Lagos State Government says it has not re-introduced the monthly environmental sanitation and is not starting any restriction of movement by the end of July.
This is contained in a statement on Wednesday by the State Commissioner for the Environment and Water Resources, Tokunbo Wahab.
Wahab described the viral social media news as fake and said it was the handiwork of mischief makers who are keen on confusing residents.
He called on the residents to disregard the content of the viral news and go about their lawful business endeavour, adding that there would be no restriction of movements on the last Saturday of July as erroneously included in the fake news.
According to him, what the Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu announced on Sunday during a sanitation sensitisation exercise at Campos playground Lagos island was that the state will start a weekly community-based sensitisation and awareness exercise that will involve all residents.
“The Governor also stated that State Government officials will lead from the front every week by going round to join residents in voluntarily cleaning their environment while preaching the message,” he said.
The Commissioner further said that at no time did the Governor make a pronouncement that the monthly exercise and restriction would start in July or any other month for now.
He, therefore, urged all residents to imbibe the culture of cleaning their surroundings all the time and not wait until the government declares a particular month for the commencement of sanitation or restriction of movement.

Abia State Governor Alex Otti has handed over the Certificate of Occupancy, CofO, of the land donated to the Federal government for the establishment of a Federal College of Education in Ofoeme.
While handing over land documents at Nvosi, Isiala Ngwa South on Tuesday, the Governor also set up a four-man committee headed by the Secretary to the Abia State government, Professor Kenneth Kalu to ensure that the proposed September 2024 deadline set by the Federal Government for the takeoff of the institution is realized.
Otti at the event said although the state government already has a College of Education which his administration is working hard to retrieve from the ruins of abandonment, one college of education is not enough to train the number of teachers his state needs.
“We do have a College of Education here that has been abandoned over the years. We are working very hard to retrieve it – the state College of Education in Arochukwu. But, we strongly believe that one College of Education is not enough to train the kind of teachers and the numbers that we require”.
Governor Otti hinted that having already done what many considered ingenious by increasing the retirement age of teachers from 60 to 65 years, his administration is considering extending it to 70 years with a discriminatory package to attract people to the teaching profession.
Otti pledged Abia’s support to the Federal government for the realization of the September deadline set to start the institution.

King Charles outlines Starmer’s plans for Britain
King Charles III outlined Labour’s first programme for government in 15 years on Wednesday, with promises of economic stability and tougher action on irregular immigration to improve relations with Europe soured by Brexit.
“We will unlock growth and take the brakes off Britain,” Prime Minister Keir Starmer said in introductory remarks to the King’s Speech, a centuries-old tradition full of pomp and ceremony that details the laws the government proposes to make over the next 12 months.
Despite its name, the address, which marks the official start of the new parliamentary session, is not written by the monarch as head of state but by the government. It was centre-left Labour’s first such speech since it was last in power in 2010.
Wearing the diamond-studded Imperial State Crown, his Admiral of the Fleet uniform and the crimson Robe of State, Charles delivered Labour’s proposals from a golden throne in the House of Lords upper chamber after a carriage procession from Buckingham Palace.
The speech included more than 35 bills, including measures to enforce public spending rules and an independent assessment of future budgets to prevent a repeat of former prime minister Liz Truss’s disastrous 2022 mini-budget that tanked the economy.
The legislation fleshed out several announcements already made, such as the launching of a wealth fund to draw investment into the UK to spur growth and of a publicly owned body tasked with boosting clean energy by 2030.
Labour also announced an acceleration of housebuilding and plans to take Britain’s much-maligned rail services back into public hands.
There was also detail of a new border security command with beefed-up “counter-terror powers” to curb “immigration crime” — Starmer’s pledge to “smash the gangs” behind migrant crossings of the Channel from northern France.

