No place like home, Tinubu tells Nigerians abroad

President Bola Tinubu has urged Nigerians living abroad to remember that there is no place like home.

He recalled that he once lived and worked abroad but returned home to contribute to the nation’s development.

The president, represented by the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, George Akume, spoke at the 2024 National Diaspora Day Celebrations in Abuja on Thursday.

Tinubu said he expects those abroad to bring back their experiences to support his development agenda.

He said, “As someone who once lived and worked abroad, I can attest that migration can be transformative and serious. In the 1970s, I went to the United States, where I studied and worked, before returning to Nigeria to contribute to nation-building.

“I, therefore, urge our citizens who relocate abroad to remember that there is no place like home. We expect them to bring back their experiences to support our development agenda.”

Tinubu stated that although the migration of citizens abroad has its consequences, the government would not hold it against them for seeking better opportunities elsewhere.
The president, however, urged them not to forget their country.

Tinubu said, “As we celebrate our diaspora community, we must acknowledge the implication of this phenomenon for our collective growth. We cannot begrudge our citizens who are seeking better opportunities abroad, but we must urge them not to forget their homeland.”

Tinubu disclosed that a total of $646 million was received in diaspora remittances between January and May 2024.
He said, “The CBN has recently introduced some reforms in the sector, and the reforms are yielding fast results. In January, remittances totalled $138.56 million. We recorded $39 million in February, $104 million in March, $193 million in April, and $365 million in May 2024.

“The progression reflects the level of trust and the positive impacts of the mandatory reforms implemented by the Central Bank.”

Tinubu disclosed that a recent estimate from the Nigeria High Commission in Ottawa, Canada, suggests that around 200,000 to 250,000 Nigerians live in Canada.

Tinubu added, “Other estimates indicate that between 10 million and 14 million Nigerians are in the diaspora, most living in other African countries.

“The Nigerian Immigration Service’s recent data showed that Nigeria recorded a significant increase in emigration, with 3.7 million citizens leaving the country between 2022 and September 2023. However, Nigeria also received 1.3 million immigrants during the same period, making us the 46th country with the most immigrants globally.”

Ekiti elders beg govt, police to rescue kidnapped EKSU ex-DVC

The President of Ekiti Council of Elders, Prof. Joseph Oluwasanmi, on Thursday, appealed to Ekiti State Government and security agencies to secure the release of kidnapped member and former Deputy Vice Chancellor of Ekiti State University, Prof. Olorunfemi Olaofe, from captivity.

Oluwasanmi spoke in Ado Ekiti at a press conference addressed by the Council to appeal for intensified efforts to ensure the release of the retired university teacher, who was kidnapped from his residence in Ado Ekiti, the Ekiti State capital, alongside his security guard on July 9, 2024.

Family sources had said the kidnappers contacted and initially demanded N50m which they later reduced before the victim could be set free.

The Elders Council President said, “Our esteemed member, Prof Olaofe, was brazenly kidnapped from his residence on Tuesday, July 9, and remains in captivity as of this moment, 25th July. This has left us deeply anxious and fearful.

“We are on our bended knees for any method that can be used to find the Professor who has given his all to our society. We do not presume to know more than the security experts, but time is of the essence for us to find the elderly man alive, hence our anxiety.

“While we appreciate the efforts of the state government and the security operatives, we implore all stakeholders to unite to ensure the safe release of the Professor and to eradicate insecurity in the state.”

Oluwasanmi, who said this was the second time its members had been kidnapped, lamented that such could discourage the senior citizens from the services and help they were still rendering to society in old age

He disclosed that the Elders’ Council, owing to the continuous stay of its member in the kidnappers’ den, had suspended indefinitely its activities which he said included care for people, saying, “It is a pity for the elders, it is a pity for the neighbours who could have benefitted”.

Similarly, the Nigeria Universities Pensioners Association, EKSU Chapter, in a statement on Thursday, appealed to security agents, particularly the police in Ekiti State and the state governor, Biodun Oyebanji, “to put all machinery in use in securing the release of the former DVC”.

EKSU NUPA, in the statement signed by the Publicity Secretary, Ajibade Olubunmi, stated, “We appeal to security agents particularly the police in Ekiti State to secure the release of our member, Prof. Olaofe, kidnapped over two weeks ago.

