Anambra judiciary workers begin indefinite strike

The Judiciary Staff Union of Nigeria, Anambra State Chapter on Monday commenced an indefinite strike over the refusal by the state government to pay the Consolidated Judiciary Salary Structure.

The News Agency of Nigeria correspondent, who visited the High Courts at Ekwueme Square, Chief Magistrate’s Courts and Customary Courts in Amawbia, Awka, reports that there were no court proceedings.

There were no magistrates, judges or staff seen around the court premises except for security personnel on duty.

Lawyers and litigants who came around were turned back as the entrance gates were locked.

Speaking JUSUN State Chairman, Mr Henry Ezeoke, said the indefinite strike was to protest non-adherence to an agreement reached between the group and the state government in 2011 and 2015.

“The action was as a result of the state government’s refusal to pay CONJUS as agreed upon in 2011 and 2015 respectively.

“We have explored all possible avenues but the state government has refused to comply with the agreement on implementation of CONJUS.

“The union earlier issued a 21-day ultimatum to the state government but it was ignored. We believe that downing tools is the only language the government will understand.

“Therefore, the strike will last indefinitely, until government meets the conditions and pending further directives by the union,” Ezeoke said.

Argentina’s Copa America victory celebrations marred by violence

Thousands of people celebrated in Buenos Aires on Monday morning after Lionel Messi’s Argentina team was crowned champion of the Copa America with a 1-0 victory over Colombia in an electrifying final that was decided in extra time.

Cheering fans, many wrapped in Argentine flags, partied around the city’s iconic Obelisk in the early hours of the morning despite the low temperatures of the southern hemisphere winter.

The party ended abruptly after more than four hours when police deployed water trucks and officers to clear the streets, causing a rush of people.

Some hurled stones at the police but many quickly dispersed in the face of advancing riot police.

The authorities reported no arrests or injuries.

“We are champions of America, let’s enjoy this precious moment that is unique for us since we have the chance to celebrate with the greatest who is …Messi and the farewell of ‘Fideo’ (Angel) Di Maria,” a chanting Pablo Inigo told AFP.

President Javier Milei congratulated the two-time America’s champions posting “Let’s go Argentina carajo..!!!!! We are champions again…!!!!” on social platform X.

The win was the Argentine’s third straight major tournament title following their 2021 Copa victory and triumph in the 2022 World Cup in Qatar.

Several hundred people had gathered at the site to follow the game but it was not broadcast on the screens, and they had to settle for watching it on their phones.

Others crowded the surrounding bars and cafes huddling around TV sets.

Celebrations were also marred by the death of a fan who, before the match, started climbed a structure in front of the Obelisk to wave a flag but lost his balance and fell six meters.

Firefighters removed the body of the 29-year-old victim.

President Bola Tinubu has withdrawn the appointment of former Ondo state commissioner, Dr Femi Adekambi and reinstated Professor Nenibarini Zabbey as the project coordinator of the Hydrocarbon Pollution Remediation Project, HYPREP.
This comes in less than two days after Adekambi was appointed as HYPREP project coordinator.
Ajuri Ngelale, the Special Adviser to the president on Media and Publicity made the announcement in a Facebook post on Monday afternoon.
The statement reads, “President Bola Tinubu has approved the reinstatement of Professor Nenibarini Zabbey as the Project Coordinator of the Hydrocarbon Pollution Remediation Project (HYPREP).
“The President reached the decision following a performance review of the HYPREP Project Coordinator and concluded that the Project Coordinator is fit to discharge his functions in accordance with the regulations guiding the execution of the Hydrocarbon Pollution Remediation Project (HYPREP).
“By the directive of the President, the reinstatement of the HYPREP Project Coordinator takes immediate effect

Goldman Sachs profits jump to $2.9bn

Goldman Sachs reported strong second-quarter results Monday demonstrating robustness across its trading, advisory and asset management businesses.

The storied New York financial giant, which was under pressure for much of 2023 over an ill-fated push into Main Street lending, reported profits of $2.9bn for the quarter ending June 30, more than double the year-ago level.

