Ogun probes market fire

0

Ogun State Government has vowed to carry out a thorough investigation to ascertain the cause of the fire which destroyed 15 shops and goods worth millions of naira at Oba Lipede International Market, Kuto, Abeokuta, the state capital, on Saturday.

The state Commissioner for Industry, Trade and Investment, Adebola Sofela, made this known during an on-the-spot assessment visit to the market on Monday.

Sofela said that the essence of the investigation is to know what went wrong and how to prevent a recurrence.

He said, “Experts will be deployed to conduct an integrity test on the building of the market to determine the impact of the fire while the government will also not delay rehabilitation of part of the market affected by the inferno.”

The commissioner, accompanied by the ministry’s Permanent Secretary, Oluola Aikulola, officials of the market’s board, as well as Iyaloja of the Market, Tejumade Bakre, among other market leaders, noted that the main building of the market, which was constructed over 43 years ago will always be protected and maintained given its monumental economic value to the residents of the state

He assured all that the state governor, Dapo Abiodun, would come up with plans to ameliorate the pains of traders whose property was gutted during the inferno.

Decrying the looting of some shops shortly after the incident, Bakre appreciated government and security agents for coming to their rescue.

The fire which started at about 10.15 pm on Saturday, was said to have been caused by the explosion of a generator being powered by gas and owned by a businessman in the market.

The Commissioner for Special Duties, Funmi Efuwape on Sunday told newsmen that 15 shops were affected by the incident.

Efuwape said that the fire started from the illegal structures outside and erupted into the main building saying that the government would consider the demolition of shanties and illegal structures in the market to restore sanity and orderliness.

Passengers accuse policemen of extortion on Anambra roads

0

Some tricycle passengers along the Onitsha-Owerri Road in Anambra State have cried out over the incessant harassment and extortion from security operatives mounting roadblocks on the axis.

One of the victims, who identified himself as Kingsley Ebuka appealed to the state Commissioner of Police, Nnaghe Itam, to caution his men against incessant harassment, humiliation and extortion of passengers on major roads in the state.

He alleged that the level of extortion by policemen who mount roadblocks on the roads in the state, particularly in the commercial city of Onitsha has become so inexplicable that life has become unbearable for the road users in the state.

Briefing journalists at the Human Rights office in Onitsha, on Monday, Ebuka alleged that he boarded a tricycle at Oba in Idemili South Local Government Area of the state on Thursday and was heading to a destination in Onitsha.

He said on getting to a checkpoint opposite the School of Metallurgical Training Institute, on the Onitsha-Owerri Road, some policemen in uniform stopped the tricycle and after extorting N200 from the tricycle operator, ordered some of the passengers to alight from the tricycle.

He said, “On alighting from the tricycle, in obedience to the order, the policemen ordered us to surrender our GSM phones to them for searching.

“On surrendering the handsets to them, the policemen ordered each of the passengers to transfer as much as N350,000 to a certain POS account or be arrested and handed over to either Special Anti Robbery Squad, SARS or Special Anti Cults Squad, SPACS, for prosecution as common criminals.

“Out of fear of being taken away and probably shot dead along the road and tagged criminals or IPOB members, I transferred N150,000 remaining in my bank account into the designated POS account given to us by the policemen before they handed my phone back to me and went after other passengers.”

Ebuka alleged that these policemen wearing black uniforms stationed themselves with a white Hiace bus immediately after another police roadblock in front of Metallurgical Training Institute in Onitsha along the Onitsha/Owerri dual carriageway.

“The policemen had already detained some other passengers inside the white Hiace bus they were operating with and were threatening to move them to SARS or SPACS for allegedly failing to transfer a reasonable amount of money into the designated POS account.

“Their modus operandi is that when they order the passengers out of commercial tricycle or bus, they would force the passengers to open their phones and show them their account balance before they seize the phone and order you to transfer the balance of the amount to the designated POS.

“The N150,000 they forced me to transfer to them on Thursday was what was remaining in my account. I am in distressed and stranded at the moment. I call on the CP to intervene into this situation and helped to fish out this perpetrators giving the police a bad name.

“I have also come to the human rights office to lodge complaints and possible transmission to the appropriate police authorities for prompt action. I can identify the officers involved if called upon any time to do so,” he added.

Another victim, Uche Chidalu, said, “I was in a Keke going home from Upper Iweka, at the same spot, the police officers stopped the Keke, after collecting N200 from the Keke man, ordered the passengers to alight.

“When we alighted, they forced us to open our mobile phones and they went straight to our bank details, but luckily for me, there was no reasonable amount of money in my account, while others were forced to make payment into a designated POS, they detained me and some people inside their vehicle.

“That night, I had to call my brother to transfer some money to me which I used in bailing myself. This is an ugly development and we call on the authorities to investigate this properly and allow sanity to prevail on the roads.”

