The member representing the people of Delta South Senatorial District, Sen Joel-Onowakpo Thomas, has said successive federal governments have been unfair to Delta South Senatorial District.
He said in terms of infrastructural development, human capital development and inclusiveness in governance, the region has been treated unfairly.
Joel-Onowakpo made this statement during a keynote address he delivered at the Strategies Leadership Retreat organized for his legislative aides at Emede, Isoko South LGA of Delta State.
According to him, Delta South Senatorial District is one of the largest producers of crude oil and gas in the country, yet past federal administrations have shown little or no interest in the development of the area and the empowerment of the people.
“Whenever I think about what Delta South is contributing in terms of crude oil production and look at the deprivation that our people are subjected to, my heart bleeds. Delta South Senatorial District gives her all for this country, but successive governments have been largely unfair to us.
“There is hardly the presence of government in Delta South, and this is really alarming. The pollution we experience, the environmental degradation, the lack of infrastructural and human capital development, the little or no inclusivity in governance, etc., are all indicators showing how unfair governments have been to us for contributing so much,” he said.
Joel-Onowakpo, however, expressed confidence in the administration of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, stating that the President can and will change the ugly narrative.
“However, I have strong confidence in the Renewed Hope Agenda of our dear President, His Excellency, Bola Ahmed Tinubu, that he shall do his best to salvage Delta South. I trust the President that he shall look at critical issues affecting our Senatorial District, such as environmental pollution and degradation, erosion and flooding, lack of development, poor inclusiveness in government, as well as empowerment of our people.”

Devastating storm leaves 40 dead, hundreds hurt in Afghanistan
A powerful storm ripped through Afghanistan’s eastern Nangarhar province on Monday, leaving nearly 40 people dead and at least 347 injured, according to the country’s health ministry.
Ministry spokesman Sharafat Zaman, said the casualty figures are expected to rise as search and rescue efforts continue.
The storm, which brought heavy rain, battered Jalalabad city, Surkh Road, Bati Kot, and Behsud districts.
Local officials reported widespread damage to homes, with reports of an entire family of 11 buried under debris in one incident in the Surkh Road district.
Government agencies are scrambling to organize rescue efforts and provide aid.
Emergency meetings were held with aid organizations to request additional assistance.
The storm’s destructive power did not only result in fatalities, but ripped through the area’s infrastructure, with around 60 electricity pylons toppled, leaving many areas without power.
Meanwhile, local reports also detailed damage to trees, crops, telecommunication systems, and infrastructure projects.
With the storm’s impact still unfolding, Nangarhar faces a long and difficult recovery process.

Nigerian singer Simisola Kosoko popularly known in music circles as Simi has explained what communication is in a relationship and how important it is.
The mother of one who shared her thoughts on the recent episode of the Zero Conditions Podcast said that one person cannot make a relationship work.
Simi stated that communication is important because if one person is the only one investing in the relationship, the relationship can never work no matter what.

According to her, relationships require love, vulnerability, compromise, and sacrifice.