Labour returned to government following a landslide win against Rishi Sunak’s Conservatives earlier this month, in which the hard-right Reform UK party led by the eurosceptic Nigel Farage secured five seats.
“The snake oil charm of populism may sound seductive, but it drives us into the dead end of further division and greater disappointment,” Starmer said Wednesday, pledging to lead a government of “service”.
The King’s Speech included a bill to strengthen workers’ rights and plans to reform the unelected House of Lords by scrapping the right of those with hereditary titles to sit there.
Sunak’s proposal to phase out smoking also made it, as did plans for a football regulator.
Labour also pledged to repeal a controversial act that granted conditional immunity to perpetrators of crimes in Northern Ireland during the Troubles era of sectarian violence.
“This is a hungry party,” former Labour minister Tony McNulty told AFP before the speech. “They are chomping at the bit to show that they can get back to being what they see as the natural party of government.”
The legislative agenda made no mention of lowering the voting age to 16 or ending a controversial two-child limit for welfare payments, wanted by many Labour MPs.
– Ceremonial ‘hostage’ –
The day’s ceremonials started when royal bodyguards ritually searched the basement of the Palace of Westminster for explosives — a legacy of the failed attempt by Catholics to blow up parliament in 1605.
The king then travelled from Buckingham Palace, escorted by mounted cavalry, en route to the Houses of Parliament.
A smattering of anti-monarchy protesters chanted “Not my king” outside parliament, while the Metropolitan Police said 10 members of the activist group Youth Demand were arrested on suspicion of conspiracy to cause public nuisance.
An MP was ceremonially held “hostage” in the palace to ensure the king’s safe return.
A parliamentary official known as Black Rod had the door of the lower-chamber House of Commons slammed in her face, a tradition that symbolises parliament’s independence from the monarchy.
MPs then followed Black Rod to the upper chamber, where Charles gave the speech to assembled lords and ladies in red robes with ermine fur, plus invited members of the elected Commons.
In keeping with the convention that the monarch is above politics, he remained expressionless throughout.
Sunak, who intends to step down as Tory leader once a successor is found, said Labour had “tapped into the public’s desire for change” and “must now deliver change”.

Edo Assembly opposes court order reinstating Shaibu as dep gov, files appeal
The Edo State House of Assembly has filed an appeal against the judgment of Justice J. K. Omotosho of the Federal High Court, Abuja, which overturned the impeachment of the state’s former deputy governor, Philip Shaibu.
In response to Justice Omotosho’s ruling earlier today, the State Assembly has also submitted a stay of execution on the judgment pending the outcome of their appeal.
Justice Omotosho, in his verdict, nullified Shaibu’s impeachment as the deputy governor, citing the Assembly’s failure to adhere to due process during the impeachment proceedings. He further invalidated the appointment of the new deputy governor who replaced Shaibu.
Shaibu’s rift with Governor Godwin Obaseki stemmed from his aspiration to succeed his boss. Despite Obaseki’s endorsement of Asue Ighodalo as his preferred candidate, Shaibu and nine others contested against Ighodalo, who eventually secured the nomination.

Following the nomination process, the Edo State House of Assembly impeached Shaibu on Monday, April 8, 2024, following the adoption of a report by a seven-man investigative panel chaired by retired Justice S.A. Shaibu declined to appear before the panel during its proceedings.
Shaibu’s impeachment was supported by 18 out of 19 members present during the Assembly’s plenary session, with one member abstaining from the vote.
Governor Godwin Obaseki subsequently appointed Marvellous Omobayo as his new deputy following Shaibu’s impeachment, to serve out the remainder of his second term in office, which concludes on November 11, 2024.

