Police arrest five robbers, cultists in Delta

The Delta State Police Command says it has arrested suspected armed robbers, and cultists in Oghara, Ethiope East Local Government Area of Delta State, and recovered AK-47 magazine.

The Command’s Spokesperson, SP Bright Edafe, stated this in a statement on Monday in Asaba

He said, “Sequel to series of cult-related activities, kidnapping and armed robbery in Sapele, Oghara, and environs, the Commissioner of Police Delta State, Olufemi Abaniwonda, directed the team on special assignment to work collaboratively with the DPOS Oghara and Sapele Division in order to nip it at the bud.

“On June 18, 2024, in a covert intelligence-led operation by ASP Julius Robinson raided three different syndicates of cultists/suspected armed robbers at various locations in Oghara Town, Ethiope East LGA of Delta State, and arrested five suspects namely Ochuko Joel Ofoye 35, of Jeddo Community in Okpe LGA Delta State, a member of Juris Confraternity and Michael Anwul 29, of Alisimie Community Agbor, in Ika South LGA Delta State of Juris confraternity

“Other suspects include Great Ojareri 35, of Oghareki Community in Ethiope West LGA Oghara Delta State, a member of Eiye Confraternity also a custodian of arms, and Innocent Esefeta aged 31, of Efisere Community in Ughelli North LGA Delta State and Ogaga Ebuke 27, member of Juris Confraternity.”

Edefe said that items including two AK 47 magazines, 29 rounds of live ammunition, a locally made pistol with one live cartridge concealed in a shoe were recovered

He said the suspects were in custody and an investigation was ongoing.

Economic hardship: Protest can’t solve Nigeria’s problems – Ogun chiefs

The Ogun State Council of Chiefs has urged Nigerians to prioritize dialogue and engagement as a means of addressing the country’s economic challenges rather than resorting to the planned 10-day protest.
The Council maintained that protest cannot solve the current economic crisis, noting that, rather, it can result in the destruction of lives, properties and government infrastructure.
The Oluwo Ijemo and Aro of Egba, Chief Oluyinka Kufile who spoke on Monday during a press conference heralding the 2024 Ijemo Day celebration, stated that once these vital elements are damaged, it may become challenging to create new development initiatives.
Kufile stated that the celebration slated for August 3rd to 10th is to celebrate the 110th Ijemo Massacre, history and culture.
The high chief while recounting the 1914 Ijemo massacre warned that engaging in violent protests tends to cause more harm than to offer solutions.
Kufile stressed that Nigerians must find a way to provide for themselves and reduce the tension and hunger in the country without solely depending on the government.
He said, “What happen then in our own time was because someone was arrested and died while in detention.
“Now as at that time whether everybody likes it or not people will die and people will live. But in an environment where there’s an issue the only solution is amicable resolution.
“If we have some buildings and there is no money to renovate them then, some people will now say they want to protest and burn things down. Where are we going to get money to build another one? it is important that we have to dialogue.”
The Council of Chiefs maintained that while the country might be facing challenges with the development of new infrastructures destroying existing once would only cause more harm than good.
“It is getting difficult for development now, money is no longer the issues that we use to have, creating houses, great infrastructure are very difficult to put together now. We have money in existence but the value is limited.
“So whatever we have or that our forefathers have built either the federal, state or local government level let us strive to make sure that we sustain and maintain them. Damaging what we have been able to put together cannot solve any problem.”

‘#EndBadGovernance protest will lead to anarchy in Nigeria,’ Gumi warns

Popular Islamic cleric, Sheikh Ahmad Gumi, has called on organizers of the planned EndBadGovernanceInNigeria protest scheduled to commence on August 1 to shelve the idea because it could lead to anarchy.
The Kaduna-based cleric made the plea in a statement on his Facebook page on Sunday.
He said though corruption is wrecking Nigeria and hampering the country’s development, the planned nationwide protest should be postponed for fear of widespread anarchy.
Gumi noted that the pervasive corruption in various sectors of Nigerian society, from government institutions to the economy, has taken the country several years back.
But he warned that the timing of the protest could trigger unrest in the country.

