During his confrontation with Governor Godwin Obaseki, the deputy governor of Edo State, Philip Shaibu, apologised for remarks he made against the state’s former governor, Adams Oshiomhole.
Notwithstanding their political disagreements, Shaibu said in a January 1 TVC programme that Oshiomhole remained his father.
There have been rumours that Obaseki and Oshomhole had a falling out in 2020 over Obaseki’s bid for a second term.
Shaibu supported Obaseki during the match by stating that Oshomhole was not fit to be playing a godfather.
Obaseki became so enraged that he decided to run for reelection with the Peoples Democratic Party instead of the All Progressives Congress.
There have been rumours that Shaibu and Obaseki are not getting along, which is related to Shaibu’s desire to succeed Obaseki as governor of Edo.
Shaibu is now their shared adversary, but Oshiomhole and Obaseki appear to have resolved their differences as they have recently been spotted together at state functions.
Shaibu stated during the TVC programme that our correspondent was watching that his desire to succeed his principal, Obaseki, was motivated by a divine conviction to serve the state and return power to the people.
“I express regret over my past remarks against Comrade Adams Oshiomhole and I maintain that, in spite of our political differences, the former governor—who is currently a senator in the National Assembly—remains my father,” he said.
Speaking about his ambition, he stated, “I want to be the next governor of Edo State because it is my constitutional right, not because I am Philip Shaibu. I had conferred extensively with a wide range of people and organisations both inside and outside of Edo State prior to formally announcing my intention to run.
“In addition, I prayed to God for wisdom and guidance. Despite the Governor’s clear intentions to support someone else, the signs I received inspired me to pursue my ambition.
