PDP hails judgment affirming Ighodalo’s candidacy 

The Peoples Democratic Party has praised the judgment of the Federal High Court, which confirmed the nomination of its candidate, Dr. Asue Ighodalo, for the September 21, 2024, Governorship election in Edo State.

On July 4, Justice Inyang Ekwo of the Federal High Court in Abuja invalidated the PDP primary election.

This decision was the result of a lawsuit (FHC/ABJ/CS/165/2024) filed by discontented delegates, represented by Kelvin Mohammed.

The judge nullified the primaries because 378 delegates, who had the right to vote, were unlawfully excluded, violating legal requirements.

The court identified substantial breaches of the Electoral Act 2022, PDP guidelines, and the party’s constitution during the primary held at Samuel Ogbemudia Stadium in Benin.

The PDP appealed this ruling last Wednesday.

However, the Federal High Court in Abuja confirmed Ighodalo as the legitimately nominated governorship candidate of the PDP in Edo State.

In a judgment delivered on Wednesday by Justice James Omotosho in the case marked CS/469/24, the court ruled   that Ighodalo was properly nominated at the PDP primaries held on February 22 in Benin City.

As a result, the court dismissed the lawsuit challenging his nomination.

Reacting to the judgment, the PDP, through its National Publicity Secretary, Debo Ologunagba, stated that it was clear that Ighodalo was the choice of the majority of the people of Edo State.

The statement read in part, “The Party describes the landmark judgement which upheld the PDP Edo State Governorship Primary election held on February 22, 2024, at the Samuel Ogbemudia Stadium in Benin City as a victory for democracy, rule of law and a well-founded affirmation of the propriety and credibility of the primary election and PDP’s internal democracy.

“The spontaneous jubilation across Edo State at the news of the judgement reaffirms the PDP’s candidate, Dr. Asue Ighodalo as the undisputed preference of the majority of the people of Edo State in the coming Governorship election.

“The party notes that the judgement further validates the fact that all the aspirants at the Governorship Primary election were accorded level playing ground in the conduct of the Edo State PDP Congresses and Governorship Primary election that produced Dr. Asue Ighodalo as a candidate.

“The PDP congratulates Dr. Asue Ighodalo and urges all party members to remain united and continue to work together with the majority of the people of Edo State to ensure the victory of our party and candidate in the September 21, 2024 governorship election.”

Troops arrest 7 suspects in Plateau, recover weapons

Troops of Operation Safe Haven and III Division of the Nigerian Army, Rukuba, near Jos, have arrested seven suspects and recovered various types of arms and ammunition from communities in the Fann District of Barkin-Ladi Local Government Area of Plateau.
The Acting Deputy Director of Army Public Relations of the division, Maj. Aliyu Danja, made this known while addressing newsmen on Wednesday.
Danja said the arrest and recovery of weapons followed an operation conducted by troops between July 10 and June 16.
”A tactical team of III Div and OPSH while conducting an operation to recover arms from gunrunner’s hideout at Sangasa community in Fann District, was attacked in the early hours of July 10.
”During the operation, a member of the team, an Assistant Superintendent of Immigration, Christopher Agwom, was killed by the criminals.
”Following the incident, troops conducted a follow-on operation in the district to recover illegal arms and ammunition and other dangerous weapons.
”During the operations that lasted for one week, the team arrested seven suspects and recovered both automatic and locally fabricated weapons, as well as different calibres of ammunition from Ratas, Ratoso and Sangasa communities, all in Fann district,” he said.
According to him, the weapons recovered during the operation include six AK-47 rifles, 16 locally fabricated AK-47 rifles,15 Dane guns, five AK-47 magazines and one AK-47 drum magazine with a capacity of 75 rounds.
He added that other weapons recovered include 250 rounds of 7.62 mm (Special), two cartridges, and seven motorcycles, among others.
”Also, as part of efforts to arrest criminals complicit in criminal activities in Fann and environs, the following persons are hereby declared wanted by security agencies: Timothy Dung also known as Timaya, Sam P, Dachun Job and Yakubu Ishaku.
”Let me assure Plateau citizens that his sacrifice will not be in vain as we would not be deterred by false propaganda by miscreants and other misguided persons.
”III Div and OPSH remain resolute in their drive to rid the entire joint operations area of criminalities,” he said.
Danja explained that the slain officer had been buried at his hometown, Risek, Jos East local government area of the state, on Tuesday.