He said: “With due apology to the few honest Nigerians, as corruption has permeated the fabric of the society, leaving virtually no institution without blemish, the recent move by the youth to demonstrate against bad governance and poor leadership is a great precursor of a brighter future for this nation.
“At a time, the executives are largely corrupt. So also the legislature, the academia, the judiciary, the armed forces, the labor unions, and even the affluent citizens, all watching as the nation is drifting slowly to hunger and lawlessness, every quarter is after its interest of amassing wealth, the youth suddenly have stood out as the last hope of this nation.
“On this note, I am calling on the youth to postpone their intended protest this August to the first of January next year.
“The reasons are: First and foremost, to give enough time to coordinate their various youth groups for better organization so that whatever demands they want, would be articulated well for the betterment of the nation. It is said if you don’t plan to succeed you are then planning to fail.
“Any premature action by the youth is mostly likely to lead to anarchy and greater turmoil as not every person is on the same page with their noble ambition. And I believe they should not be given a free ride to do so.”

‘We’ve been in darkness’ – Protesters shut down crude oil flow station in Delta

Angry protesters on Monday shutdown the flow-station in Jones Creek, an oil facility operated by the Management of NPDC/NECONDE OML 42 JV, after chasing workers away.
The protesters who are from Egwa, Odidi, Bayan and Okerenkoko communities in Warri-West, said they have been in darkness since December 2023.
They demanded that the oil firm must connect them to the gas turbine serving their yard for them to have light. They issued a three months ultimatum to the company to act on the demand.
The protesters, who are mainly women, chanted solidarity songs as they danced into the premises of the firm.
They carried placards with inscriptions such as,”NECONDE/NPDC No light, No Operation. Give us light”,” Okerenkoko Community is tired of darkness. Give us light. NECONDE/NPDC”,”Let there be light in Okerenkoko” and “Enough is enough of darkness”.
Leader of the protest, Esther Ene, in a chat with newsmen said the protesters will remain at the flow-station until their calls are heeded to by the oil firm.
“It’s light issue that brought us here. As we are here, if darkness is sweet, they should shutdown the flow-station so that we will stay in darkness with them,” she said.
Claiming that the community is the highest oil producer in the Niger Delta, Ene said, “We are not supposed to be in darkness.
“Anybody they will call from above, we are ready to stay with that person. If it’s Tinubu that comes here, we will stay with him here. They should find a way. The highest we are giving them is three months, we should have light day and night. They should fix the turbine for us so that we will have light.”
She said if the company fails to heed to their demand, they will shut down more of its flow-stations in the area.
One of the protesters, Akpoaboere HelpMe, who also spoke with newsmen, said, “We’re suffering. We don’t have drinking water. Only if rain falls before we can get water to drink.
“The situation has affected the Nigeria Maritime University, NMU. Students now go about in search of where to charge their mobile phones. Students can no longer study as many are leaving the town already.
“We are suffering again because there’s no network from telecommunication providers. NPDC/NECONDE OML 42 JV have refused to give us light. Please, give us light within the next three days or we shut you down completely.”

CPPE urges CBN to suspend increase in interest rate

Ahead of Tuesday’s Monetary Policy Committee (MPC) meeting of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), the Centre for the Promotion of Private Enterprise (CPPE) has asked the apex bank to suspend the planned increase in banks’ interest rate.
The Chief Executive Officer of the think-tank, Dr. Muda Yusuf, the call in an interview with journalists on Sunday in Lagos.
He urged the MPC to keep the increase minimal if there must be an increase at all.
The CBN had recently embarked on interest rate increase to tame inflation and stabilise the foreign exchange market.

However, this has not worked out with the inflation rising to 34.19% while the forex market has witnessed significant volatility to reach almost N1,600/$ on the official market.
The consistent increase in interest rates has been condemned by members of the business community citing increases in the cost of accessing capital, among others.
Yusuf said: “Knowing the disposition of the Central Bank of Nigeria, given the fact that the bank has repeatedly affirmed its commitment to tame inflation, there is a very high probability that the MPC is likely to hike interest rates, although it may be marginal.”
“My wish is that the Central Bank should put a hold on interest rate hikes for now. I believe that monetary policy instruments have been practically over-stretched in this quest to tame inflation.”

