Abure, Obi mourn Kaduna LP lawmaker, Adams

0

The National Chairman of the Labour Party, Julius Abure, on Tuesday, disclosed that he was saddened by the death of the party’s promising lawmaker, Ekene Abubakar Adams.

Until his demise, Adams was a member of the House of Representatives representing Chikun/Kajuru Federal Constituency in Kaduna State.

The chairman of the House Committee on Sports died in the early hours of Tuesday at the age of 39.

In a condolence statement issued in Abuja by the National Publicity Secretary of LP, Obiora Ifoh, the party’s chair said the news of his death came to him as a rude shock.

According to him, Adams spoke truth to power and invested heavily in his constituency in his first year in office signalling that he was in the House of Representatives for serious business.

He said, “We have interacted very closely and was one lawmaker who spoke truth to power even at his young impressionable age. Though he was barely one year in office, his impact on the Chikun/Kajuru Federal Constituency and the entire Kaduna state was huge. Just a few months ago, he donated transformers, cars and motorcycles to communities and individuals and also empowered all the ward chairmen and several women from his constituency across political divides with huge sums of money.

“This philanthropic gesture, he told me, was in fulfilment of his campaign promises. On the floor of the National Assembly, he was a notable voice and had defended the voiceless through his motions. He also made invaluable contributions to the party and offered great counsel to me on party affairs.

“On behalf of the leadership and the entire members of the party who have been mourning this great personality we offer our condolences to his immediate family, constituency, Kaduna State government and the nation over this painful demise. We pray that God will give all of us the fortitude to bear this irreparable loss. May his soul rest on the bosom of the Lord.”

Meanwhile, the 2023 presidential flagbearer of the party, Peter Obi, in a statement on Tuesday via X also mourned the loss if the lawmaker.

Obi wrote, “I am deeply saddened by the news of the passing of Ekene Abubakar Adams, a member of the Labour Party in the House of Representatives from Kaduna State. On behalf of our Party and the Obidient family worldwide, our heartfelt condolences go out to his wife, family and loved ones.

“His untimely death at the age of 39 is a tragic loss to the nation. It is in addition a blow to the much needed youth input into our political space as a nation. This tragic loss has come at a time when there is a nationwide clamour for increased youth participation in our political leadership.

Obi noted that as Chairman of the House Committee on Sports and Representative of the Chikun/Kajuru Federal Constituency, in his short tenure, made significant contributions to the development of sports in Nigeria.

“His passion and expertise in this field will be greatly missed by the nation at large. May God Almighty who called him home at this time, forgive his sins and grant him eternal rest, and grant his family and all of us the fortitude to bear his very sad irreplaceable loss.

“May God Almighty protect and bless his family always,” Obi added.

Ignore pro-Wike lawmakers on state expenditure, factional lawmakers tell Fubara

0

The Victor Oko-Jumbo-led Rivers State House of Assembly loyal to the state governor, Siminalayi Fubara, has dismissed the purported resolution passed by the Martin Amaewhule-led Assembly which barred the governor and the state government from withdrawing money from the Consolidated Revenue Fund of the state.

Speaking before the commencement of sitting in the Government House, Port Harcourt, the state capital on Tuesday, Oko-Jumbo said Amaewhule and the other lawmakers who defected from the Peoples Democratic Party to the All Progressives Congress have lost their seats, describing their siting as illegal.

Oko-Jumbo said their seats were declared vacant on December 13, 2023, by Edison Ehie, the then duly recognised Speaker of the 10th Rivers State House of Assembly.

This was contained in a statement issued by the factional Clerk of the state Assembly loyal to the state governor, G. M. Gillis-West on Tuesday.

The statement quoted Oko-Jumbo as saying, “The House states as follows: On December 11, 2023, at the 87th Legislative sitting of the House, former Speaker, Martin Amaewhule and the 24 former members defected from the Peoples Democratic Party to the All Progressives Congress.

“By virtue of Section 109(1) (g) and (2) of the 1999 Constitution, which are self-executing, and consequent upon their defection, on December 13, 2023, . Edison Ogerenye Ehie, as the then duly recognised Speaker of the 10th Rivers State House of Assembly, by virtue of a court order granted Justice Danagogo on December 12, 2023, in Suit No. PHC/3030/CS/2023, and pursuant to Section 109(2) of the 1999 Constitution, declared their seats vacant.”

Oko-Jumbo said it is laughable to have heard and seen the news of the illegal sitting of the 25 former members of the state House of Assembly, led by Amaewhule on television and social media space on July 15, 2024.

Recall that the Amaewhule-led House had during plenary on Monday passed a resolution to the effect that Fubara is not permitted to authorise the withdrawal of money from the Consolidated Revenue Fund of the State.

Amaehule also threatened a shutdown on expenditures until an Appropriation Bill for the 2024 fiscal year is presented to it by Fubara for consideration.