Revenues rose 14 per cent to $8.2bn.

With the consumer banking experiment in the rear-view mirror, Goldman excelled in its bread-and-butter enterprises in the just-finished quarter.

In global banking, the New York giant scored increased fees for debt underwriting and equity underwriting, while reporting higher revenues in both fixed income and equities trading.

The investment bank’s asset and wealth management division also prospered behind a buoyant performance in equity holdings and a much better time in real estate investments, which suffered significant losses in the year ago period.

Operating expenses were essentially flat compared with the year-ago level, while results were also assisted by a decrease in provisions for bad loans.

Chief Executive David Solomon described the results as “solid,” saying in a statement that the firm is deepening its relationship with clients and “serving them in an improving, but complex environment.”

Shares of Goldman Sachs rose 1.0 percent in pre-market trading.

Google in advanced negotiations to acquire cyber startup Wiz for $23bn – Report

Search engine giant Google, is reportedly in advanced talks to acquire cyber start-up, Wiz, for $23 billion.
The deal if completed would be the company’s largest acquisition.
The Wall Street Journal reported Sunday, citing people familiar with the matter.
The newspaper addes that a deal could come soon and would also underline a clear and continued bet on cybersecurity.
Wiz provides an all-in-one solution for cloud security by absorbing information from Google Cloud, Microsoft Azure, Amazon Web Services, and other cloud platforms and then analyzing it all to find security risks.

The transaction is presumably seen by Alphabet management as a means of bolstering Google’s cloud business, which had a 28% growth to $9.57 billion in the first quarter of this year.

Yinon Costica, Roy Reznik, Assaf Rappaport, and Ami Luttwak, all former Microsoft employees, founded Wiz four years ago.
The company has raised $1.9 billion till date.
The business has $350 million in recurring income annually at the time of its most recent investment round.

Tinubu reverses Adekanmbi’s appointment as HYREP Coordinator, reinstates Zabbey

President Bola Tinubu has reinstated Professor Nenibarini Zabbey as the Project Coordinator of the Hydrocarbon Pollution Remediation Project.

The President’s Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Ajuri Ngelale, announced Zabbey’s reinstatement in a statement on Monday titled ‘President Tinubu reinstates professor Nenibarini Zabbey, as HYREP coordinator.’

Monday’s development comes two days after Tinubu approved the appointment of Dr Olufemi Adekanmbi, a former Commissioner for Special Duties, Culture and Tourism in Ondo State, as the new Project Coordinator for the Hydrocarbon Pollution Remediation Project.

Explaining the reason for the reversal, the Presidency said Tinubu “Reached the decision following a performance review of the HYPREP Project Coordinator and concluded that the Project Coordinator is fit to discharge his functions by the regulations guiding the execution of the Hydrocarbon Pollution Remediation Project.”

Zabbey was first appointed HYPREP Coordinator in May 2023 by former President Muhammadu Buhari, succeeding Dr. Giadom Dumbari.

A tweet by the Presidency, @NGRPresident, announced the change in leadership saying, “President @MBuhari has approved the termination of the appointment of the @HYPREPNigeria Project Coordinator, Dr. Ferdinand Giadom, and the appointment of Prof. Nanibarini Zabbey as the new Project Coordinator, with immediate effect.”

According to Ngelale, “By the directive of the President, the reinstatement of the HYPREP Project Coordinator takes immediate effect.”

The Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL) said on Monday it has not increased its earlier investment in the 650,000 barrels per day Dangote Refinery for a commercial reason.
NNPCL Chief Information Officer, Olufemi Soneye disclosed this in a terse statement in Abuja.
He was reacting to a statement credited to the Chairman of Dangote Refinery, Aliko Dangote that NNPC’s stake was now 7.2 percent contrary 20 percent mentioned earlier.
According to Soneye, NNPCL had several months ago decided to cap its investment at the amount already paid.

Soneye said that the decision not to invest any further in the Dangote refinery did not impact NNPC’s business.
He said: “Several months ago, we made a commercial decision to cap our investment at the amount already paid.