PDP hails judgment affirming Ighodalo’s candidacy
The Peoples Democratic Party has praised the judgment of the Federal High Court, which confirmed the nomination of its candidate, Dr. Asue Ighodalo, for the September 21, 2024, Governorship election in Edo State.
On July 4, Justice Inyang Ekwo of the Federal High Court in Abuja invalidated the PDP primary election.
This decision was the result of a lawsuit (FHC/ABJ/CS/165/2024) filed by discontented delegates, represented by Kelvin Mohammed.
The judge nullified the primaries because 378 delegates, who had the right to vote, were unlawfully excluded, violating legal requirements.
The court identified substantial breaches of the Electoral Act 2022, PDP guidelines, and the party’s constitution during the primary held at Samuel Ogbemudia Stadium in Benin.
The PDP appealed this ruling last Wednesday.
However, the Federal High Court in Abuja confirmed Ighodalo as the legitimately nominated governorship candidate of the PDP in Edo State.
In a judgment delivered on Wednesday by Justice James Omotosho in the case marked CS/469/24, the court ruled that Ighodalo was properly nominated at the PDP primaries held on February 22 in Benin City.
As a result, the court dismissed the lawsuit challenging his nomination.
Reacting to the judgment, the PDP, through its National Publicity Secretary, Debo Ologunagba, stated that it was clear that Ighodalo was the choice of the majority of the people of Edo State.
The statement read in part, “The Party describes the landmark judgement which upheld the PDP Edo State Governorship Primary election held on February 22, 2024, at the Samuel Ogbemudia Stadium in Benin City as a victory for democracy, rule of law and a well-founded affirmation of the propriety and credibility of the primary election and PDP’s internal democracy.
“The spontaneous jubilation across Edo State at the news of the judgement reaffirms the PDP’s candidate, Dr. Asue Ighodalo as the undisputed preference of the majority of the people of Edo State in the coming Governorship election.
“The party notes that the judgement further validates the fact that all the aspirants at the Governorship Primary election were accorded level playing ground in the conduct of the Edo State PDP Congresses and Governorship Primary election that produced Dr. Asue Ighodalo as a candidate.
“The PDP congratulates Dr. Asue Ighodalo and urges all party members to remain united and continue to work together with the majority of the people of Edo State to ensure the victory of our party and candidate in the September 21, 2024 governorship election.”
Troops arrest 7 suspects in Plateau, recover weapons
Troops of Operation Safe Haven and III Division of the Nigerian Army, Rukuba, near Jos, have arrested seven suspects and recovered various types of arms and ammunition from communities in the Fann District of Barkin-Ladi Local Government Area of Plateau.
The Acting Deputy Director of Army Public Relations of the division, Maj. Aliyu Danja, made this known while addressing newsmen on Wednesday.
Danja said the arrest and recovery of weapons followed an operation conducted by troops between July 10 and June 16.
”A tactical team of III Div and OPSH while conducting an operation to recover arms from gunrunner’s hideout at Sangasa community in Fann District, was attacked in the early hours of July 10.
”During the operation, a member of the team, an Assistant Superintendent of Immigration, Christopher Agwom, was killed by the criminals.
”Following the incident, troops conducted a follow-on operation in the district to recover illegal arms and ammunition and other dangerous weapons.
”During the operations that lasted for one week, the team arrested seven suspects and recovered both automatic and locally fabricated weapons, as well as different calibres of ammunition from Ratas, Ratoso and Sangasa communities, all in Fann district,” he said.
According to him, the weapons recovered during the operation include six AK-47 rifles, 16 locally fabricated AK-47 rifles,15 Dane guns, five AK-47 magazines and one AK-47 drum magazine with a capacity of 75 rounds.
He added that other weapons recovered include 250 rounds of 7.62 mm (Special), two cartridges, and seven motorcycles, among others.
”Also, as part of efforts to arrest criminals complicit in criminal activities in Fann and environs, the following persons are hereby declared wanted by security agencies: Timothy Dung also known as Timaya, Sam P, Dachun Job and Yakubu Ishaku.
”Let me assure Plateau citizens that his sacrifice will not be in vain as we would not be deterred by false propaganda by miscreants and other misguided persons.
”III Div and OPSH remain resolute in their drive to rid the entire joint operations area of criminalities,” he said.
Danja explained that the slain officer had been buried at his hometown, Risek, Jos East local government area of the state, on Tuesday.

President Bola Tinubu has forwarded to the Senate for consideration and approval the injection of N6.2 trillion into the N27.5 trillion 2024 budget.
The President, in the request via a letter read on the floor of the Senate by its President, Godswill Akpabio, during plenary on Wednesday, specifically sought for withdrawal of N3.2 trillion from the Consolidated Revenue Fund, for capital expenditure.
The President in the second leg of the request sought for withdrawal of another N3 trillion from the consolidated revenue fund for additional recurrent expenditure for the year ending on December 31, 2024.
According to the letter, Tinubu is also seeking an Act to amend the Finance Act of 2023, to impose and charge windfall tax on banks and to provide for the administration of the tax and matters related thereto.
For expeditious consideration, the Senate had already listed the two requests on its Order Paper as Executive bills for consideration.
If the requested N6 2 trillion is injected into the N27 5 trillion 2024 budget, the budget size will increase to N33.7 trillion.

Phillip Shaibu has reacted to the court judgement reinstating him as the Deputy Governor of Edo State.
TVN earlier reported that a Federal High Court sitting in Abuja on Wednesday, nullified Shaibu’s impeachment.
Justice James Omotosho, who gave the judgment, ordered his reinstatement to office on the grounds that the Edo State House of Assembly failed to comply with due process in the impeachment.
Reacting, Shaibu while addressing journalists at the Court’s premises, said the development was a product of prayers offered by Nigerians.
The embattled Deputy Governor dedicated his victory to God, stressing that it wouldn’t have been possible without the prayers of concerned Nigerians.
