The House of Representatives has said it would call for the sack of Group Chief Executive Officer of Nigeria National Petroleum Company Limited, NNPCL, Mele Kyari, if what they described as the “attempt to destroy Dangote Refinery” does not stop immediately.
The deputy spokesperson of the House, Philip Agbese, stated this while speaking with newsmen in Abuja on Saturday.
Agbese noted that the lawmakers had already called for the sack of the leadership of the Nigerian Midstream and Downstream Petroleum Regulatory Authority, NMDPRA.
He observed that both agencies – NNPCL and NMDPRA – have shown that they are interested in destroying the Dangote Refinery.
He stated that many Nigerians have called off the proposed hardship protest, but added that they want to see Kyari sacked if that would guarantee the smooth functioning of the country.
According to him, the House would investigate the ongoing spat between Dangote Refinery and the NMDPRA.
Agbese said the investigation is in line with the House’s commitment to protect all national assets and critical economic infrastructure, like the Dangote Refinery.
He said: “We have been seeing a lot by way of demarketing campaigns to discredit the Dangote Petroleum Refinery and given the negative impact of this, which has caused panic in the country.
“It is on record that the House directed the President to sack NMDPRA’s CEO.
“The House of Representatives will not hesitate to call for the sack of Mele Kyari if the attempt to destroy the refinery project, a national asset, does not stop immediately.”
Recall that the Speaker of the House of Representatives, Tajudeen Abbas, had earlier led a delegation of the House on a visit to the Dangote Refinery and Petrochemicals Company in Lagos.
Abbas said the visit provided valuable insights that would guide the House’s legislative measures and decisions.
He said the House was working to create a more business-friendly environment to make Nigeria an attractive destination for local and international investors.

Lagos East senator, Adetokunbo Abiru, has appealed to Nigerian youths to shelve their planned protest and engage in continuous dialogue, in the interest of the country.
Abiru, in a statement by his media aide, Enitan Olukotun, on Friday, sought the understanding of all Nigerians.
He said that President Bola Tinubu was not unmindful of the peculiar socio-economic challenges confronting the people, which predated his administration.
According to him, the President and all the political leadership of the country are frantically taking steps to address all the macro-economic misalignments, which are the bane of current hardship.
“In addition to the rafts of socio-economic intervention programmes, targeted at the most vulnerable Nigerians, including youths, the government is willing to engage with the people in other areas of concerns,” he said.
Abiru, therefore, appealed to Nigerian youths to toe the path of understanding, and shelve the planned protest.
He said that intelligence from security services suggested that the protest could be hijacked by enemies of the state.
He urged the organisers to engage the government, and present their specific demands, as government had shown commitment to reason with them

Iwuanyanwu lived last stage of his life for Ndigbo

Iwuanyanwu lived last stage of his life for Ndigbo

A former Governor of Imo State, Ikedi Ohakim, has expressed his sorrow over the death of the President General of Ohanaeze Ndigbo, Chief Emmanuel Iwuanyanwu.

His position was contained in a statement titled “Ahaejiagamba, we will miss you”, made available to journalists on Saturday.

Iwuanyanwu died on July 25, 2024, at the age of 82, following a brief illness.

According Online reports that Iwuanyanwu’s death was confirmed on Thursday by his son, Jide Iwuanyanwu.

Mourning the late Ndigbo leader, Okakim described Iwuanyanwu’s passing as “an appropriate illustration of a brilliant actor quitting the stage while the spectators are still standing in loud ovation.”

He said that after playing dominant roles in national politics, Iwuanyanwu’s last few years were the “most significant” because he lived them serving his people.

The statement read, “Chief Emmanuel Iwuanyanwu had for over 40 decades been in the national and international limelight, bestriding politics, business, sports etc but the last few years of his life were the most significant.

“The reason is simple. Chief Iwuanyanwu lived the last stage of his life serving his people–Ndigbo – after playing a dominant role in national politics and as an entrepreneur of international repute. It is a rare thing, something everybody hankers for to return home at the twilight of life to be and serve one’s people.

“Many of his calibre get stuck while seeking more recognition and relevance outside. Although a national icon, Chief Iwuanyanwu got wisdom and harkened to the call by his kinsmen to lead them at a most auspicious time both in their collective existence as a people and in their relationship with fellow compatriots across the country.

“As it is, what Ndigbo lost in Chief Iwuanyanwu’s unsuccessful bid to become the president of Nigeria they seem to have gained in the brief period he headed the Igbo nation’s apex socio-cultural body – the OhenezeNdigbo. His road map as President-General of the body was headed for an unprecedented transformation of Igboland.”

Ohakim also explained that, for the first time under Iwuanyanwu’s leadership of the Ohanaeze Ndigbo, the Igbo people experienced unity under a single organisation.

He added, “Under his leadership of the body, Ndigbo saw, for the first time, a pan-Igbo blueprint that would have brought together every facet of the Igbo race – from Owerri to Anioma, from Ikwere land to Ikot Abasi, from Ohaozara to Orokam, all over Igbo land. He mapped out a strategy for a deliberate pursuit of a development programme in all the sectors – agriculture, education, health, power, road infrastructure, security etc. For each sector, he set up committees headed by individuals with cognate experience in the area.

“The period was marked by a frenzy of activities that bellied his huge frame and put to rest earlier insinuations in some quarters that he was either too old for the job or did not possess the necessary physical fitness for it.