Commenting on the development, the Chairman of Campaign for Democracy, in the South-East Zone, Dede Uzor, who was also at the human rights office, told journalists that he was once a victim of such extortion, but he used his influence to resist the policemen until crowd started gathering and wanted to attack them before they fled.

Uzor said, “The policemen started mentioning one police formation to the other where they would take me if I did not transfer a certain huge amount of money to their designated POS account but I told them that I was ready to follow them to wherever they want to take me to.

“As we were arguing on that, a crowd gathered and captured one of them, while others fled but I pleaded with the crowd to let the captured one go and they obeyed me and let him go with a minor beating but without inflicting any bodily harm or injury on him.”

Uzor therefore called on the CP to fish out the perpetrators who are tarnishing the image of the police in the state and deal with them ruthlessly, to deter others.

The Director at the Human Rights Office, Onitsha, Chief Gilbert Ikem, said the complaints would be transmitted to the appropriate authorities for investigation while advising residents to devise a means of hiding their bank details on their telephones to beat the new tactics of the extortions.

The state police spokesman, SP Tochukwu Ikenga, when contacted on the development, called on the victims to come forward with their complaints and evidence to enable the police to begin investigation.

NBTE suspends new polytechnic service schemes after backlash

0

The National Board for Technical Education clarified on Monday that the new schemes of service approved by the Federal Government are meant for federal polytechnics and not state-owned polytechnics.

The Executive Secretary of the NBTE, Prof. Idris Bugaje, clarified this at a press conference held at the Board’s headquarters in Kaduna.

Bugaje also announced the suspension of the “contentious” new schemes of service to give room for further input from stakeholders in the nation’s polytechnic sector.

The According reports that the NBTE unveiled new schemes of service on June 19, 2024, as approved by the Federal Government for Nigerian polytechnics, with effect from June 7, 2024.

The NBTE boss had told the gathering that the new schemes of service were a unified approach to the recruitment and promotion of staff across polytechnics in Nigeria.

However, the Academic Staff Union of Polytechnics kicked against it, alleging that the new schemes of service lacked inclusive stakeholder input, particularly from their union and stakeholders in the polytechnic sector.

Against this backdrop, the aggrieved lecturers gave a 15-day ultimatum to the Federal Government, effective July 8, 2024, to suspend the implementation of the new scheme of work or face diverse forms of industrial action by the union.

But the NBTE boss insisted that the schemes of service were for federal government-owned polytechnics and not for state polytechnics, as perceived by the union.

He, however, explained that there would be no negotiation in areas where the new schemes of service recognised “HND holders for the first time as Graduate Assistants like their university counterparts” as well as those that “require “principals and chief lecturers to have doctorate degrees (Ph.D.).”

Bugaje said, “The NBTE has noted the appeal made by the Federal Polytechnics Academic Staff Union (FEPASU) and wishes to say that the Schemes of Service are strictly for the Federal Polytechnics that they represent.

“Federal polytechnics have ownership and governance peculiarities that make them different from state polytechnics.

“And more importantly, education is on the concurrent list in our Constitution, and NBTE cannot therefore impose the new Scheme of Service (after its final validation) on any state polytechnic.

“As such, ASUP should be reduced to where they belong, the state polytechnics and the new scheme is not for them. All our accreditations in state polytechnics shall henceforth be strictly on academic programmes only to ensure standards are maintained.”

As a way of averting the impending industrial action by polytechnic lecturers, Bugaje said the board had officially written the Head of Service on the need to review the scheme before its implementation.

He warned that the government would invoke the “no work, no pay” policy should the lecturers embark on a strike.

“We have written to the Head of Service over grey areas on the new scheme of work, and I’m confident she’s going to respond. We are going to suspend the implementation of the new scheme of service until issues are resolved,” he said.

He urged stakeholders to calm down as the 2024 schemes of service would be reviewed, noting, however, that there “are areas that won’t be compromised.”

“But the argument made by ASUP where people are trying to run away doing their doctorate degrees would not be acceptable,” he added.

Tinubu has already bought $100m presidential jet – Sowore claims

A two-time presidential candidate, Omoyele Sowore, has claimed that President BolaTinubu has already bought a $100 million presidential jet.
A committee of the National Assembly recently recommended the purchase of a new presidential jet for the President and the President, noting that the aircraft in the Presidential Fleet are dysfunctional.
The proposal was widely rejected by some Nigerians.
However, Sowore, writing on X on Monday evening, claimed Tinubu had already purchased the jet without informing Nigerians.
He said, “While they are telling you to ‘exercise patience’ @officialABAT already bought a $100m Presidential Jet and configured or reconfigured it with some $50million and it is ready for delivery! The jet is an A330-200 initially christened VP-CAC is now registered as 5N-FGA.
“This was not in the annual budget, they can’t pay minimum wage for workers but could afford $150m for a private jet, students have to obtain loans to go to college but they could afford to approve billions for hajj even as the money/ies ended up being stolen.
Fight we MUST!”