Hardship: Arewa youth laments deteriorating state of affairs in Nigeria
The Arewa Youth Consultative Forum (AYCF), has expressed concern over the deteriorating state of affairs in Nigeria.
The President General of AYCF, Yerima Shettima, in a statement on Tuesday in Kaduna said, “The prevailing harsh living conditions have reached a critical juncture, leading to escalating frustration and anger among the populace.
“The AYCF has been closely observing the burgeoning discontent, particularly among the youth, who are disproportionately suffering due to economic hardships and societal challenges.”
In the statement titled, “Addressing Harsh Living Conditions and Mounting Citizen Anger in Nigeria”, he lamented that the mounting resentment within the population has reached an alarming tipping point, with the likelihood of imminent mass protests becoming more pronounced, saying that the youth, in particular, are experiencing a profound sense of disillusionment and disenfranchisement, which has eroded their hopes for a better future.
He noted, “Widespread poverty, rampant unemployment, lack of basic amenities, and rising insecurity are cultivating an environment ripe for unrest.”
Shettima stated that the economic situation is dire, with Nigerian citizens grappling to make ends meet as the cost of living continues an upward trajectory, lamenting that the unemployment rates have surged to record levels, businesses are collapsing, and the purchasing power of the average citizen is diminishing at an alarming rate.
He said that the lack of basic services such as electricity, clean water, and healthcare is exacerbating the plight of the people, further contributing to the growing discontent, stressing that there is a palpable sense of marginalization and neglect, leading to a collective sense of betrayal towards the government.
“Should these tensions go unchecked, they could give rise to widespread protests, potentially escalating into uncontrollable unrest. However, we implore the youth to abstain from violent protests or actions that could further aggravate the situation. Violence will only breed further destruction and loss of life, without effectively addressing the root causes of our grievances,” he advised.
He also advised that Nigerians should advocate for channeling frustrations and grievances through peaceful and constructive means of engagement that can foster positive change, pointing out that it is imperative that the youths of Nigeria refrain from participating in any protests or demonstrations that could disrupt the nation’s stability.
Violence and chaos, he believed, would only deepen the crises and harm the society, stressing that instead, the youths must harness their energies towards constructive dialogue and engagement with the government to seek sustainable solutions.
He called upon the government to take immediate action to alleviate the brewing tensions and avert impending public unrest, adding that the authorities must prioritize the welfare of the citizens, working diligently to improve living conditions for all Nigerians that includes the creation of job opportunities, enhancement of social welfare programs, and provision of essential services to the needy.
He noted that there is an urgent need for comprehensive reforms across economic, social, and security sectors to foster an environment conducive to growth, development, and prosperity, appealing to the government to respond to the needs and concerns of the people, engaging with sincerity, empathy, and a clear commitment to addressing national challenges.
He noted, “The time for action is now; failure to act could result in an uncontrollable scenario of public outrage.”
He urged all Nigerians to maintain calm and composure amidst the adversities, urging Nigerians to unite to address the challenges they are facing, and work towards building a better future for current and future generations.
“Together, we can overcome these hardships and create a more prosperous and equitable society for all,” he assured.

The National Examination Council, on Tuesday, released the 2024 common entrance examination results for Unity schools.
The Minister of State for Education, Dr. Yusuf Sununu made this known during a press briefing on Tuesday about the outcome of the examinations.
Recall that a total of 71,291 candidates participated in the 2024 National Common Entrance Examination, NCEE conducted in 599 centres on Saturday, June 1, 2024.
NECO had released data showing that Lagos State came tops with the highest number of candidates, with 17,751 while FCT came second with 10,209 candidates and Anambra State trailed in third position with 4,972 candidates, respectively.
Meanwhile, NECO has also unveiled a comprehensive process for candidates to access their examination results.
This step-by-step guide offers two primary options for result checking, catering to different candidate needs.

If you have a valid token shared by someone, you can proceed directly to the result-checking phase.

CJN Ariwoola vows to uphold judicial independence, impartiality
Chief Justice of Nigeria, Olukayode Ariwoola, on Monday, reaffirmed the judiciary’s commitment to asserting its independence and impartiality in the dispensation of justice.
Speaking at a workshop on “Judicial Independence and Judge Craft” in Abuja, Ariwoola emphasized the need for judges to continually build their capacity to meet societal expectations.
While acknowledging significant progress in attaining judicial independence, the CJN noted that more efforts are required to address the challenges faced.
He pledged that the judiciary will persist in seeking improvements to remain a strong, impartial, and independent arbiter of justice and the rule of law.
Ariwoola stressed that judges must enhance their capacities to restore confidence in the judiciary, emphasizing the importance of deep legal understanding, commitment to justice, and the ability to apply principles without fear or favor.
He reiterated that judicial independence and impartiality are crucial in ensuring fair decisions based on facts and law, without external influences or pressures.
“Ongoing and sustained effort are still required to address the challenges faced. We will not relent in seeking better options and actions that will ensure that the Nigerian judiciary remains a strong, impartial and independent arbiter of justice and the rule of law,” Justice Ariwoola said.
The CJN added that judges must boost their capacities as way of restoring confidence in the judiciary.
He said, “The act and science of judging requires deep and contextual understanding of the law, commitment to do justice and the innate ability to apply legal principles to complex and often vexatious issues without fear of favor.
“I must also reiterate that the substantive requirements of judicial independence, judge craft and the art of judging are built around public expectations for judges to decide matters before them fairly impartially and on the basis of facts.
“Such decisions must go in accordance with the law, without restrictions, improper influences, inducements, pressures, threats or interference, directly or indirectly, from any quarter of for any reason.”