“NUPA further calls on the Governor of Ekiti State, Biodun Oyebanji to put all machinery in use in securing the release of the former DVC. We also urge members of the public to join the Association in giving useful that can lead to the rescue of the aged former DVC.”

The Special Adviser to Ekiti State Governor on Security Matters, Brig. Gen. Ebenezer Ogundana (retd), who described the kidnap of the retired professor as unfortunate, said, “Since that incident was reported, all security agencies have been on their toes, looking out, some suspects are being interrogated.

“As we speak, our people are in the forests looking for any trace. It is our hope that this evening, he should come back, and we pray that very soon, he is going to be released,” the security adviser said.

The Commissioner of Police in Ekiti State, Adeniran Akinwale, said that an investigation was in progress on the matter.

The CP, represented by an Assistant Commissioner of Police, Edwin Igoche, said, “Investigation is in progress in respect of the whole thing. We are doing everything humanly possible, by the special grace of God, the professor will return safely”

Lagos, Gombe lead climate governance performance ranking — Report

The 2024 report of the climate governance performance rating and ranking of Nigeria’s 36 states has revealed Lagos, Gombe, and Ebonyi as the top three performing states, with scores of 182, 125, and 123 out of a possible total of 325, respectively.

The report, launched on Thursday in Abuja by the Society for Planet and Prosperity and the Ministry of Environment, also showed that Borno and Ekiti are joint fourth with 115 points each.

The report revealed that Lagos is the only state rated outstanding in performance, while Gombe and Ebonyi are rated as high.

States rated as good performance, which fell within the fourth to 12th positions in the rating, are Borno, Ekiti, Edo, Niger, Abia, Ogun, Kwara, Anambra, Bayelsa, Delta, and Yobe.

Adamawa, Kaduna, Sokoto, Enugu, Taraba, Kogi, Bauchi, and Ondo, occupying the 15th to 22nd positions, in that order, are rated as average in the ranking performance.
States with low scores are positioned within the 23rd to 36th positions. They are Cross-River, Imo, Akwa-Ibom, Katsina, Benue, Plateau, Rivers, Osun, Kebbi, Nasarawa, Jigawa, Oyo, Kano, and Zamfara, in that order, with Zamfara
having the lowest score at 35 points.

The Director of the Society for Planet and Prosperity, Prof. Chukwumerije Okereke, explained that Gombe, Lagos, and Ekiti rank the highest in institutional arrangements and administrative structure for subnational climate leadership.

Okereke noted that Lagos, Borno, and Niger are the top three states in the thematic rating for climate project implementation and monitoring.

“Lagos, Anambra, Edo, Ogun, Taraba, Kaduna, Ondo, Akwa-Ibom, and Katsina have functional websites or links on the state official websites for the Ministry of Environment/Climate Change with several pages showing dynamic web activities.

“To some degree, all states capture climate and climate-related projects in their budgets. However, only 21 states specifically tagged the allotted projects as climate change projects.

“No state has issued a green bond. Only Gombe indicated the issuance of green bonds in its 2024 budget, but this has not been implemented,” he said.

In his keynote address, the Minister of Environment, Balarabe Lawal, said climate governance at the subnational level is essential for several reasons as it is at this level that the impacts of climate change are acutely felt.

Lawal said, “Lands in coastal communities are devastated by erosion while desertification is rampant in the northern region of the country. The subnational governments are often at the forefront of implementing policies and actions that directly affect the lives and livelihoods of the people at the grassroots level; therefore, their role in driving climate action is indispensable.

“The subnational Climate Governance Performance Ranking is more than just a ranking; it is a tool for motivation, collaboration, and accountability. It highlights best practices, identifies areas for improvement, and fosters a spirit of healthy competition among our states and local governments.

“By celebrating the achievements of the top performers and providing support to those lagging, we can collectively elevate our national climate response. The criteria for this ranking are rigorous and comprehensive, reflecting the multifaceted nature of climate governance.

“The process encompasses policy formulation, implementation effectiveness, stakeholders’ engagement, resource allocation, and measurable outcomes. This holistic approach ensures that our assessment is not merely quantitative but also qualitative, capturing the distinction of effective climate governance,” Lawal stated.

