take place without result sheets,” Imuse added.
The Labour Party, for its part, organised a large protest against the polls, with three candidates for Benin local councils, namely Egor, Ikpoba-Okha, and Oredo, announcing their withdrawal from the elections.
The demonstrators who invaded the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) state secretariat included members of the party from Oredo and Ikpoba Okha Local Government Areas.
They called for the cancellation of the elections, which they described as a scam, even as they announced their decision to withdraw from the election, citing irregularities and claiming that the Edo State Independent Electoral Commission (EDSIEC) failed to deliver on its promise to conduct free, fair, and credible elections.
At press time, EDSIEC spokesman Albert Eguaoje stated that the Commission will issue certificates of return to the successful candidates this afternoon.
