Murray withdraws from Olympics tennis singles

0

Andy Murray has withdrawn from the tennis singles at the Paris Olympics but will still take part in the doubles, the two-time gold medallist said on Thursday.

The British former world number one, who will retire at the end of his fifth Games, has still not fully recovered from back surgery he had last month.

He believes the men’s doubles, where he is playing with Dan Evans, offers his best chance of another medal.

“I’ve taken the decision to withdraw from the singles to concentrate on the doubles with Dan,” said the 37-year-old.

“Our practice has been great and we’re playing well together. Really looking forward to getting started and representing GB one more time.”

Murray won gold in singles in London in 2012 and in Rio four years later, as well as silver in mixed doubles with Laura Robson in 2012.

His withdrawal means his final singles match was his brief second-round appearance at Queen’s Club against Jordan Thompson last month before he was forced to pull out because of a spinal cyst.

Nigerian military cautions against nationwide protest, cites Kenya unrest

0

The Defence Headquarters has issued a stern warning against the proposed nationwide protest, drawing parallels to recent unrest in Kenya.
Maj Gen Edward Buba, Director of Defence Media Operations, addressed journalists in Abuja on Thursday, expressing concerns over potential violence orchestrated by infiltrators.
“The aim of the protest is to replicate what is happening in Kenya,” Maj Gen Buba stated. “And I would add that what is happening in Kenya in terms of the protest, one, is violence. Two, it remains unresolved as we speak now.”

He continued, emphasizing intelligence reports suggesting that certain elements planned to hijack the peaceful demonstrations, potentially leading to widespread disorder.
“Based on what has been gathered, there are plans by some unscrupulous elements to hijack this protest and ensure that it turns violent,” he explained.
The military official urged caution among the public, highlighting the risks associated with such demonstrations. “When it turns violent, I want to tell you what we have seen as it would likely happen,” he warned. “Indeed, we need to count our blessings.”
The proposed protest has stirred controversy across the country, with organizers asserting their rights to peaceful assembly while critics argue that security risks could escalate amid ongoing tensions.

Putin vows ‘retribution’ against those trying to ‘divide’ Russia

0

Russian President Vladimir Putin vowed Thursday to crush anybody who tries to divide Russian society as he hailed the effectiveness and unwavering loyalty of his country’s powerful law enforcement agencies.

Putin has escalated a decades-long crackdown on civil society, independent media and opposition amid his military offensive in Ukraine, with dissent and criticism of the Kremlin outlawed and punishable by years-long prison sentences.

“Those who try to intimidate people, to split our society, to play on religious or national feelings will never succeed,” Putin said in a video message posted by the Kremlin.

“Inevitable and just retribution awaits them,” he added.

Russia regularly uses such language to describe those who oppose the Kremlin, including domestic critics who Moscow paints as being Western spies or puppets.

Putin was marking Russia’s “Investigation Officers’ Day” and paid tribute to various Russian law enforcement agencies, including the Investigative Committee and the FSB security services, the successor to the Soviet-era KGB.

“Investigators show unconditional loyalty to the Fatherland and our people,” Putin said.

Critics of the Kremlin say Russia’s focus on investigating and prosecuting its domestic political opponents and rivals have left it blind to genuine security threats.

In March, armed gunmen killed more than 140 at a Moscow concert hall in the country’s most deadly terror attack in almost two decades.

The incident came just days after warnings from Western intelligence agencies that Putin publicly rejected as “blackmail” and an attempt to “destabilise our society”.

The Islamic State group claimed responsibility, but Putin and other officials tried to link the massacre to Ukraine, without providing any evidence.

Almost all of Putin’s main opponents are in jail or have fled into exile.

Having stamped out dissent and passed strict military censorship laws that make criticism of the military illegal, Putin has repeatedly claimed Russian society is united behind his offensive on Ukraine.