Oborevweri urges LG chairmen, vices to prioritise good governance

0

The Delta State Governor, Sheriff Oborevwori on Monday advised newly-elected Chairmen and Vice Chairmen of the 25 Local Government Areas in the state to ensure their administration’s commitment to the betterment of their councils.

The governor also charged the chairmen and their vices to discharge their duties with “sincerity of purpose, impartiality and compassion,” among others.

Oborevwori said this in Asaba, the state capital, during the swearing-in of the newly elected chairmen and vice chairmen of the 25 LGs.

He said, “It is necessary for the chairmen to stay close to the people by operating from their area headquarters and must shun the unhealthy practice of running the local governments from offshore, especially Asaba and Warri.

“I urge you to reciprocate the huge mandate that has been given to you by giving preference to the needs and aspirations of your people to deliver good governance.”

Owing to the proximity of the LGs to the grassroots, the governor told the chairmen and their vices “to improve the environmental sanitation” in their communities saying, ”Our urban centres are riddled with filth as a result of improper waste disposal and poor sanitation habits of our people.

“I would like to see you step up in this regard by devising proper waste disposal measures while embarking on an aggressive public enlightenment campaign to educate our people on good sanitation habits.”

Oborevwori reiterated that the state government does not tamper with LG funds, saying that he welcomed the Supreme Court’s ruling on the LG autonomy.

While charging the chairmen to improve on their internally generated revenue, Oborevwori cautioned against overtaxing an already burdened populace reeling under the painful effects of the current economic hardship.

Biafra activist, Simon Ekpa, on Monday said he has returned all the medals he won for Nigeria back to the Federal Government.
This comes amid his calls for Biafra independence.
Ekpa disclosed this in a statement posted on his official X handle.
TVN recalls that Ekpa, who is known as the Prime Minister of Biafra Republic Government In-Exile, won some medals in the past as an athlete for Nigeria.
However, Finland-based Ekpa said the medals were sent back to the Nigerian government through a logistics company from Finland on Friday last week and were delivered to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Abuja, Nigeria, today, Monday, 15th July.
He said the move was to further denounce Nigeria.

“The medals were delivered today (Monday) to the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Yusuf Tuggar.
“With this development, every tie between me and Nigeria both in sports, spiritually and physically is hereby cut off completely.
“The medals are as follows: 2003 African Junior SILVER MEDAL; ExxonMobile track and field GOLD MEDAL; ExxonMobile track and field SILVER MEDAL; Other medals have nothing to do with Nigeria, so I retain them,” he said.

CDS Chris Musa reveals illegal miners’ high-level connections cost Nigeria $9bn annually

0

During an investigative hearing in Abuja, on Monday, the Chief of Defence Staff (CDS) Gen. Christopher Musa stunned lawmakers by exposing the extensive connections of illegal miners, which he claimed have severely undermined Nigeria’s economy, costing the nation an estimated $9 billion annually.
The hearing, organized by the House of Representatives Committee on Solid Minerals and chaired by Jonathan Gbefwi, highlighted alarming revelations about the detrimental impact of illegal mining activities across the country.
Gbefwi, representing Karu/Keffi/Kokona Federal Constituency, Nasarawa State, expressed deep concern over the minimal revenue generated from mining royalties, with only 3% contributing to government coffers despite the sector’s immense potential.
Gen. Musa, in his testimony, emphasized that illegal miners often operate with impunity, boasting of influential connections that shield them from legal consequences. He disclosed that the Nigerian Army has apprehended 387 individuals involved in illicit mining activities, underscoring the scale of the challenge.
“The unregulated exploitation of our mineral resources poses a grave threat to Nigeria’s economic sustainability,” Gbefwi asserted during the hearing. He underscored the need for stringent measures to curb illegal mining, protect natural resources, and enforce compliance with mining regulations.

Air Vice Marshal Nnaemeka Ilo, representing the CDS, pointed out systemic flaws in the regulatory framework governing mining in Nigeria, citing instances where mining licenses were issued in contravention of established bans and regulations. He called for strengthened institutional frameworks and advocated for severe penalties to deter illegal mining activities.
Colonel Tajudeen Lamidi, speaking on behalf of the Nigerian Army, echoed the urgency of tackling illegal mining, noting its detrimental impact on local communities and the environment. He emphasized the military’s commitment to enforcing laws against illegal mining and securing mining zones from unlawful exploitation.
The hearing also highlighted socio-economic challenges exacerbated by illegal mining, including environmental degradation, loss of agricultural land, and increased poverty among affected communities.
Tajudeen Abbas, represented by House Leader Professor Julius Ihonvbere, underscored the critical need for comprehensive measures to address these issues and protect mining communities.
As discussions continue, lawmakers are deliberating on legislative amendments and enforcement strategies to effectively combat illegal mining, safeguard Nigeria’s mineral resources, and ensure sustainable economic development for future generations.
