Reps committee order detention of WAEC officials for failing to give satisfactory answers during hearing

The House of Representatives Committee on Basic Examination Bodies on Tuesday, ordered the arrest and detention of four representatives of the West African Examination Council (WAEC) for failing to respond satisfactorily to questions thrown at them during a hearing.
The affected WAEC officials, Amos Josiah Dangut, Head of National Office, WAEC Nigeria, who represented the Registrar; Angus Okeleze, Senior Deputy Registrar; Victor Odu, Acting Director of Finance; Segun Jerumeh, Deputy Director of Finance, were reportedly taken away by members of the Serjeant at Arms for about 15 minutes before being allowed back to the venue of the hearing.
The decision, according to the reports, were ordered detained upon a motion moved by a member of the Committee, Uchenna Okonkwo, during the investigative hearing of the Committee after they failed to answer questions to the satisfaction of the members.
The lawmakers had, during the hearing, engaged in heated arguments with the WAEC officials on whether the examination body was accountable to the National Assembly or not.
During his presentation, Dangut had told the Committee that WAEC was not an agency of government and therefore, not accountable as other agencies.

But the lawmakers insisted that WAEC was a creation of an Act of the National Assembly and must account for all their activities to them, pointing out that the National Assembly makes appropriation for WAEC.
The lawmakers also pointed out that WAEC’s convention dictates that they must submit to the legislation of any of its member countries.
Following the arguments, Okonkwo moved a motion demanding that the officials be put in custody.
“I will like to move a motion that while pending the investigation to look into the activities of WAEC Nigeria, the invited guests should be taken into custody and held at the police post while we seek for solutions for these issues they are bringing upon Nigerians.”
But after a brief closed door session, the Committee resolved to allow them go and come back at a later date with relevant documents demanded of them, with a stern warning that they must bring the audited statement of accounts of the examinations body from 2018 till date.

US military pullout from Niger to be completed in August – Gen Ekman

A General in the United States Army, Kenneth Ekman, on Wednesday, said American troops will be completely pulled out from Niger in August.
Ekman, who heads the US Africa Command Africom, disclosed this while speaking with journalists in Abidjan.
According to the US general: “The withdrawal is going well.
“It is ahead of schedule and this is because of the excellent coordination that we have had with our Nigerien military counterparts.
“I expect that we will be complete with the withdrawal by early August, well ahead of the 15 September mutually agreed deadline.
“The consequences for regional security are very concerning.
“I’ve been here speaking to your military and government leaders — we share the same concerns about the violent extremist threat that is growing and increasingly threatening the countries around the Sahel,” he said.
The US started pulling out its troops from Niger in July but another 200 US soldiers remain at the Agadez drone base in the north of the country.
US troops were part of an international effort to suppress jihadist forces that regularly strike across the region.
But the Niger military leaders who seized power in a coup a year ago in March told US and French forces to quit the country.

Again, Netflix raises subscription in Nigeria to N7,000

Netflix has announced a price adjustment for its subscriptions in Nigeria, with the Premium Plan now set at N7,000 per month, up from N5,000.

This marks the platform’s second price adjustment in three months with the introduction of the most recent price increase in April of this year.

At the time of filing this report, confirmation is pending regarding whether any notifications were issued prior to the subscription price change. However, our correspondent noted that the increased prices are already visible on Netflix’s subscription page.

Nigeria needs more manufacturers than hotels – Customs boss, Ogbonna

The Area Controller of Nigeria Customs Service, NCS, Cross River/Akwa Ibom Command, Chukwudi Gabriel Ogbonna, has stressed that Nigeria requires more manufacturing firms instead of hotels.
He observed that there seems to be more hotels in the country compared with manufacturing facilities.
The Customs boss spoke in Calabar when he received a delegation of Manufacturers Association of Nigeria, MAN, on Wednesday.
He stressed that there is no way a national economy can grow manufacturers.
“The local or national economy cannot survive without manufacturers. Manufacturing or productive economy energizes any economy.
“But there seems to be more hotels than manufacturing concerns in Cross River and many other states. It shouldn’t be that way.
“We ourselves are affected when manufacturers are not working. We take in revenues when manufacturers are working. We should give more support to local manufacturers,” Ogbonna said.
The MAN delegation, led by the acting chairman, Usen Umoh, visited the NCS to express happiness with the existing collaboration, and also chart ways of improving partnership between the two organizations in the two states.
“We manufacturers cannot do without NCS. This is because as we manufacture, we also import and export. Therefore, we must always interface with NCS. Our businesses have a lot to do with Customs.
“We came to solicit greater cooperation between ourselves and the NCS,” Umoh said.

Musk denies backing Trump campaign with $45m a month donations

Elon Musk has denied reports that he was donating $45 million a month to a fund backing former US president Donald Trump’s latest White House bid.

In a Tuesday post on X, Musk called the report he was funding a so-called political Super-PAC “ridiculous.”

Super PACs are specially designed groups that can spend unlimited amounts on political candidates and causes.

“I am making some donations to America PAC, but at a much lower level and the key values of the PAC are supporting a meritocracy & individual freedom.

“Republicans are mostly, but not entirely, on the side of merit & freedom,” he added.