On his part, the Minister of State for Environment, Dr Iziaq Salako, noted that the ranking is a milestone in the collective efforts to address the urgent challenges posed by climate change.

Salako said, “As we gather here, we are reminded of the critical role that effective governance plays in mitigating the impacts of climate change and driving sustainable development.

“Nigeria, like many other nations, is experiencing the far-reaching consequences of climate change. From intensified droughts to severe flooding, the impacts are evident across our states, affecting lives, livelihoods, and our natural ecosystems. It is against this backdrop that we must recognise the pivotal role of our subnational governments in climate action.

“Today’s event is therefore to highlight the commitment of our 36 states and the FCT to climate governance and the strides they have made in implementing policies, strategies, and actions to combat climate change. The subnational Climate Governance Performance Ranking serves as a platform to celebrate these successes, identify areas for improvement, and foster healthy competition that drives progress.”

He added that the ranking is a reminder that climate change requires a collaborative and inclusive approach

FG evacuates another batch of 158 irregular Nigerian migrants from Libya

The Federal Government on Wednesday another batch of 158 irregular Nigerian migrants from Libya.
Nigeria’s Charge’d’ Affaires to Libya, Amb. Mohammed Mohammed, made this known in a statement in Tripoli.
He said the returnees comprised 77 men, 45 women, 26 children, and 10 infants.
The envoy revealed that 26 men who were arrested during the ongoing raid of undocumented foreigners in Libya were released from Abu-Salim Detention Centre in Tripoli.
He added that 1, 776 Nigerians stranded in Libya have so far returned home.
Mohammed said that the repatriation was a collaborative effort between the mission and the Libyan authorities.
“This marks the 12th evacuation exercise carried out by the Nigerian Mission in Libya this year.
“The current exercise follows the repatriation of 142 irregular Nigerian migrants from Sabha, Libya, on July 19.
“While some of them were rescued from the Mediterranean Sea by the Libyan Coastal Guards, others were arrested on charges of prostitution, illegal entry, overstay, and lack of proper documentation while others willingly submitted themselves to the IOM in Libya for repatriation.
 
“Nigerians living in Libya, from many indications, already have damaged reputations due to the alleged nefarious activities of some criminal elements among them,” he stated.

Rivers crisis: Coalition begs Tinubu to intervene as supporters of Wike, Fubara clash

A coalition of 100 pro-democracy groups under the auspices of the National Patriotic Coalition, NPC, has called on President Bola Tinubu to urgently intervene in the lingering political crisis in Rivers State.
TVN reports that the face-off between Governor Siminalayi Fubara and his erstwhile godfather, Nyesom Wike, plunged the state into chaos.
Supporters of Wike, the current Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, FCT and loyalists of Governor Fubara have clashed on different occasions.
On Wednesday, a baby was tear-gassed and became unconscious when supporters of the two political gladiators clashed again in the Obio-Akpor Local Government Area of the state.
TVN learnt that the clash occurred during a government medical outreach in the Eliozu community, Obio-Akpor LGA.
Reacting, the coalition, in a statement issued on Thursday by its president, Olusegun Johnson, appealed to the president to intervene in the matter.
Part of the statement reads: “There’s an urgent need for President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to intervene in the political crisis in Rivers State.
“We are aware that the President made a remarkable effort towards resolving the crisis last year by initiating the Rivers Peace Accord, which was later thwarted by Wike and his supporters, who blatantly disregarded the terms and conditions of the peace accord.
“But as the father of the nation, the President must not give up on the peace of any part of the federation.
“Therefore, we appeal to Mr President to once again intervene in the political crisis in Rivers State to prevent a breakdown in law and order.”
The coalition also alleged that some persons are planning to take advantage of the planned nationwide protest against hardship to cause mayhem in the state.

The Minister of State for Environment, Dr Iziaq Salako, said the African continent is more vulnerable to climate change, species loss, and biodiversity destruction than any other continent.

Salako said this on Thursday in Abuja at the validation workshop on the early action support project to implement the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodervisty Framework.

The Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework was adopted during the fifteenth meeting of the Conference of the Parties following a four-year consultation and negotiation process.

The framework supports the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals, builds on the convention’s previous Strategic Plans, and sets out a pathway to reach the global vision of a world living in harmony with nature by 2050.

