A High Court of the Federal Capital Territory, FCT in Maitama, has declined an application by former Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria, CBN, Godwin Emefiele asking permission to travel to the United Kingdom UK for a medical check-up.
Justice Hamza Muazu, in a ruling on Tuesday, held among others that Emefiele failed to supply sufficient materials to show that the medical trip was essential and unavoidable.
Justice Muazu found that while Emefiele claimed there was an invitation for him to travel to the UK for medical attention, he failed to tender a copy of the said invitation in court.
The judge also found that Emefiele did not show that his ailment could not be attended to in the country.

JAMB begins 2024 admission process, holds policy meeting Thursday
The Joint Admission Matriculation Board has disclosed that all the processes for the commencement of admission into tertiary institutions have been put in place.
In the board’s weekly news bulletin published on X on Monday, JAMB also revealed that the 2024 edition of the annual policy meeting will be held on Thursday.
According to the bulletin, the Minister of Education, Tahir Mamman, will chair the 2024 policy meeting, slated for July 18, in Abuja.
The policy meeting will authorise the commencement of this year’s admission.
“This year’s exercise will also feature the National Tertiary Admissions’ Performance-Merit Award, NATAP-M Awards, where the overall winner will receive N500 million, and other consolation winners will share N250 million collectively.
“The policy meeting, usually attended by vice-chancellors of universities, rectors of polytechnics, mono-technics and innovation enterprise institutes, provosts of colleges of education, and other critical stakeholders, will consider and approve the guidelines for the 2024 admission exercise.
“The meeting will review the performance of the 2023 admissions exercise and the 2024 Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination, UTME performance of candidates. The minimum admission scores, an aggregation of individual institutions’ submissions, will be approved at the meeting,” the bulletin reads.
It added, “This is not a cut-off mark, as often misconstrued, but a minimum score that no institution should go below. The decisions made at the meeting, chaired by the Minister of Education, form the guiding norms for admission and are a collective decision, not solely that of the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board, JAMB.
“No institution is expected to commence the admission process until after the policy meeting, as the guidelines regulating the year’s admission exercise are determined at the meeting with the endorsement of the Minister of Education.
“The meeting declares the commencement of the year’s admission exercise, setting the grand norms, and any institution that violates these collective norms will face sanctions.”

The Kano State House of Assembly on Tuesday passed the Kano State Emirates Council Establishment Bill 2024 after the bill scaled a third reading.
The bill was sponsored by a lawmaker representing the Rimin Gado/Tofa state constituency, Muhammad Bello Bututu.
The bill seeks to establish Kano as a first-class emirate while Rano, Gaya and Karaye would remain second-class emirates.
According to the bill, Emirs of the three second-class emirates would be answerable to the Emir of Kano and shall have powers to advise him on any matter relating to the maintenance of public order, boundary dispute or dispute between two or more people within their areas of jurisdiction.

Kano State House of Assembly on Tuesday passed a bill into law for the establishment of 2nd class Emirates in the state.
It would be recalled that the House took the first reading of the bill before embarking on recess, which they resumed yesterday.
After the second and third reading of the bill, the Deputy Speaker, Muhammad Butubutu, moved for its adoption and passage during its plenary presided over by the Speaker, Jibril Falgore.
The new second-class emirates to be created include Rano Emirate: Rano-Bunkure, Kibiya; Karaye Emirate: Karaye-Rogo; Gaya Emirate: Gaya-Ajingi, Albasu.
It should be recalled that the Kano State Government has been embroiled in an Emirship tussle for two years with Emir Muhammad Sanusi II and Aminu Ado Bayero contesting the position.

60% 2024 unity school admission to be merit-based -FG
The Federal Government on Tuesday announced three criteria for admission into the 115 unity schools across the country.
The results of the examination were announced by the Minister of State for Education, Dr. Yusuf Sununu in a press briefing in Abuja.
Recall that a total of 71,291 candidates participated in the 2024 National Common Entrance Examination conducted in 599 centres on Saturday, June 1, 2024.
NECO had released data showing that Lagos State came tops with the highest number of candidates, with 17,751 while FCT came second with 10,209 candidates and Anambra State trailed in third position with 4,972 candidates, respectively.
“It is a highly competitive examination which is administered every year to Nigerian children both at home and abroad who desire to gain admission into our 115 Federal Unity Colleges spread across all parts of the country. These FUCs continue to strengthen our unity as a country with their motto “Pro Unitate”.
“Major highlights of the NCEE results are as follows: 71,291 candidates registered for 2024 NCEE; 66,931 candidates sat for the examination; 4,360 were absent.
“Out of the maximum obtainable score of 210, one candidate obtained the highest score of 203, while 13 candidates obtained the lowest score of 1.
“This year, an unprecedented number of 52 candidates (2 candidates from Lagos State and 50 candidates from Rivers State) were involved in examination malpractice.”
“Gentlemen of the Press, the admission criteria for selection of qualified candidates into Federal Unity Colleges remain the same, these are 60% Merit; 30% Equality of State; 10% Exigency.
“Now that the results have been released, the Senior Secondary Education Department should ensure that all admission processes are concluded timely and in line with the above criteria.”

