Nationwide protest: Let’s not set Nigeria on fire – Lagos ex-lawmaker, Udimogu

0

A former two-term Lagos lawmaker of Igbo extraction, Mr Jude Idimogu, has urged Nigerian youths not to set the country on fire with the proposed nationwide protest.
Idimogu, who represented Oshodi-Isolo Constituency II in the Lagos State House of Assembly, made the appeal in an interview with NAN on Thursday in Lagos.
The lawmaker, who is also Deputy Apex Leader, Ndigbo in Lagos State APC, said that Nigerian youths must avert destructive protest and give President Bola Tinubu more time to reposition the economy.
According to him, the youth need to toe the path of dialogue rather than any protest that can be hijacked by the enemies of the nation.
“I want all of us to be patriotic, no matter how it is. We know President Bola Tinubu’s background as someone who has also suffered before getting to the office. He feels the pains of Nigerians.
“The President knows Nigerians are suffering, and he is working hard to end the suffering, I want to appeal to you to please save this nation.
“Let this nation not go on fire, I am begging the Nigerian youths in particular, let us not use our hands to destroy our country,” he said.
Idimogu called on Nigerians to be united in efforts toward improving the nation’s economy.
“Though tribes and tongues may differ, in brotherhood we stand. This country belongs to us because we don’t have any other place that is ours.
“Others may have destroyed their country but we must not follow their footsteps.
“Yet, protest is our right but you can use other channels to meet with the government and express your opinion.” he said.

Nigeria sinking deeper into a debt hole

0

CONVENTIONAL wisdom dictates that you cannot get out of a hole by digging deeper. This is exactly what the Federal Government is doing with the N6.2 trillion supplementary budget approved by the Senate on Tuesday.

This addition brings the 2024 budget to N35.05 trillion, up from N28.7 trillion initially approved. President Bola Tinubu sought approval from the National Assembly last week to raise the budget figure to provide an additional N3.2 trillion for certain infrastructure projects and N3 trillion for the new minimum wage.

The Chairman of the Senate Committee on Appropriations, Olamilekan Adeola (APC, Ogun West), said that the increase would be financed with the one-time windfall tax on banks’ forex profits for 2023 as approved by NASS.

While the government has presented justification for the additional expenses, the supplementary appropriation raised concerns about Nigeria’s worsening debt situation. The Tinubu administration passed a supplementary budget of N2.7 trillion last year.

The Debt Management Office stated that the country’s total public debt has increased significantly to N121.67 trillion (approximately $91.46 billion) as of March, up from N97.34 trillion in December. This rise is attributed to new borrowings to fund the 2024 budget deficit and the securitisation of a portion of the N7.3 trillion Ways and Means Advances with the CBN. The debt-to-GDP ratio surpassed 50 per cent for the first time since 1991.

The 2024 budget was predicated on a total expenditure of N28.78 trillion with a projected revenue of N19.7 trillion, implying a budget deficit of N10 trillion. The supplementary budget will widen this deficit since the windfall tax on bank forex gains is still uncertain.

The fresh appropriation will be funded by borrowing, despite what the government says. This will increase already high debt servicing obligations.

Nigeria spent N7.8 trillion to service its debt obligations in 2023, a 121 per cent increase compared to N3.52 trillion in the previous year.

A recent report by PwC Nigeria projected that debt service could rise from N8.25 trillion in 2024 to N9.3 trillion in 2025 and N11.1 trillion in 2026, which may affect the country’s debt servicing ability, credit rating outlook, and borrowing cost.

This year alone, the CBN has raised about N2.05 trillion through Treasury Bill auctions, while the DMO raised over N2 trillion from bond auctions. The Federal Government is seeking $1 billion from the World Bank and a Eurobond issue later in the year.

Budget deficits are dangerous to the economy because they result in increased national debt, high-interest payments, low national spending, high taxation, and worsen the already high inflationary trend. Nigeria needs to generate more revenues from within.

Part of the problem is the defective tax structure, which overtaxes the poor while the wealthy fail to pay appropriate taxes. Compliance is weak, default rates are high. Nigeria’s tax-to-GDP ratio, at 10.8 per cent, is below the African average of 16.5 per cent and one of the lowest in the world. The fiscal and tax reforms proposed by the Taiwo Oyedele committee, which addresses these anomalies, should be implemented immediately.

Increasing crude oil revenues by stopping oil theft and sundry leakages will add at least $6 billion annually to the treasury.