Eight months ago, the Federal Government kick-started the process with the inception workshop for the Early Action Support Project.

Salako, who approved the validated National Biodiversity Targets and Indicators for the Nigeria National Biodiversity Strategy and Action Plan, restated the FG’s commitment to protect species threatened by over-exploitation, expand and strengthen protected areas.

The validated National Biodiversity Targets and Indicators for the Nigeria National Biodiversity Strategy and Action Plan is a policy instrument to mainstream its elements with broader strategies and plans, such as national sustainable development plans, national development plans, poverty reduction strategies, and other relevant national sectoral and cross-sectoral plans, in line with national priorities.

Salako said, “It is clear that we must use all of the tools at our disposal to reduce the threats to biodiversity, and the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework is guiding our way. The African continent is more vulnerable to climate change, species loss, and biodiversity destruction than others. African environments and resources, including that of our country, have been hit hard by decades and centuries of exploitation mostly perpetrated by other countries, especially in the global north. And now our environments, our wildlife, our lands, and our peoples are most at risk.

“But Nigeria and the rest of African nations are leading the way to protect our planet’s biodiversity. Because Africa will be the most affected by the biodiversity and climate crisis, we are united in being the most ambitious in protecting our lands, our seas, our wildlife, and our people. This is our role today, as trustees of the Nigerian people, to shine the beacon of hope for the natural world. Let ambition guide you as you validate the goals, targets, and indicators that will guide Nigeria’s response to the biodiversity crisis.

“National Biodiversity Strategy and Action Plan is the policy instrument for national implementation of the Convention on Biological Diversity. To accelerate action towards achieving the vision for biodiversity and living in harmony with nature by 2050, NBSAP must be rapidly aligned and validated with the new goals and targets of the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework.”

The minister noted that the KMGBF must be translated into bold action as national goals, targets, and measures must match the urgency of the crisis.

“Let us unite to ensure that our call for ambition for the expansion of protected areas is matched with equal ambition on finance, on halting human-induced extinction of wild species, on mutual accountability to halt forest loss and degradation, on securing species recovery and the restoration of jeopardized ecosystems,” he added.

The Country Representative at the Food and Agriculture Organisation, Koffy Kouame, lauded Nigeria’s dedication to integrating agrifood systems into its national strategies.

Kouame, who was represented by FAO’s Climate Change Specialist, Nifesimi Ogunkua, pledged support to the implementation and evaluation of the NBSAPs.

“At FAO, we stand shoulder to shoulder with Nigeria in this endeavour. Our commitment extends beyond mere words, as we pledge our full support to the implementation and evaluation of the NBSAPs. We recognise the importance of a holistic approach and are ready to work closely with Nigeria to achieve these goals.

“To facilitate this process, FAO has developed an impressive array of tools, frameworks, and approaches specifically designed to support the realisation of the Global 2030 targets. We believe that by leveraging these tools, Nigeria will significantly achieve its KMGBF national targets.

“FAO is open to collaborating with other partners in Nigeria. We understand the importance of collective action, and our doors are open. We are ready to work hand in hand with government agencies, non-governmental organizations, and other stakeholders to ensure the successful Implementation of the NBSAPs,” he stated

President Bola Tinubu has extended his condolences to the family of the President-General of Ohanaeze Ndigbo Worldwide, Chief Emmanuel Iwuanyanwu, who passed away on Thursday.

The family confirmed his demise on Thursday evening in a statement that partly read, “The Iwuanyanwu family of Umuohii Atta, in Ikeduru Local Government Area of Imo State, announces the demise of our patriarch, Chief Emmanuel Chukwuemeka Iwuanyanwu-Ahaejiagamba Ndigbo.

“Chief Iwuanyanwu died on Thursday, July 25, 2024, after a brief illness. He was aged 82.”

He was an accomplished businessman and notable politician.

Ngelale said, “President Tinubu condoles with the Imo State Government, the friends and associates of the deceased, and Ndi Igbo over this irreparable loss.

“The President affirms that Chief Iwuanyanwu will always be remembered for his remarkable legacy.”