However, the position is contrary to the widely announced claim by the Group Chief Executive Officer of NNPCL, Mele Kyari, that the company had bought 20 percent in Dangote Refinery.

Amaewhule-led Rivers assembly blocks Fubara from spending

The Rivers State House of Assembly, led by Martin Amaewhule, has shut down all expenditures of Governor Siminalayi Fubara until he presents his budget before the lawmakers.

The assembly made the move during plenary on Monday, following a seven-day ultimatum the lawmakers gave the governor to present his budget before the House.

The Leader of the House, Major Jack, raised the motion informing the House about the expiration of the seven-day ultimatum given to the governor to present the 2024 budget before the House.

After deliberation, the House voted to shut down the Rivers State Consolidated Revenue Account, thus preventing Fubara’s administration from spending any money on behalf of the state.

According Online reported that the Amaewhule-led Assembly had on July 8 given Fubara, a seven-day deadline to resubmit the 2024 budget and also accused him of breaching the provisions of the 1999 Constitution as amended.

In a letter dated July 8, 2024, signed by Amaewhule and sent to Fubara on Monday, the House highlighted the governor’s actions that breached the Constitution.

This order was issued during the first session of the pro-Wike House after a hiatus of several months.

Fubara had previously presented the budget to the faction, with his current Chief of Staff, Edison Ehie, presiding as Speaker.

Ehie and the pro-Fubara lawmakers passed the budget estimates, which the governor then signed into law.

The ongoing political crisis between the governor’s loyalists and his predecessor, Nyesom Wike, is marked by repeated interventions to settle their differences.

NiMet predicts 3-day thunderstorms, rains from Monday

The Nigerian Meteorological Agency, NiMet, has predicted thundery and rainy weather activities from Monday to Wednesday across the country.
NiMet’s weather outlook released on Sunday in Abuja, forecast morning thunderstorms over parts of Taraba, Adamawa, Zamfara, Kebbi, Katsina, Kano and Kaduna States.
According to the outlook, thunderstorms are expected over parts of Taraba, Kaduna, Yobe, Katsina, Kano, Borno, Bauchi and Jigawa states later in the day.
“In the North Central region, rains are expected over parts of the Federal Capital Territory, FCT, Niger and Nasarawa states during the morning hours.
“Later in the day, thunderstorms and rains are anticipated over parts of the Federal Capital Territory, Niger, Kwara, Plateau and Kogi States.
“Morning drizzle and rains are anticipated over parts of Lagos, Abia, Ebonyi, Ondo, Ogun, Rivers, Akwa Ibom and Cross River; while in the afternoon and evening hours, intermittent rains are anticipated over the entire southern region,“ it said.
NiMet envisaged morning thunderstorms over Adamawa, Taraba, Kaduna, Gombe, Katsina, Kano, Bauchi, Yobe, Borno and Jigawa on Tuesday.
It predicted thunderstorms over parts of Adamawa, Taraba, Gombe, Bauchi, Yobe, Borno and Jigawa states later in the day.
“In the North Central region, rains are expected over parts of the Federal Capital Territory, Benue and Kogi States during the morning hours.
“Later in the day, thunderstorms and rains are anticipated over parts of the Federal Capital Territory, Plateau, Nasarawa, Niger, Kogi, Kwara and Benue States.
“Morning rains are anticipated over parts of Ogun, Ondo, Delta, Cross River and Akwa Ibom States; while in the afternoon and evening hours, thunderstorms and intermittent rains are anticipated over the entire Southern region,” it said.
According to NiMet, morning thunderstorms are expected over parts of Sokoto, Kebbi, and Zamfara States on Wednesday.
The agency anticipated thunderstorms over the entire region later in the day.
“In the North Central region, rains are anticipated over Niger and Kwara States during the morning hours.
“Later in the day, thunderstorms and rains are anticipated over Plateau, Nasarawa, FCT, Kogi, Kwara and Benue States.
“Morning rains are anticipated over parts of Cross River and Akwa Ibom States; while in the afternoon/evening hours, intermittent rains are expected over the entire southern region,” it said.