The Federal Government has announced the release of the 2024 National Common Entrance Examination, NCEE, results for admissions into JSS1 of the Federal Unity Colleges.
The Minister of State for Education, Yusuf Sununu, made this announcement at a news conference in Abuja on Tuesday.
Sununu said one candidate scored the highest mark of 203 in the examination.
According to him, of the 71,291 candidates who registered for the exams, 66,931 sat for the examination, while 4,360 were absent.
“Out of the maximum obtainable score of 210, one candidate obtained the highest score of 203, while 13 candidates obtained the lowest score of one.
“This year, an unprecedented number of 52 candidates (two candidates from Lagos State and 50 candidates from Rivers State) were involved in examination malpractice.
“For the examination conducted for the Federal Government Academy (FGA), 2,649 candidates registered for the examination, 2,336 candidates sat for the examination, while 313 candidates were absent.
“The highest score for this examination is 180 while the lowest is five,” he said.
The minister further stated that the admission criteria for selection of qualified candidates into Federal Unity Colleges remained the same.
He added that admission requirements are 60 per cent merit, 30 per cent equality of state and 10 per cent exigency.
He, therefore, charged the Senior Secondary Education Department in the ministry to ensure that all admission processes were concluded timely, and it should be done in line with the above criteria.

Presidential aide seeks medicare for injured students in Plateau school collapse
The Senior Special Assistant to the President on Students’ Engagements, Sunday Asefon, has solicited robust medicare for students, who sustained varying degrees of injuries during the school collapse in Jos, Plateau State capital.
Asefon, during the solidarity visit, remembered those who lost their lives in the highly devastating school building collapse, describing their sudden departure as saddening and mournful.
No fewer than 22 deaths and 132 injured, were recorded during a recent sudden building collapse at a primary and secondary school academy at Busa- Buji community, Jos North Local Government Area of the state.
Asefon in a statement released on Tuesday, said he visited the survivors where they were receiving treatments, like the Plateau Specialist Hospital, Jos, Bingham University Teaching Hospital, and Our Lady of Apostles Hospital.
Asefon, who engaged the Chief Medical Directors of the hospitals, appealed to the staff of the medical facilities to put up their best professional skills and rescue those who sustained severe injuries in order not to increase the death tally.
He said, “On Monday, I visited Saint Academy Jos, the scene of the Jos school building collapse that left many students dead and several persons injured
“I also visited the hospitals where the survivors were receiving treatments among which are, Plateau Specialist Hospital Jos, Bingham University Teaching Hospital, and Our Lady of Apostles Hospital.
“The kernel of my visit was to ascertain the progress made and solicit for good medical attention for them so that the deaths won’t increase further.
“I met all the Chief Medical Directors of the hospitals to discuss the progress of the treatments, as well as the Plateau State commissioner for secondary education.
“It’s my prayer that God grants the departed souls eternal rest and quick recovery for all those hospitalized”.

Police to probe CEO Blord group, Linus Williams for alleged fraud, terrorism funding
The Nigeria Police Force, on Tuesday, arrested the chief executive officer of Blord Group of Companies, Linus Williams.
This was made known in a statement by the Force Public Relations Officer, Olumuyiwa Adejobi, on Tuesday.
Blord is under investigation over complaints against him on alleged fraud, violation of the Central Bank of Nigeria Act, terrorism funding, and others.
Adejobi refuted claims that Blord’s arrest was a result of Martin Otse, aka Verydarkman’s, petition.
The statement reads: “The FCID NPF-NCCC is currently investigating complaints lodged against BLORD GROUP, BLORD REAL ESTATE LTD, BLORD JETPAYE LIMITED, and BILLPOINT TECHNOLOGY.
“These offences include allegations bordering on cryptocurrency fraud, aiding internet fraud, computer-related fraud, terrorism funding, and non-compliance with regulatory frameworks.
“We will do due diligence in our investigations. Our cyberspace in Nigeria must be safe and secure by all means.”