Northern group withdraws from planned nationwide protest

The Northern Ethnic Youth Group Assembly, NEYGA, says it has withdrawn from the planned August 1 nationwide protest over the state of the nation.
The group instead called on Nigerian youths and student bodies to give President Bola Tinubu more time to implement his economic reforms.
NEYGA, comprising minority tribes in Northern Nigeria, admitted that the current challenges facing the country were a legacy of former the President Muhammadu Buhari administration.
Noting that it didn’t protest against Buhari’s government, the group said it has realized that protesting now may jeopardize national unity.
It stated that Nigeria has faced difficult times, periods of unrest, and moments that tested its resilience.
In a statement by the spokesperson of NEYGA, Ibrahim Dan-Musa, on Sunday, the group urged Nigerians to give Tinubu a chance, noting that his reforms were taking shape, paving the way for a better future.
“We appeal to other Arewa groups to acknowledge that Nigeria’s challenges are a shared responsibility.
“President Tinubu needs more time to implement his plans for the country. The ongoing reforms offer hope for a better future,” Dan-Musa said.
According to him, the Tinubu-led presidency presents a fresh opportunity for transformation.

August 1: Anyone kicking against protest is your enemy – Workers tell Nigerians

Nigerian workers under the aegis of All Workers Convergence (AWC) have declared that anyone who is kicking against the planned protest against hunger in the country is an enemy of the people.
AWC made this declaration via a statement signed by its National Coordinator, Comrade Andrew Emelieze and made available to TVN on Monday.
TVN reports that a planned protest across the country has been fixed to start on 1st August.
Some individuals and groups have been kicking against the planned protest.
The AWC, in its reaction, described protest against bad governance, hunger and insecurity as a legitimate right of the people.
The workers’ group maintained that anyone who is kicking against the planned protest is an enemy of the people.
According to the group, the protest became necessary in view of the challenges Nigerians are currently passing through at this period.
It noted that the protest is a revolt against hunger and a rebellion against hardship.
The statement read, “We have been calling for protest and we shall continue to call for protest until the system works for the public good. We are in full support of calls by Nigerians for massive protest inorder to end hunger, hardship and bad governance in Nigeria.
“In a situation like ours in Nigeria, protest becomes a collective duty. It is however, antisocial not to participate in protest.
“Our people have lost hope in the system. All our able-bodied citizens are either leaving or planning to leave the country. Our people are being daily strangled by bad governance. Our government keep telling us the same old story.
“While the mass majority of our people pass through hardship, our rulers and a very few are immersed in unimaginable wealth and wastage of national resources.
“We will not sit down and continue to see things get worse by the day. Our leaders have been making mockery of governance and certainly we cannot continue like this.
“Governance under Tinubu has brought untold hardship to our people. Everything is now upside down. It appears governance under President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has collapsed.
“We the Nigerian workers support the call for national protest against hunger and bad governance. Protest everywhere is a fundamental human rights. Protest everywhere is lawful. Protest is not a crime. Protest is a duty of all citizens. We shall protest, no going back. We salute the courage of our people as we all continue to mobilise for actions towards the the day.
“This protest is a revolt against hunger and a rebellion against hardship. Our people are only trying to resist deprivation. This is a revolution towards the genuine transformation of Nigeria.
“Our people have suffered enough. Our people have made up their minds to arrest the situation. We are going ahead with the planned protest.
“Anybody against this call for protest is an enemy of the people. It is time to emancipate Nigeria from corruption, bad governance and exploitation. We call for synergy among all the organisers of this protest. We shall overcome. No retreat no surrender.”

Peter Obi demands urgent action to prevent further collapse of Nigeria’s economy

The Labour Party presidential candidate in the 2023 election, Peter Obi, on Monday called for urgent action to prevent further collapse of the country’s country.
He was reacting to the latest rise in Nigeria’s headline inflation rate to 34.19 percent.
In a series of tweets on his official X platform, the former Anambra State governor expressed deep concern over the country’s economic trajectory since 2015.
He underlined the contrast between Nigeria’s economic performance in the early years of its return to democracy and its current state.
Obi wrote: “When Nigeria returned to democratic governance in 1999, it maintained an average GDP growth of about 6.72% for 16 years from 1999-2014.”
However, he pointed out that this growth was not sustained with Gross Domestic Product (GDP) growth collapsing to 2.79% in 2015 and the economy slipping into recession in 2016.
He added: “In 2014, just before the inception of a new administration a year later, Nigeria had the biggest economy in Africa with a Gross Domestic Product of $568.5 billion and a GDP Per Capita of about $3,200.”