Tinubu, therefore, prayed for the repose of the soul of the departed elder statesman and comfort for his family

Govt won’t encourage violent protest, says Tinubu

President Bola Tinubu on Thursday said his administration will uphold democratic principles, including the right to protest, but will not condone demonstrations that lead to the destruction of lives and property.

“In as much as we believe that demonstrations are part of democracy, we will never encourage any protests that lead to the destruction of lives and property,” Tinubu stated when he received a Letter of Credence from the newly appointed United States Ambassador to Nigeria, Richard Mills Jr., at the Presidential Villa, Abuja.

The Special Adviser to the President on Media and Publicity, Ajuri Ngelale, revealed the exchange at the ceremony in a statement titled ‘President Tinubu receives U.S. ambassador, underscores the importance of sustaining democracy, its norms and institutions.’

Tinubu said this on the backdrop of growing calls for nationwide protests against economic hardship, scheduled for August 1, 2024.

The President said, “During the military era, we made our voices heard against dictatorship, and I was part of the group that engaged in peaceful protests without resorting to the destruction of property.

“We have worked hard to ensure 25 years of unbroken democracy and I will continue to maintain this democracy.”

He also described Nigeria-US relations as “rich,” committing to uphold democracy.

“Our relationship with America is rich. We believe in democracy and freedom. Some of your predecessors worked hard during our transition to democracy, and we remember the likes of Ambassador Howard Jeter.

“We look forward to Nigeria and the United States continuously working to expand cooperation on shared goals and democratic values,” he said.

Tinubu welcomed the U.S. State Department’s acknowledgement of Nigeria’s strategic role on the continent as Africa’s largest democracy, calling on the U.S. government to pay more attention to Africa.

He said, “Nigeria is ready to play its role as the largest democracy in Africa that is worthy of emulation to other African countries, but we need more U.S. partnership on the continent that is beneficial to both sides.

“We believe in freedom, and we are providing the leadership to make Nigeria’s economy grow.”

On his part, Mills affirmed the U.S. support for Nigeria’s democracy and pledged support for bigger roles for Nigeria in the international arena.

“Nigeria is crucial to the United States because we share democratic values, and we are ready to give you all the support.

“I am here to make sure that the relationship blossoms both on democracy and the economic side,” Mills said.

The Ambassador also expressed the United States’ commitment to expanding cooperation with Nigeria on cybercrimes, announcing the establishment of a special office at the Embassy to work closely with the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission.

Earlier, President Tinubu also received Letters of Credence from the High Commissioner of Malaysia to Nigeria,  Aiyub Bin Omar, and the High Commissioner of Botswana, Ms. Phild Nani Kereng.

He told the High Commissioner of Malaysia that Nigeria would work towards improving the balance of trade between the two countries.

“Diversification of the economy is uppermost on my Renewed Hope Agenda for Nigeria.

“We must look at how we can improve the balance of trade with Malaysia,” the President said.

Tinubu also acknowledged that many Nigerian students find studying in Malaysia attractive, adding that Nigeria looks forward to their contributions to the development of critical sectors of the economy, such as agriculture and ICT.

The Malaysian High Commissioner said that ahead of the 50th anniversary of the establishment of bilateral relations in 2025, Malaysia is looking forward to strengthening relations with Nigeria.

“We are pleased with our cooperation in the areas of education. We are also keen on working with Nigerian partners in the financial services sector,” the High Commissioner said.

In his audience with the Botswana High Commissioner, the President expressed Nigeria’s readiness to develop robust cultural and economic cooperation with the Southern African country.

Acknowledging Botswana’s progress on livestock development, the President said he had received a briefing from a committee established to create a ministry of livestock development in Nigeria.

“The committee is at work, and their report will be ready in the next two weeks. Africa’s solution is in our hands. Nobody will help us if we do not help ourselves,” Tinubu said.

He described President Mokgweetsi Masisi of Botswana as a good friend and extended his appreciation to the Botswana President for attending his inauguration.

Kereng said Botswana is committed to being a leader in the production of livestock vaccines and is prepared to partner with Nigeria in this area.

She expressed admiration for Nigerian arts, entertainment, and culture, adding that young people from Botswana had a lot to learn from Nigeria’s youth-driven creative economy.

“My coming to Nigeria fulfils my President’s vision of improved relations with Nigeria, and I will work very hard to achieve these objectives,” said Kereng.