The pro-Wike lawmakers’ resolution directed the governor to desist from further authorisation of withdrawals from the Consolidated Revenue Fund of the state while directing all the state government ministries, commissions, agencies, departments and extra-ministerial departments to desist from spending taxpayers’ funds until the 2024 Appropriation Bill is laid before the House.

But Oko-Jumbo, according to the statement insisted that the only recognised state legislature currently in the state is the one he presides over.

“Consequent upon constitutional provisions and the declaration of their seats vacant, the recognised 10th Rivers State House of Assembly is the one led by Victor Oko-Jumbo. Thus, the Rivers State Government has ceased paying any form of salaries, allowances or statutory remunerations to the former members.

“The 10th Rivers State House of Assembly, which is the legitimate House under the leadership of Victor Oko-Jumbo is the only one recognised by law and the Rivers State Government, and thus, has been receiving all statutory allocations due the House of Assembly.

“And has been discharging its financial obligations by paying the salaries of the recognised members of the House, their aides, and allowances of the public servants in the Rivers State House of Assembly,” the statement added.

Oko-Jumbo said Amaewhule and the 24 ex-lawmakers had hinged their resolution on Section 122 of the 1999 Constitution, which empowers a state governor to continue to make appropriations for six months, from the budget of the previous fiscal year, where for any reason, he was unable to present an Appropriation Bill to the House.

He noted, “May I remind the defected members that His Excellency, Sir Siminalayi Fubara, presented the 2024 Appropriation Bill to the Rivers State House of Assembly, under the leadership of the then Speaker, Rt. Hon. Edison Ogerenye Ehie.

“It was duly passed on December 13, 2023, and assented to on December 14, 2023.”

He further said, “This House awaits to receive from His Excellency, the presentation of the Medium Term Expenditure Framework for the next three financial years, pursuant to Section 10 of the Rivers State Fiscal Responsibility Law, No 8 of 2010, in order to prepare for the 2025 fiscal year.

“The general public is, therefore, called upon to disregard and ignore those misguided former members, and also discountenance their illegal actions.

“I once again call on the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to expedite preparations towards the conduct of a bye-election to fill the vacant seats created in the Rivers State House of Assembly by the defection of Martin Amaewhule and 24 others.”

Oko-Jumbo explained that the position of the authentic state House of Assembly has been communicated to Prof. Ngozi Odu, the Deputy Governor of Rivers State; the Secretary to the Rivers State Government; the Head of the Civil Service of Rivers State; the Accountant-General; and Auditor-General of the state.

He said other institutions that have also been communicated, include the governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria; Chairman of Revenue Mobilisation, Allocation and Fiscal Commission; Accountant-General of the Federation; Group Managing Director/CEO, Zenith Bank PLC; and Managing Director/CEO of Access Bank Group.

At the commencement of legislative business, a member representing Opobo/Nkoro State Constituency and Deputy Speaker, Hon Adolphus Orubienimigha, proposed the Rivers State Vocational and Technical Training Institute Bill 2024, which passed the first reading.

The bill seeks the establishment of a comprehensive training institute where Rivers youths, including women, can access to learn and acquire requisite and industry-based skills to become self-reliant or employable where such skills are needed.

Also at plenary, the House entertained the motion to Prohibit Public Defecation, which was proposed by Deputy Speaker, Hon Adolphus Orubienimigha, demanding the declaration of public health emergency on public defecation in order to protect public health and dignity of lives and ensure environmental responsibility in the State.

The House also received a petition from the Ataba Community in Andoni Local Government Area over the ongoing land dispute between Bonny and Ataba communities, with the speaker referring the petition to the Committee on Public Complaints headed by the member representing Ahoada West State Constituency and Leader of the House, Sokari Goodboy Sokari.

Be patient with Tinubu, Lagos monarch urges Nigerians

The Oba of Lagos, Oba Rilwan Akiolu, has called on Nigerians to exercise patience with President Bola Tinubu’s government.

He made this appeal during a visit by the wife of the President, Oluremi Tinubu, to his Iga Idugaran palace in Lagos.

In a statement released on Tuesday by Mrs Tinubu’s spokesperson, Busola Kukoyi, Oba Akiolu highlighted Tinubu’s sincere intentions for the nation, emphasizing his grassroots-oriented approach.

“All that I am saying and appealing is that we should pray for Nigeria and the President. We should be patient. Everything good needs prayers,” the monarch stated.

The Oba of Lagos also advised Nigerian youths to strengthen their relationship with God, acknowledging their inherent diligence and work ethic.

“Though some youths are incurably lazy and wait to be spoon-fed, teach them not to wait for fish but to learn how to fish themselves,” he remarked.

“I assure you that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu will excel for this country. He loves Nigeria, he loves Nigerians and will do his utmost for them,” she affirmed.