In contrast, he noted that by 2023, Nigeria had fallen to the 4th largest economy in Africa, with a GDP of $375 billion and a per capita of $1700.
Accordingly, the situation worsened in 2024, with the GDP further declining to an estimated $253 billion and per capita dropping to $1087.
This is according to data obtained from StatiSense, an AI data company specialising in financial report analysis, bank statement evaluation, and AI chatbot services.
Subsequently, the former governor raised alarm at the current state of affairs, saying, “Today, poverty is pervasive and on the increase. Unemployment is rising. Food inflation has skyrocketed to over 43%. Foreign and local investors are losing faith in the future growth of our economy and are leaving in large numbers. Businesses are shutting down.”
He then called for urgent action to prevent further economic collapse and move it from consumption to production.
“Urgent actions need to be taken to salvage the nation from further economic collapse and move it from consumption to production.
“However, instead of concerning ourselves with all these challenges threatening our collective existence and finding ways to recreate an inclusive and sustainable economy, pull millions of people out of poverty, and return our nearly 20 million out-of-school children to schools, our leaders are more concerned with funding their selfish luxuries and individual lavishness while throwing blames at others who are only committed to solving the nation’s problems.
“In the face of all these challenges, we the leaders should commit to inclusive and sustainable growth to end the hardship which has continued to burden our fellow Nigerians. Only through that can we achieve a peaceful and secure society, ‘” he noted.

Food security: Yobe gov warns against sabotage

Yobe State Governor, Mai Mala Buni has said his government will deal decisively with saboteurs whose intent is to frustrate commitments towards food sufficiency and food security in the state.
The governor handed down the warning during the launching of an agricultural empowerment scheme.
More than ₦19 billion was expended to procure farming inputs with about six thousand beneficiaries being targeted in the 178 political wards across the 17 council areas of the state.
Items distributed include: 100 Zoom Lion Tractors; 10 IMC Double Cabin 4 wheel drive vehicles for use by extension service workers; 200 motor cycles to extension service workers to boost agricultural extension services; 300 sets of Ox-drawn ploughs and 5,349 small ruminants (goats).
Others are: 1,349 hand push planters; 889 hand-push plough machines; 590 hand-push tiller machines; 4,202 solar-powered irrigation water pumps; improved assorted seeds and 72,000 bags of fertilizer, among others.
Buni stressed that government would deal ruthlessly with any official, individual or group who tests its will by sabotaging its efforts, noting that his administration has instituted some measures to check abuse and sale of the machines by the beneficiaries to avoid sabotaging the lofty goals of the intended agricultural revolution in the state.
“I hereby direct the security agencies to arrest and impound tractors and other machines crossing the border lines of the state, while such saboteurs are made to face the full wrath of the law,” he ordered.
Buni assured that the Agricultural Development Programme would be carefully monitored to ensure efficiency in service, effective maintenance and accountability in proceeds accruing from the hire of the tractors.
“The tractors are to be in custody of the State Agricultural Development Programme at the Headquarters in Damaturu and the zonal offices in Buni Yadi, Geidam, Gashua, Nguru and Potiskum, to be hired out to individuals and group farmers,” he said.

Appeal Court dismisses appeal filed by Danish convicted for killing wife, daughter

The Court of Appeal, Lagos, on Friday, dismissed the appeal filed by a Denmark national, Peter Nielsen, who was condemned to death for killing his Nigerian wife and daughter.
Nielsen was sentenced to death by hanging by the Lagos High Court on May 20, 2022, after he was found guilty of killing his wife Zainab aka Alizee, and their three-year-old daughter, Petra.
Justice Bolanle Okikiolu-Ighile found the 54-year-old guilty on counts one and two of murder preferred against him by the Lagos State government.

Nielsen, who was dissatisfied with his conviction, approached the appellate court to overturn it.
However, in Friday’s proceeding, the appeal court dismissed the appeal court for lack of merit.
The three-member panel held that the respondents (Lagos State government) proved its case against the appellant beyond a reasonable doubt.