BREAKING: Tinubu seeks injection of N6.2tn into 2024 budget

President Bola Tinubu has forwarded to the Senate for consideration and approval the injection of N6.2 trillion into the N27.5 trillion 2024 budget.

The President, in the request via a letter read on the floor of the Senate by its President, Godswill Akpabio, during plenary on Wednesday, specifically sought for withdrawal of N3.2 trillion from the Consolidated Revenue Fund, for capital expenditure.

The President in the second leg of the request sought for withdrawal of another N3 trillion from the consolidated revenue fund for additional recurrent expenditure for the year ending on December 31, 2024.

According to the letter, Tinubu is also seeking an Act to amend the Finance Act of 2023, to impose and charge windfall tax on banks and to provide for the administration of the tax and matters related thereto.

For expeditious consideration, the Senate had already listed the two requests on its Order Paper as Executive bills for consideration.

If the requested N6 2 trillion is injected into the N27 5 trillion 2024 budget, the budget size will increase to N33.7 trillion.

Lagos denies return of monthly sanitation, movement restrictions

The Lagos State Government on Wednesday stated that it has not re-introduced the monthly environmental sanitation and is not starting any movement restriction by July.

The Commissioner for the Environment and Water Resources, Tokunbo Wahab, stated that those behind the report are mischief makers who are keen on confusing residents.

This was contained in a statement by the ministry’s Director of Public Affairs, Kunle Adeshina.

Wahab urged all residents to disregard the content of the viral fake news and go about their lawful business endeavour, adding that there will be no restriction of movements on the last Saturday of July as erroneously included in the fake news.

The commissioner explained that what Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu announced on Sunday during a sanitation sensitisation exercise at Campos playground Lagos Island was that the state will start a weekly community-based sensitisation and awareness exercise that will involve all residents.

“The governor also stated that State Government officials will lead from the front every week by going round to join residents in voluntarily cleaning their environment while preaching the message,” he said.

Wahab added that at no time did the governor make a pronouncement that the monthly exercise and restriction would start in July or any other month for now.

The commissioner urged all residents to imbibe the culture of cleaning their surroundings all the time and not wait until the government declares a particular month for the commencement of sanitation or restriction of movement.

Phillip Shaibu has reacted to the court judgement reinstating him as the Deputy Governor of Edo State.
TVN earlier reported that a Federal High Court sitting in Abuja on Wednesday, nullified Shaibu’s impeachment.
Justice James Omotosho, who gave the judgment, ordered his reinstatement to office on the grounds that the Edo State House of Assembly failed to comply with due process in the impeachment.
Reacting, Shaibu while addressing journalists at the Court’s premises, said the development was a product of prayers offered by Nigerians.
The embattled Deputy Governor dedicated his victory to God, stressing that it wouldn’t have been possible without the prayers of concerned Nigerians.
He said, “I want to thank Justice James Omotosho for his courage, he has restored the confidence that truly, the judiciary is the last hope of a common man and as a common person, justice has been done.
“Many Nigerians told me that they were praying for me. I want to tell them that God has answered our prayers. I dedicate this to God. I trust God that this judgement has reaffirmed the foundation of democracy in Nigeria”.

