Reps to donate 50% of salaries to fight hunger

The House of Representatives at a plenary session on Thursday pledged to give up 50 per cent of their salaries for six months to address the hunger across the country.

During the session presided over by Speaker Tajudeen Abbas, Deputy Speaker Benjamin Kalu amended the motion, urging his colleagues to sacrifice 50% of their salaries. He made this plea when it was his turn to speak, seeking their support for this gesture.

“This government is doing its best but one year is not enough to address the challenges of this country. I want to plead with our colleagues to sacrifice 50 per cent for a period of six months.

“Our salary is N600,000 a month. I want to plead that we let go of 50 per cent of our salary for a period of six months,” Kalu said.

With each member paying N300,000 into a common purse, the legislative chamber will be contributing N108m monthly to the Federal Government and N648m for six months.

Appeal court dismiss Sylvia’s petition, upholds Diri’s tribunal victory

A three-man panel of Justices of the Court of Appeal, Abuja division, on Thursday, dismissed the appeal of the All Progressive Congress and its governorship candidate, Timipre Sylva, seeking to set aside the Bayelsa governorship election Tribunal judgment.

The appellate court while delivering judgment in the appeal, upheld Governor Douye Diri of the Peoples Democratic Party re-election victory.

The court held that it found no reason to set aside the earlier judgment of the tribunal which refused to nullify the outcome of the governorship poll held in the state on November 11, 2023.

The court dismissed Sylvia’s appeal for being incompetent and lacking in merit.

The appellate court also awarded N500,000 each as a cost in favour of the respondents.

Customs intercept bulletproof jackets, drugs worth N3.6bn in Ogun

The Nigeria Customs Service, Federal Operations Unit, Zone A Ikeja said it intercepted 150 cartons of bulletproof jackets worth N1.687bn.

Addressing journalists in Ikeja on Thursday, the Customs Area Controller in charge of the unit, Kola Oladeji, said the contrabands were intercepted along the Ijebuode-Sagamu Expressway in Ogun state.

Oladeji explained that each carton contains 10 packs of the jacket, adding that these contrabands were seized in June.

He explained that under Schedule 4 of the Customs Common External Tariff, the importation of all kinds of military wares by individuals is under absolute prohibition.

“An end-user certificate is required for the importation of controlled items and products into Nigeria and it comes from the Office of the National Security Adviser,” Oladeji said.

Oladeji vowed that the unit is working on credible intelligence to get the importers of these contrabands.

“These seizures were unique because it was a breach of security, no end-user-certificate

“Because you get the certificate before you can bring your cargo and if you bring it after importation we would arrest you,” he said.

The CAC said the unit also intercepted kilograms of cannabis sativa and expired drugs within the period under review.

“Our dedicated officers also intercepted 989kilograms of cannabis sativa and 5,229 cartons of expired drugs,”

According to him, some of the interceptions took place at various times and locations within the South-Western States.

“Other items seized include, 343,750 liters of premium motor spirit, 7,150 bags of foreign parboiled rice, 32 units of used vehicles, 120 bags of sugar, 3,560 cartons of poultry products,” the CAC said.

The CAC stated that four suspects were arrested in connection with the various offenses, “including violating import/export guidelines, concealment, wrong classification, smuggling, and contravening policy directives,”

He disclosed that the cumulative duty paid value of the various intercepted goods amounts to, N3.6bn.

Oladeji said that the unit also recovered the sum of N62m as revenue for June 20024 through documentary checks and the issuance of demand notices on consignments that were found to have paid lesser amounts than the appropriate duties.

He urged Nigerians to provide the service with useful and timely information that would lead to the arrest of illegal importation of military wares, illicit drugs, and counterfeit goods.

“Importers and licensed agents are also urged to make sincere declarations, adhere to existing import and export guidelines, and avoid the risk of losing their goods,” he said.

The House of Representatives has resolved to support the Federal Government with N648 million for six months by slashing their salaries by 50% to support food sufficiency across the country and to address the high cost of food.
While making this resolution on Thursday, the lawmakers also begged Nigerians to exercise more patience with President Ahmed Tinubu’s led administration in addressing challenges and hardships faced by citizens.
The House further mandated its Committee on Appropriation, Humanitarian Affairs, Finance and Budget to ensure compliance.
Thus followed the adoption of a motion moved on the floor of the House by Ibrahim Isiaka, APC– Ogun State, during plenary in Abuja.

Biden cancels $1.2bn more in student debt as vote nears

US President Joe Biden said Thursday he was extending his student loan forgiveness program by cancelling the loans of an additional 35,000 Americans as he seeks reelection.

The latest move — amounting to $1.2 billion in student debt — brings to 4.76 million the number of people “who benefitted from our various debt relief actions”, he said in a statement.

The borrowers, who will get an average of $35,000 in debt cancellation, include teachers, nurses, police officials and first responders.

The announcement came on the final day of the Republican National Convention in Milwaukee, where Donald Trump will accept the Republican nomination for the November election.

Biden vowed Thursday to “never stop working to make higher education affordable –- no matter how many times Republican elected officials try to stop us.”

Earlier this year Biden unveiled fresh plans to reduce student loan debt for tens of millions of Americans, in his bid to win over young voters.