The government needs to reduce the cost of governance by containing the culture of waste and extravagance, which has been its hallmark. Expectations were that the Tinubu administration would have implemented the Steve Oronsaye report, which recommended streamlining the MDAs for effectiveness and to save costs. The government operates over 1,300 MDAs including foreign missions, which are not properly funded.

Nigeria will be left much worse off if this borrowing spree and budgetary deficit expansion trend are not curtailed.

‘Manufacturers will adjust to tariff hike with improved power supply’

0

The Ondo State Commissioner for Energy, Razaq Obe, has said manufacturers will adjust to paying more for electricity as they get better value.

He told The According that it would take some time but manufacturers, who had fought against recent electricity tariff hikes, to adjust, noting that they were better off with electricity from DisCos than generating power by buying AGOs.

“If you want to get power, you pay a little more,” the Ondo energy commissioner stated.

Obe, a speaker at a breakfast seminar hosted by the Lagos Chamber of Commerce and Industry themed ‘Developing a Sustainable Energy Market,’ in Lagos on Thursday, said the profitability of the DisCos would grow the market and make it more sustainable as the cost of electricity generation was high.

Other speakers at the energy seminar included the Lagos State Commissioner for Energy and Mineral Resources, Biodun Ogunleye and the LCCI President, Gabriel Idahosa, who recommended strategic initiatives, collaboration, and innovation as a path to sustainable energy in Nigeria.

Ogunleye emphasised the importance of a sustainable electricity market for Lagos State, Nigeria’s economic powerhouse.

The commissioner highlighted the necessity of reliable electricity to power homes, businesses, and industries, acknowledging the persistent challenges of insufficient generation capacity, ageing infrastructure, high transmission losses, and inadequate distribution networks.

However, he emphasised significant opportunities within those challenges, driven by global advancements in renewable energy and innovative business models.

“The global energy landscape is undergoing a transformation, driven by technological advancements, renewable energy sources, and innovative business models. Lagos State is uniquely positioned to leverage these opportunities and become a leader in developing a sustainable electricity market,” the commissioner stated.

Ogunleye recommended increasing electricity generation through a mix of traditional and renewable energy sources.

He noted that investing in renewable energy projects (solar, wind, and biomass) would reduce the carbon footprint and stimulate local economic growth.

He also suggested modernising infrastructure by upgrading transmission and distribution networks with smart grid technologies to improve efficiency and reliability.

Ogunleye said Lagos State would create an enabling environment for private investments in the electricity sector and foster innovation and research by establishing research centres and innovation hubs to explore new technologies and business models in the energy sector.

He also announced the state government’s legislative effort through the Lagos Electricity Bill, currently in the state House of Assembly, which aims to create a sustainable and efficient electricity market.

“The administration of Governor Babajide Sanwo-olu is bullish in its plans to make Lagos a 24/7 powered economy, as captured in its THEMES+ Agenda. Plans are in motion to build 5 energy hubs across the state and over the next two years, achieve 1GW of renewable energy and 2GW of fossil fuel power generation capacity,” he said.

Earlier, the LCCI president stated the need for a sustainable state energy market, emphasising the strategic importance of collaboration, innovation, and investment.

He noted the African Development Bank’s commitment of $1bn to support Nigeria’s power sector and the legislative advancements through the Electricity Act of 2023.

He called for stakeholders to embrace renewable energy as an environmental and economic opportunity and for more investment in training and education to sustain growth in the energy sector.

“Developing the skills and expertise of our workforce is essential for sustaining growth in the energy sector. Investments in training and education, as well as fostering partnerships with educational institutions and industry, will ensure that we have the human capital needed to drive innovation and efficiency in the sector,” the LCCI president remarked.

Idahosa pointed out that despite an installed grid generation capacity of approximately 13,014.14 MW, Nigeria’s energy sector has been struggling with reliability, leaving over 92 million Nigerians in energy poverty.

He urged the federal and state governments to be proactive in policy formulation and infrastructure development.

NGOs condemn delay in probe of suspected cop

0

Some Non Governmental Organisations have condemned what they describe as a lengthy investigation of a police officer accused of raping a 17-year-old girl inside a police station in Lagos.

According Metro reported that the suspect, who was believed to be attached with the Ogudu Area H Command, allegedly raped the teenager after she went to the station to report a stolen phone.