Nigeria looks to World Bank for $50m loan for power sector reforms
In a move aimed at bolstering its ongoing power sector reforms, the Nigerian government has requested a $50 million loan from the World Bank.
The Minister of Finance and Coordinating Minister of the Economy, Wale Edun spoke on the initiative when he met with a World Bank delegate on Monday in Abuja.
The team was led by the Country Director for Nigeria, Dr. Ndiamé Diop while the Special Adviser to the President on Energy, Ms. Olu Verheijen was in attendance.
A statement signed by the Director of Information and Public Relations, Finance Ministry, Mohammed Manga, said the meeting was held to discuss innovative ways to drive Nigeria’s power sector forward.
The statement read, “In its renewed determination to drive economic growth and development in the country, the Federal Government has continued to engage with relevant stakeholders to boost power sector investments as a major priority area for achieving the desired objective.
“The initiative will strengthen plans to roll out 3.5 million prepaid metres to enhance power distribution.
“$50 million funding for state solar plant pilots and infrastructure upgrades, with measures to support tariff frameworks, market reforms, and co-financing the Transmission Company of Nigeria’s Performance Improvement Plan.
“This collaboration aims at strengthening Nigeria’s power sector, enhancing energy access, promoting economic growth and development, improving job creation as well as poverty alleviation in line with the Renewed Hope Agenda of the present administration,” the statement added.
The loan, if approved, would be used to support several key initiatives, including:
• Solar Power Pilot Projects: The funds would be used to establish pilot projects for solar power plants across various Nigerian states. This could help assess the viability of solar energy as a large-scale power generation source in the country.
• Prepaid Meter Rollout: A significant portion of the loan would go towards the rollout of 3.5 million prepaid meters. Prepaid meters offer greater transparency and control over electricity consumption for both consumers and power companies.
• Infrastructure Upgrades: The loan would also be used to finance upgrades to existing power infrastructure. This could involve improvements to transmission and distribution networks, leading to reduced power losses and improved grid stability.
Challenges and Opportunities
Nigeria’s power sector faces significant challenges, including a lack of generation capacity, inadequate transmission infrastructure, and high energy losses. These factors contribute to frequent power outages and hinder economic development.
The proposed World Bank loan presents an opportunity to address some of these challenges. Solar power projects could help diversify Nigeria’s energy mix and reduce dependence on fossil fuels. Prepaid meters can improve revenue collection for electricity companies, allowing them to invest in infrastructure upgrades.

Shun any protest against President Tinubu – Arewa youth tells northern youths
The Arewa Youth Ambassadors, an organization focused on political awareness to enlighten the youth about their role in ensuring good leadership in Nigeria, has called on the youth in northern Nigeria to shun any protest organized against President Bola Tinubu’s administration.
Addressing newsmen in Kaduna on Monday, Namadi Duniya commented on the sacking and call for investigation of its national coordinator, Comrade Yahaya M. Abdullahi, over allegations of tribalism and corruption, and announced his replacement with Mallam Muhammad Lawal.
According to him, “The call was made after a unanimous decision was reached by the executives following an emergency meeting held on 13th July 2024 in Dutse, Jigawa State.
“We couldn’t comprehend nor explain the reason for the coordinator’s change in behavior. His statements and actions no longer represent or align with those of our organization and have therefore called for action.
“The coordinator’s recent outbursts, attacks on the government and its economic reform policies, and calls for protests have revealed his ulterior motives, hence his lack of patriotism.”
He noted that the same person who was alive and healthy, sat and watched the eight years of former President Buhari without calling for protests or attacking any of his policies, but is very comfortable doing so now.
He alleged that the reason is that Buhari is from the North, the same region he hails from, and President Tinubu is not, saying that it is tribalism and they will not accept a tribalist as their coordinator.
The chairman said, “He has equally sneaked around to collect money from his sponsors to organize a protest against this administration, turn Nigerians against President Tinubu’s administration, and possibly cause chaos. We are not with him in this; it is his position and his sponsors’, but not that of the Arewa Youth Ambassadors.”
While calling on their members to shun the protest, Duniya called on security agencies (the DSS and Police) to closely investigate him and ensure law and order is maintained, holding him responsible for any breach of public peace or chaos capable of sabotaging economic activities.