Court throws out suit challenging Arabic inscription on Naira notes

A Federal High Court in Lagos yesterday dismissed a suit praying for the Arabic inscriptions on Naira notes be removed.
Justice Yellin Bogoro declared that the Lagos-based lawyer, Chief Malcolm Omirhobo, who filed the suit, failed to prove that the use of Arabic inscriptions on the Naira notes by the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) was in bad faith.
The lawyer had in 2020 filed the suit, contending that having Arabic inscriptions on the Naira notes portrayed Nigeria as an Islamic state, contrary to the country’s constitutional status of a secular state.
Omirhobo said he did not know what the Arabic inscriptions meant.
He prayed the court to order the CBN to replace the Arabic inscriptions with either English language, which is Nigeria’s official language, or any of the country’s three main indigenous languages – Hausa, Yoruba or Igbo.
He noted that with the Arabic inscriptions on the Naira notes, the CBN has been violating sections 10 and 55 of the Nigerian Constitution, which make the country a secular state.
He asked the court to restrain the CBN from “further approving, printing and issuing naira notes with Arabic inscriptions, bearing in mind that Nigeria is a secular state.”
The CBN, however, filed a counter-affidavit in opposition to the suit.
In the counter-affidavit deposed to by one Abiola Lawal, the CBN maintained that contrary to Omirhobo’s claim “the Ajami inscriptions on some of the country’s currencies do not connote any religious statements or Arabian alignment.”
The CBN also tackled the lawyer on the claim that the Arabic inscriptions were a threat to Nigeria’s secular status.
The apex bank said: “The inscriptions on the country’s currencies do not and at no time have they threatened the secular statehood of the nation nor have they violated the Constitution of Nigeria, as every design and inscription was finalised with the approval of the relevant government bodies.
“Ajami inscriptions” on the naira notes dated back to the colonial era “and they do not imply that Arabic is an official language in Nigeria.
“The naira notes retained the inscriptions with Ajami since 1973 when the name of the Nigerian currency was changed to naira from pounds.

“The Ajami was inscribed on the country’s currency by the colonialists to aid those without Western education in certain parts of the country, who, back then, constituted a larger part of the populace.
“The Ajami is not a symbol or mark of Islam but an inscription to aid the populace uneducated in Western education in ease of trade.”
While encouraging the court to reject Omirhobo’s suit, the CBN pleaded that removing the Arabi inscriptions from the naira notes “would cost the tax-paying Nigerians and the Federal Government colossal sum of money to discard the existing naira notes and print new ones in satisfaction of the plaintiff.”
Justice Bogoro asserted that though Omirhobo had the locus standi to file the suit, he “failed to prove that the 1st defendant designs, issues, prints and distributes the naira notes with Arabic inscription in bad faith,” and accordingly dismissed the suit.
Omirhobo, however, said though the judge dismissed the suit, he advised the CBN to “remove the Arabic inscription on the N200, N500 and N1,000 notes since it has been removed from the N5, N10, N50 and N100 noted.”
“The judge reasoned that the Arabic inscriptions should be removed since “Nigeria is a secular state and that no religion is superior to the other.”
“The court noted that Nigeria is a multi-ethnic and religious country and that no ethnic group or religion is superior to the other. The court noted that the Arabic language is not Nigeria’s official Language and advised that for Nigerians to coexist in harmony, it is high time the Central Bank of Nigeria and the Federal Government removed the Arabic inscription on the N200, N500 and N1,000 naira notes since it has been removed from the N5, N10, N50 and N100 notes,” Omirhobo said.
However, the lawyer filed a similar suit against the Nigerian Army, seeking the removal of Arabic inscriptions from the logo of the Nigerian Army.
Like the CBN, the Army also opposed Omirhobo’s suit and urged the court to throw it out.

JUST IN: Abuja court orders reinstatement of Shaibu as Edo deputy governor

Justice James Omotosho of the Federal High Court in Abuja has given a ruling voiding the impeachment of Phillip Shaibu as the Deputy Governor of Edo State.
Delivering judgment on Wednesday, Justice Omotosho emphasized that the Edo State House of Assembly had failed to adhere to due process in impeaching Shuaibu.
In his verdict, Justice Omotosho directed that Shaibu be immediately reinstated to his former office, declaring the appointment of the new Deputy Governor who replaced him null and void.