That was after the conservative-dominated US Supreme Court last year struck down the Democrat’s earlier proposals to cancel several hundred billion dollars of debt.

Last month he cancelled debt owed by 160,000 people, while earlier in the year he announced student debt relief for 150,000 others.

Stakeholders in the education sector have set the minimum benchmark score for admission into universities at 140. This decision was made during the ongoing policy meeting held on Thursday in Abuja.
The Registrar of the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB), Prof. Ishaq Oloyede, clarified that the benchmark score is not a uniform cut-off mark for all universities. Instead, it represents the lowest score that any university can consider for admissions.
“JAMB does not set cut-off marks. What we have is a minimum benchmark score that any university cannot go below. Different universities have their benchmark scores,” Oloyede stated.
TVN gathered that various institutions had submitted their minimum benchmark scores to JAMB.
Among these, Pan-Atlantic University in Lagos, Covenant University in Ogun State, Obafemi Awolowo University in Osun State, and the University of Lagos were the only universities that recommended a minimum score of 200 and above.
Oloyede also cautioned Nigerians against misinformation regarding JAMB’s role in setting cut-off marks, stating the distinction between the minimum benchmark and individual university cut-off marks.

Nigeria not merit driven, says Uzodimma

The Imo State Governor, Hope Uzodimma, has said Nigeria is not merit-driven, adding that the Nigerian system must find a way to celebrate and promote merit.

“I believe there must be a way to drive and balance this. We need to create a space where everyone can thrive which promotes merit,” the governor said on Thursday while delivering a lecture on patriotism and citizenship at the Yoruba Tennis Club event in Lagos State.

The governor also explained why Nigeria is battling declining patriotism among her citizens, saying the stakeholders must right the wrongs to elicit the spirit of patriotism among the populace.

He said the mistrust and several heartbreaks the citizens have suffered were responsible for declining patriotism in the country.

The governor maintained the wave of ‘japa syndrome’ was informed by Nigerians’ quest to have a better life and live where the system works.

He said purposeful leadership and accountability must be entrenched by leaders across the country to build trust among Nigerians, adding that this would ensure Nigeria remains a country where patriotism can thrive.

According to him, national unity and inclusivity are paramount in eliciting patriotism among Nigerians.

“We must strengthen our national symbol and tradition. Reviving patriotism is a task for all of us. We must all work together to foster and rekindle the flames of patriotism in our country by promoting unity…,” Uzodimma said.

Tragic fire claims seven lives in Nice, France

Seven people lost their lives in Thursday in an early Thursday morning fire at an apartment building in the southern French city of Nice.
Authorities are investigating the blaze, which may have been deliberately set.
Among the victims were three children aged 5, 7, and 10, along with a 17-year-old who tried to escape by jumping from a window, according to officials.
The apartment, located in a neighborhood known for drug activity, was home to a family believed to be of Comoran descent, said regional prefect Hugues Moutouh.

Emergency responders were alerted to the fire around 2:30 am local time on the building’s seventh floor in the Les Moulins area.
Despite efforts from 25 fire engines and 72 firefighters, seven people perished in the blaze, with three others hospitalized, one in critical condition.
Interior Minister Gerald Darmanin credited the swift response of firefighters with preventing further casualties, while Nice prosecutor Damien Martinelli indicated the fire is being treated as a criminal act.
The fire is believed to have started on the building’s second floor before spreading to higher levels, prompting the evacuation of 20 people to temporary accommodations.
Mayor Christian Estrosi announced the establishment of a crisis unit to aid those affected by the tragedy.

Bayelsa State Governor, Douye Diri, has expressed delight over the appointment of seasoned administrator, Dame Didi Esther Walson-Jack, as Head of the Civil Service of the Federation by President Bola Tinubu.
Gov Diri said the news of her appointment on Wednesday was heartwarming, well received and has brought joy to the people of Bayelsa State and the Ijaw nation in general.
In a statement, issued to TVN, through the Chief Press Secretary to Governor, Daniel Alabrah, Diri while congratulating the new appointee, described Didi Walson-Jack as a distinguished civil servant with an exceptional public service career.
The statement further said, ”Your appointment as the new Head of the Civil Service of the Federation is a significant milestone in your public service career”
“The government and people of Bayelsa State, and, indeed, the Ijaw nation are excited about this notable advancement and achievement of a worthy daughter of our state and the Ijaw nation”

JAMB excludes inmates, albinos, PWDs from Post-UTME

The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board on Thursday announced categories of candidates to be excluded from the post Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination popularly known as Post-UTME.

The Registrar, JAMB, Prof. Ishaq Oloyede, disclosed the set of candidates to be excluded as follows, “Candidates from outside Nigeria who applied through UTME/DE modes are exempted from the Post UTME screening test but can be screened after admission.

“Candidates with disabilities, including but not limited to those who are blind, deaf, mute, autistic, amputees, lame, paralyzed, have Down syndrome, Dyslexia, Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder, albinism, cerebral palsy, and disfigurements, are exempt from the Post-UTME screening test.

“All institutions should clearly disclose this exemption in their advertisements for the Post-UTME screaning test and strictly enforce this policy,” Oloyede said.

Earlier, stakeholders pegged the minimum benchmark scores for admissions into universities as 140; polytechnics and colleges of education at 100 respectively.