August 1: Afenifere declares stance on planned nationwide protest

0

or there…
The pan-Yoruba socio-cultural organization, Afenifere, on Thursday declared its support for the planned August 1 nationwide protest against President Bola Tinubu.
Afenifere’s Publicity Secretary, Justice Faloye, however, said the body would not be part of the protest.
Speaking on Arise Television’s Morning Show, Faloye warned against violence during the nationwide protest.
According to Faloye: “Afenifere is not planning to be part of the protest but we support the fundamental human rights of Nigerians, however, we have been warning against the hardship. You can’t tell a hungry man not to wait.
“Afenifere has been saying we need economic and political restructuring of this country; but all we have is palliative, which are superficial moves.
“We acknowledge their rights, we saw this, but you, the government, don’t want to take responsibility for your economic policies. Tinubu imposed the 10 days of rage on himself due to his policies. It’s not that we support the protest, but we understand that it’s an organic reaction.
“We support anybody who wants to support the protest against government policies, which we understand are anti-people.
“We don’t support violence but peaceful protest to voice your concerns, in most cases; it’s not the people that are the problem but the government and the political thugs that are the issue. We support the protest.”

‘It is satanic’, MURIC calls for ban of movie with Nancy Isime in Niqab

0

The Muslim Rights Concern has called for the ban of the yet-to-be-released movie where popular actress Nancy Isime and other actresses wore purdah, an Islamic full covering popularly called the Niqab, and brandished dangerous weapons.

The group described the movie as ‘satanic’, adding that it depicts Muslim women as criminals and incites the public against them.

The call was made in a statement signed by the Executive Director, MURIC, Professor Ishaq Akintola, on Thursday.

The statement read, “An extremely anti-Muslim film has been released into the Nigerian movie industry. The upcoming film, which was recently unveiled by Nancy Isime, shows women in purdah brandishing dangerous weapons and robbing banks. It is Islamophobia taken to the highest level. This film is satanic, repugnant, and provocative.

“It is aimed at portraying Muslim women as criminals with a violent proclivity. The film is capable of inciting the public against Muslim women. It may also expose Muslims in general to public ridicule and opprobrium.

“We believe that the film is the handiwork of Muslim-haters and part of the plot to stop Muslim women from wearing hijab and niqab. The plot was hatched a long time ago, and its execution began in the schools. This plot was boldly and diligently confronted in Nigerian courts by Muslims until the highest court in the land made a pronouncement on it. This Satanic film is the latest effort in the war against hijab.

Akintola maintained that the film is capable of setting Nigeria on fire if urgent action is not taken by the relevant authorities while urging the National Film and Video Censors Board to investigate and place an immediate ban on the coming film.

“To Nigerian Muslims who have inundated our communication channels with video clips, voice notes, and other types of messages, we have this to say: please remain calm and peaceful. You have spoken loud and clear.

“We have received your messages and action is being taken right now. Our religion brought a message of hope and peace to the world. We will not allow anyone to paint our women, our mothers, our wives, our daughters and sisters in the colours of Shaytan. Be good ambassadors of Islam. Don’t take the law into your hands. Allow the authorities to take necessary action,” he added.

Recall that Isime had sparked outrage among the Muslim community in the country after unveiling a movie poster that features women wearing hijab and face veils holding guns in a bank robbery scene.

They have threatened to file a complaint with Meta, the parent company of Facebook and Instagram, seeking action against the account responsible for sharing what they described as “Islamophobic content”.

Reacting, one Latifat Adewunmi Jumah, with a Facebook page named Laj Fingers, expressed her dissatisfaction over the offensive posts, saying, “The niqab/hijab is not an armed robbery attire! The niqab/hijab is not an attire for concealing identity.

She queried the actress, saying, “If you needed to conceal your identity for a perfect robbery role, you could have used a nose mask or worn a mask. Why wear Islamic attire?”

“I find this offensive. Something needs to be done to stop this people. Niqab/Hijab is not a costume, neither is it a joke,” she added.