Musk’s comments came days after the democratic campaign for the presidential election was re-invigorated with Vice President Kamala Harris stepping in for Joe Biden.

The Wall Street Journal had reported that Musk plans to donate $45 million monthly to America PAC, even though Musk stated just months ago that he would not donate to either Trump or President Joe Biden.

The Tesla founder formally endorsed Trump’s candidacy for US president earlier this month immediately after the Republican survived a shooting at a political rally in Butler, Pennsylvania.

Musk is one of several major backers of the new fund, with others reportedly including Palantir co-founder Joe Lonsdale, former US ambassador to Canada Kelly Craft and cryptocurrency investors Tyler and Cameron Winklevoss.

Dialogue with protest organisers, Reps urge FG

The minority caucus of the House of Representatives, on Wednesday, advised the Federal Government to interface with intending protesters in a bid to find a lasting solution to the issues raised by the latter.

The caucus made the demand as part of its resolution at the end of its special meeting/dinner in Abuja on Monday night.

A statement issued on Wednesday by the media team of the caucus quoted the Chairman, Kingsley Chinda, as urging those behind the planned protest to shelve the idea, citing the worrisome security situation in the country.

“We appeal to the government to dialogue with the planned protesters and also look at some of the messages they are raising, the critical areas that need government intervention. The government should intervene and ensure that issues are resolved amicably.

“We are not going to encourage any protesters because in the past, we observed in most cases that even peaceful protests have been overtaken by hoodlums, and with the insecurity situation in some parts of the country, you may not have the control of the gathering of people. So some unscrupulous people may use the opportunity to create chaos,” he said.

He also called on the Federal Government government to adopt a non-kinetic approach to tackling the security challenges in the country.

“We acknowledge and observe the insecurity situation in the country and we call on the government to use carrot and stick by ensuring that the result is seen. Let all the security chiefs do what is right to ensure that Nigerians are protected,” he added.

The caucus also called on the government to create means to ensure citizens are self-reliant in a bid to tackle the economic challenges in the country.

“We also acknowledged in our discussion that there is hunger in the land and we appeal to the government not only to be giving palliatives but to create ways and means whereby people can be self-reliant,” he said.

He said the dinner was organised to thank members of the caucus for their support.

“Basically the main purpose of our gathering was just to have an end-of-year dinner. We felt it is important to organise a dinner and thank all our members for giving us the necessary support,” he added.

Economic hardship: Nigerian Govt reduces allowances of foreign scholars

The Nigerian Government has reduced the allowances of foreign scholars who are studying under the Bilateral Educational Agreement, BEA, Scholarship by 12.7 per cent.
The scholars are currently stranded in Russia, Morocco, and Algeria, among other countries.
The reduction of the allowances was announced in a memo issued by the Nigerian Government.
In the memo signed by the Director of the Federal Scholarship Board, Ndajiwo H.A, on behalf of the Minister of Education, Tahir Mamman, the Federal Government explained that the balance owed to the students would be paid whenever money is available.
The government attributed the development to the current economic crunch in the country.
Recently, Nigerian students studying in Russia, Morocco, Algeria, China, Hungary, and other countries, on Federal Government scholarship, had lamented their unpaid stipends for eight months running.
The BEA scholarship is an education exchange program between Nigeria and the partnering countries. The Federal Scholarship Board supervises the scholarship under the Federal Ministry of Education.
The memo said: “After due consultations, the Federal Scholarship Board has come up with adjustments in line with budgetary provisions in the payment of BEA scholar’s supplementation allowances for the 2024 academic year.”
The memo said that the monthly allowances were slashed from $500 to $220; the graduation allowance from $2,500 to $2,000; and the Post-Graduate research allowance from $1,000 to $500.
The total amount initially payable to each student was $5,650, but it will now be $4,370 per scholar.
“The scholars’ association is hereby notified that due to the prevailing economic situation, the payment mandate for the BEA scholars’ allowances will be as per the new adjustment.
“The balances for the years 2023 and 2024 owed to scholars will be paid as soon as the funds are made available,” the government stated.

Nigerian Law Society gets interim national executive committee

The Nigerian Law Society (NLS) has constituted an Interim National Executive Committee.
The Chairman of the NLS Board of Trustees, Chief Bolaji Ayorinde, SAN, announced the appointment of members of the Interim National Executive Committee in a statement released on Wednesday.
The statement, signed by Dr Tonye Clinton Jaja, Executive Director of the NLS, said the appointees would serve for a period of one year, effective from Thursday, 1st August, 2024, to Thursday, 31st July, 2025.
Members of the committee, according to the statement, are Chief Mela Audu Nunghe, SAN, President, Hon. Nimi Walson-Jackiii, Vice President South, Mallam Abdulqadir Alhaji Sani, Vice President North, Mr. Steve Abar, General Secretary, Madam Alice Ogaku Awonugba, Assistant General Secretary, Madam Zara Umar Yakub, Financial Secretary, Madam Chioma Ferguson, Treasurer, Mr. Stephen Uchenna Nwankwo (Steve Sun), Publicity Secretary, and Mr. Oluniyi Adediji, Welfare Secretary.