“He carried this alacrity to the very last days before his death. He traversed all over Nigeria calming frayed nerves whenever hostilities arose between Ndigbo and their hosts. But more importantly, he set up a programme for the Igbo living outside Igbo land to look back home while admonishing them to live peacefully with their hosts meanwhile.

“To be sure, past President-Generals of Ohaneze Ndigbo did quite creditably well, but it would appear that providence was waiting for a time like this to throw up a fellow like Emmanuel Iwuanyanwu to lead Ndigbo. Yes, he made very robust attempts to become the president of Nigeria but with the benefits of hindsight, it would appear that the same providence thought it would be better to preserve his energy till such a critical period like now when Ndigbo needed a leader that would at once guide them towards self-actualization as a people and at the same time ensure that they remain good citizens of their country, Nigeria.”

External, internal factors fuelling insecurity

External, internal factors fuelling insecurity

The Chief of Defence Staff, General Christopher Musa, has lamented the insecurity situation characterised by banditry, kidnapping and other related crimes ravaging the north.

The CDS declared that the security challenges in the Northern part of the country were being influenced by both external and internal factors such as the proliferation of small arms and light weapons, political instability, and socio-economic factors like poverty and inequality.

Musa who spoke as a guest speaker at the Institute of Development Research and Training, Ahmadu Bello University Zaria, Kaduna State, on Friday, insisted that the porous borders encouraged cross-border movements of criminals into the north.

He said, “Nigeria is of great socio-political importance to Africa and the world at large. Thus, the contemporary security situation in the country and the north is influenced by both external and internal factors.

“This is largely because Nigeria is a major actor in the sub-region. These amongst several other parameters are testaments of the importance of Nigeria in the continent and across the world.

“On the external scene, the situations in our contiguous nations and their other neighbours have also contributed to the insecurity in Northern Nigeria. For example, the political crisis in Libya and other sub-Saharan countries aggravated the security situation in Nigeria through the proliferation of Small Arms and Light Weapons into the country through Chad and Niger.

“Relatedly, Nigeria shares 1,600 km total land border with the Republic of Niger, 1,975kms with the Republic of Cameroun and a total of 85Kms with Chad Republic. Nigeria also shares a total distance of 809 km with Benin, most of which are in the north.

“The common denominator in all these borders is their porous nature which encourages cross-border movements of criminal elements including the Boko Haram Terrorists, Islamic States of West Africa Province, bandits, kidnappers, armed militias and violent herdsmen among other criminal elements.”

Musa added that a lot of citizens in Northern part of the country shared cultural and tribal ties with neighbouring countries, making the restriction of unauthorised cross-border movement difficult to enforce or control while also linking the devastating effect of change in the region (north) resulting to increased desertification and the shrinking of the Lake Chad as another factor causing insecurity in the north.

“This has led to the quest for water and grazing areas thus resulting in clashes and killings, especially across the North West and North Central Regions of the country,” he said.

Speaking on the topic: ‘Assessing the present security situation in Northern Nigeria’, Musa noted that other factors aggravating the security situation, especially in the north, include political factors, poor governance, infrastructure decay as well as indigenes and settlers rift.

On the economic front, the CDS said, the issues of extreme poverty and wealth as well as corruption and nepotism had remained a contributory factor to insecurity in northern Nigeria.

“From the social angle, issues of illiteracy, ethnoreligious factors and other related issues such as hunger and lack of social infrastructure are also key causes of the problem,” he said while adding that those issues had culminated in the emergence of terrorism, armed banditry, violent militias and kidnappings as well as herders farmers clash amongst other security threats in Northern Nigeria.

Speaking further, Musa also outlined the efforts of the Armed Forces to address security challenges, which include kinetic and non-kinetic approaches leading to military operations against terrorist groups and bandits, while non-kinetic approaches involved civil-military relations, civil-military cooperation, and community engagement.

The development, he said, had yielded positive results across the country and must sustained at winning the hearts and minds of citizens and encouraging other sectors of society to take ownership of the situation and contribute meaningfully to defeating the multifaceted threats.

He said, “The kinetic efforts of troops in various joint and subsidiary operations have yielded positive results across the country. In the North East, the ongoing Counter Terrorism and Counter Insurgency operations have so far degraded the Boko Haram Terrorists/Islamic State of West Africa Province terrorists while efforts by troops of Operation Hadin Kai have resulted in the mass surrender of over 115,687 terrorists and their families since July 2021 to date.

“Equally, socio-economic activities have improved and locals who were forced to flee have returned to their homelands.  In the North West, the Armed Forces of Nigeria have reduced the spate of armed banditry, cattle rustling and kidnapping whilst Operations Hadarin Daji and Whirl Punch continue to dominate respective Joint Operations Areas.”

He continued, “In the North Central, the recurrent violence in Plateau State particularly Bokkos, Barkin Ladi and Mangu Local Government Areas is being stabilized through various strategies. There is a reduction in terrorist migration to Niger and Kaduna States, degradation of Boko Haram Terrorists/Islamic State West Africa Province and improved security in Nasarawa and Taraba.  Also, several measures have been put in place to improve security in the Federal Capital Territory and environs.

“Overall, the kinetic actions of the Armed Forces of Nigeria have produced positive outcomes which we will continue to sustain. Other successes achieved from our Kinetic approach include improved security along the Abuja – Kaduna Road, the return of many citizens to their ancestral lands and livelihood and a containment and general improvement of the security situation in the North. Despite these improvements, some challenges still exist which we believe the military’s non-kinetic activities would help create an enabling environment to address.”