Another Facebook user, who identified as Alfa Shehu, commented, “And one of our brothers from Ilorin is kuku in the movie with them. Hypocrites! It is these same people who will turn around tomorrow and say women in Niqab are doing this and doing that. Awon alarun opolo gbogbo. Anything for clouts and monetisation.”

You’re worse than Lai Mohammed, Netizens tackle VP Shettima over claims FG created one million jobs in one year

Social media users have been up in arms tackling Vice President Kashim Shettima over his claims that the Federal Government has generated over 300,000 businesses through various Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs) interventions and created over one million jobs primarily for youth and women, within a year.
Shettima who made the claims during a one-day working visit to Jigawa State on Wednesday, said the President Bola Tinubu administration was determined to create more opportunities for Nigerians with similar interventions.
“President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has initiated multiple interventions for SMEs, which have generated over 300,000 businesses and will provide over one million jobs within a year,” Shettima was quoted as saying.
But the statement from the Vice President has raised dust among social media users who have asked the VP to mentioned some of the businesses and jobs the government has created.
Some X users also accused the VP of lying even more than former Information Minister, Lai Mohammed whom many believed employed lies and propaganda to a great extent during the administration of ex-President Muhammadu Buhari.

Alia seeks CBN support to develop Benue’s agric, mining sectors

0

Benue State Governor, Rev FrHyacinth Alia, has solicited the support of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) in streamlining the state’s economy to foster economic growth, employment, and the development of vital infrastructure and technology.
Governor Alia made this appeal during a courtesy visit to the Governor of the CBN, Mr Olayemi Cardoso, in Abuja.
This was contained in a statement on Thursday by the Principal Special Assistant to the Governor on Media, Publicity, and Communications Strategy, Ms Bridget Tikyaa.
He stated that Benue has vast opportunities in agriculture, solid minerals, and other areas which the state wants the CBN to support in fully harnessing for local and international markets.
Governor Alia also urged the apex bank to provide its expertise in developing appropriate data in all key areas of development for proper planning and strategic engagement with investors.
He informed the CBN Governor about the state’s newly created Bureau of Statistics, aimed at enhancing the state’s statistical systems, boosting the economy through job creation and foreign exchange activities, and supporting the agricultural sector.
Governor Alia further said, “We seek your support in providing system strengthening and equipment infrastructure for the Benue State Bureau of Statistics. This support will not only benefit the Benue State Government but will also enhance the capabilities of the CBN and Nigeria at large. A well-supported statistical system ensures we have reliable data to guide our economic policies and development strategies.”
In his remarks, the Governor of the CBN, Mr Cardoso, commended Governor Alia for the visit and thanked him for the initiatives aimed at diversifying the economy.
“The Central Bank of Nigeria will take necessary measures to bring the nation’s rising inflation under control. While monetary policy has been moderating aggregate demand, rising food and energy costs continue to exert upward pressure on price development,” he said.

Tinubu failing Nigerians – Afenifere on economy, Dangote’s refinery

0

The Afenifere sociocultural organization on Thursday accused President Bola Tinubu’s presidency of failing Nigerians.
Afenifere accused Tinubu of being superficial and refusing to restructure Nigeria’s economy.
Featuring on Arise Television’s Morning Show, Afenifere’s Publicity Secretary, Justice Faloye, faulted how Tinubu removed fuel subsidy.
According to Faloye: “When he said subsidies were dead, we said there is nowhere in the world that you won’t have this kind of situation, it’s not protesters that are endangering the polity, but it’s the government’s policies. Anywhere in the world, you can’t remove subsidies like that.
“We do believe that the presidency is failing the people, he (Tinubu) is being superficial, he should restructure the economy. What we have is a colonial economy because the majority are just trading.”
Commenting on the saga between the federal government and Dangote’s refinery, Faloye said the government should be more nationalistic in its approach.
“On the issue of Dangote, the government needs to be more nationalistic, we have wished for such a refinery for so long; so, it’s so depressing that the NNDPRA comes out to denigrate our products.
“What we need is for the government to support this business, government should back people when they invest and not throw hurdles in the way,” he added.