Hardship: Palliatives are being diverted by politicians – HURIWA tells Tinubu

0

Human Rights Writers Association of Nigeria, HURIWA, has reminded President Bola Tinubu that the renewed hope he promised Nigerians is speedily turning to a forlorn hope.
The group made the observation more than a year after Tinubu promised Nigerians that the economic hardship that followed the sudden hike in the fuel pump price will soon give way to renewed hope.
HURIWA, in a statement signed by Emmanuel Onwubiko, its coordinator, noted that millions of Nigerians are now without food and are on the verge of imminent death from starvation.
HURIWA said “The security of lives and property of the citizenry and ensuring their well-being and welfare are the essential components that constitutionally constitute the primary and basic duty of government even as the Rights group said the President must do everything under the sun to stop the coming mass deaths of Nigerians from persistent starvation created by poor economic policies of his administration and the heightened state of insecurity and instability in Nigeria.”
TVN recalls that Tinubu had on Wednesday July 12th, 2023, in Abuja, assured Nigerians that the framework for palliatives to remedy the effects of fuel subsidy removal is being worked out, explaining that the decision to phase out the subsidy was taken in the best interest of the country.
He said the decision would guarantee future prosperity.
HURIWA recalled that the President had said that his government would ensure a full-proof social security structure that will not be compromised, especially in cash-transfer.
HURIWA bemoaned the fact that “millions of Nigerians have become desperately poor, deprived and hungry” even as the rights group said the government has failed to resolve the troubling trend of alleged corruption and alleged large scale diversion of public funds by some suspended officials of the Federal Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Alleviation.
It alleged that the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission is plotting to sweep under the carpet the accusations against the suspended minister of Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Alleviation alongside other high profile officials.
Besides, HURIWA carpeted the governors and other high profile Federal Government officials for “diverting and stealing the palliatives released by the President for the benefit of starving Nigerians”.
It asked the President to direct the Department of State Services, the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission and the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission to track and monitor the distribution of the 20 trailer loads of rice meant for each of the 36 states of the Federation and the FCT because, according to it, substantial percentages of previously released palliatives were stolen by top government officials and politicians.

Netizens react as Tinubu’s SSA appoint ‘angry’ skitmaker, Umar Bush as his own SA

The internet has been buzzing after it was discovered that the Senior Special Assistant to the President On Special Needs and Equal Opportunities, Mohammed Abba Isa, has appointed Alhaji Umar Bush, an Hausa skit maker known for his ‘anger’ and hurling insults at people, as his own Special Assistant.
According to the letter of appointment from the SSA to Bush who is also known as ‘Angry Bird’, he is tasked with managing media promotion, ensure good public relation, and facilitate entertainment initiatives for Isa’s office.
The appointment which is for two years with effect from July 10, 2024, is renewable upon satisfactory performance for another term.
But the appointment of Bush has not gone down well with some social media users who think it is a misplaced priority and a needless and impulsive appointment.
Those in this school of thought are of the opinion that Bush’s skits where he practically lays out curses on people, believe he has not added anything of importance to the society.
A user on X with the handle @el_bonga, in a post, said:
“Umar Bush whose major hallmark is raining curses online is appointed SA on Entertainment while Khalifa Aminu who invents technology to help the blind walk without sticks and automatic spray plant for farmers is ignored.

Hardship: I foresee Nigerian government officials being stoned – Prophet Olujobi

0

General Overseer of Wisdom Church Of Christ International, Lagos, Prophet Bisi Olujobi on Tuesday urged the President Bola Tinubu administration to address the hardship in Nigeria.
In a statement, Olujobi, who recently led the League of Concerned Prophets to protest the government’s “biting policies”, said poverty could force citizens to vent their anger publicly.
“Many Governors, lawmakers and other government officials will be stoned before December as a result of the lingering suffering across the nation,” he warned.
“I foresee a mother of all revolution that will unseat this government and a number of governors if the right things are not done immediately.
“Nigerians are not asking for too much; their patience should not be misconstrued as foolishness. The fury coming is going to be like a tsunami with consequences.
“The President should look inward and do the needful now that there is still time. Anybody or group telling him not to be worried is just being deceptive.”
Olujobi, however, advised the Central Bank of Nigeria, CBN, Governor, Yemi Cardoso, to stay away from similar actions that put his predecessor, Godwin Emefiele, in trouble.
The church leader also admonished parents and guardians to earnestly intercede for their children and wards in the entertainment industry.
“Many are being recruited into strange occult practices. Almost all Nigerian entertainers have fallen for this bait and the consequence will be disastrous,” he said.
On the forthcoming election in Ghana, the prophet appealed to parties, politicians, and the people to shun acts that may lead to unrest.
“The Nana Akufo-Addo-led government should avoid any occurrence that will destabilize the country; such will have a serious consequence,” the statement added.