Nigerian Govt committed to climate justice, energy transition – Minister

The Minister of Environment, Balarabe Abbas Lawal, on Tuesday, declared that the Nigerian Government is totally committed to ensuring climate justice and just energy transition.
He gave the assurance while expressing concern over the effects of the ravaging climate change globally, noting that Nigeria as a developing country was worst hit by the changing conditions.
He said even though Nigeria and Africa as a whole contributed the least, in terms of emission of greenhouse gases into the atmosphere, they were the worst hit by the impacts of climate change due to limited adaptive capacity to cope with the impacts.
The Minister, represented by Mrs Uduak Ekpa, made this known at the Coal City University, Enugu, during the maiden ‘Climate Justice and Just Energy Transition in Developing Countries Conference’, held in honour of Prof. Chinedum Nwajiuba’s 60th birthday.
Recall that Prof. Nwaniuba was the former Vice-Chancellor, Federal University, Ndufu Alike Ikwo, in Ebonyi State and later elected as the Chair of the Board, West African Science Service Centre on Climate Change and Adapted Land Use (WASCAL
Lawal disclosed that climate justice and just energy transition was at the centre of the development discourse in Africa and globally because energy was a key driver of economic and social well being everywhere.
He declared that the federal government, in its effort to ensure a just and equitable energy transition, had launched the National Clean Cooking policy with the overall goal of providing sustainable adaptable forms of clean energy and low-carbon energy access to all Nigerians.
“Today’s event is uniquely special because we are honouring and celebrating an embodiment of excellence and leadership, an icon, a model and global masterpiece and a voice in climate change and energy space.
“Climate change is one of the most critical global challenges of our times with attendant environmental, cultural, political and socioeconomic consequences.
“This is evident as millions of vulnerable people face disproportionate challenges in terms of extreme events, health effects, food, water, and livelihood security, migration and forced displacement, loss of cultural identity, and other related risks.
“These disproportionately far-reaching consequences of climate change call for the urgent need for climate justice and just energy transition.
“Government on its part will continue to create enabling environment for all, and collaborate with relevant stakeholders, NGOs, CBOs, and international organizations in ensuring equitable access to resource and u of energy sources, strengthen energy infrastructure, create public awareness and education, build capacities and skills, engage community, create green jobs and address security concerns in meeting its national commitment.
“To this end, the Ministry is open for collaboration and partnership,” he said.
A former House of Representatives member, Hon Sam Onuigbo, while delivering a lecture with the topic, “Climate Change Act: Implications for Climate Action in Nigeria”, called for inclusion of climate change in school curriculum to ensure early awareness and understanding.
He declared that good legislation would equally play critical roles in tackling the climate change consequences in the country.
According to him, “Parliamentarians can play a crucial role in addressing this challenge, ensuring government accountability, and effectiveness as well as providing a vital knowledge link with constituents, both aspects being important in ensuring a country’s response and resilience to climate change.
“Parliamentarians also have the opportunity to promote the voice of citizens at home and during international negotiations.
“This aptly captures the critical role of legislators in the battle against climate change.
“Without legislators making the laws, providing oversight, engendering knowledge sharing with their constituents, and generally holding everyone accountable, no country will effectively meet its climate change goals and obligations.
“It is, therefore, appropriate to state here that, aware of the importance of the role of legislation for climate change, the government of the United Kingdom set the ball rolling in 2008 with the first standalone climate change legislation. Other countries of the world followed suit.”

Police foil kidnap attempt in Abuja

A resident of El-Rufai Estate in the Bwari Area of the Federal Capital Territory identified as Nathaniel has been shot by kidnappers after an attempt to kidnap him was foiled.

The kidnappers numbering over 15 had invaded the estate around 2 am on Wednesday and shot sporadically.

Our correspondent gathered that the kidnappers had attempted to abduct many of the residents before their operation was thwarted by the operatives of the FCT police command in collaboration with troops.

A resident who gave his name as Saliu told our correspondent that the police and kidnappers engaged themselves in a fierce gun duel that lasted for about 30 minutes.

He added that the kidnappers were unable to abduct anyone from the estate but shot one resident they were trying to take away.

Saliu said, “Around 2 am on Wednesday, some kidnappers numbering about 15 came to the Elrufai Estate here. All of them were carrying guns and they were shooting non-stop.

“The kidnappers attempted to kidnap some persons. You know in this area we have experienced a lot of kidnappings in the past but recently the police have been very active.

“Fortunately, the police came on time and they exchanged fire with those kidnappers. This lasted for about 30 minutes or so but at the end of the day, nobody was taken away by the kidnappers. However, the kidnappers shot one Nathaniel. They wanted to take him away but they couldn’t. ”

When contacted, the FCT police command spokesperson Josephine Adeh confirmed the incident.

She added that the police are on the trail of the kidnappers.

Adeh said, “We received a distress call and the DPO of Bwari mobilized his men along with the military and swiftly repelled the miscreants in a gun duel. No one was kidnapped.

“The police are on the trail of the kidnappers.”