Despite assurances from the state police command and the Lagos State Domestic and Sexual Violence Agency that there would be no cover-up, the findings of the probe  have not been disclosed two weeks later.

The command spokesperson, Benjamin Hundeyin, had also said on July 14, 2024, that the command would not shield the suspect, saying, “The case is under full investigation. There is no plan to cover up the allegation.”

When According Metro reached out to Hundeyin on Thursday, his mobile phone rang without an answer, but he sent a text message instructing our correspondent to text him. As of the time this report was filed, he had not responded to the text message.

Additionally, the Lagos State DSVA had claimed that a medical test was being conducted on the survivor. When our correspondent contacted the spokesperson, Adejoke Ladenegan-Oginni, about the test status, she said the agency would forward the results to the appropriate channel once available.

“We are not the ones conducting the medical examination. We will forward the results to the appropriate authorities once they are available. We are on top of the situation,” she told our correspondent on Thursday.

Responding to the prolonged investigation, the President of the Centre for Human and Social Economic Rights, Comrade Alex Omotehinse, criticised the Nigeria Police Force for setting a bad precedent.

“This is a usual police tactic. The LSDSVA should try as much as possible not to allow this investigation to drag on. They should do as much as possible to do a proper follow-up or else the police will sweep this case under the rug.

“This case would have been a proper incident for the police to clean their system. It should have been used as a deterrent to other officers who are using their offices in their divisions to perpetrate evil,” he said.

The founder of Serene Early-Trobb Concept (Inclusive Initiative), Rhoda Olorunfemi, urged other civil society organisations to support the survivor and ensure that justice was served.

She said, “When I hear cases like this, I get angry because we are in a society where women and girls are not taken seriously. Every woman should be angry that the investigation is taking this long. Every civil society organisation should not sleep on this matter.

“The Nigeria Police Force is supposed to be protecting the masses and rights of the girl children. They are supposed to be enforcing the law. This matter may die if people don’t speak for the survivor.”

The suspect whose identities has yet to be made public had reportedly absconded from work after the incident but turned himself in for questioning later.

It’s very unfortunate that he did not complete his mission, to unite all the tribes in Nigeria.”

In a condolence message signed by his Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Ajuri Ngelale, Tinubu condoled with the family, the Imo State government, friends and associates of the deceased and the Ndigbo over what he termed irreparable loss.

“The President affirms that Chief Iwuanyanwu will always be remembered for his remarkable legacy,” the statement noted as he prayed for the repose of the soul of the departed elder statesman.

Buhari, in a statement by his spokesman, Garba Shehu, extended his condolences to the Iwuanyanwu family, friends and associates, and the entire people of the South East.

The former President said, “He was a visionary who revolutionised the nation’s media and sports. He made notable strides in the media industry, construction, sports, business, and politics.

“I had several opportunities to interact with him to learn about his passionate commitment to the unity, peaceful coexistence, and the development of Nigeria. His rich contributions have left indelible memories on the media, sports, politics, and business where he made extraordinary achievements.”

The Chairman of the Southern Governors’ Forum and Governor of Ogun State, Dapo Abiodun, described the death of Iwuanyanwu as a profound loss to the nation.

Abiodun, in a statement on behalf of the southern states governors on Thursday, described the news of the death of the businessman, publisher, and politician as shocking.

He said as President General of Ohanaeze Ndigbo, the apex socio-cultural organisation of the Igbo people, Iwuanyanwu worked tirelessly to preserve the unity of the country with his timely interventions at critical times when contentious issues were raging.

“I received with shock the news of the death of the President General of Ohanaeze Ndigbo, Chief Emmanuel Iwuanyanwu. His passing at this critical time when his counselling as an elder statesman is needed is saddening.

“Chief Iwuanyanwu was a remarkable leader, statesman, and patriot who dedicated his life to promoting the unity, progress, and well-being of the Igbo nation and Nigeria as a whole.

“His contributions to fostering inter-ethnic harmony, peaceful co-existence, and mutual understanding between the diverse peoples of our country were huge. His death is a profound loss not only for the Igbo nation but for Nigeria as a whole.

“On behalf of the Southern Governors’ Forum, I extend our heartfelt condolences to the Iwuanyanwu family, the Ohanaeze Ndigbo family, the entire South-East region and Nigeria as a whole.”

Similarly, the Anambra State Governor, Prof. Chukwuma Soludo, has mourned Iwuanyanwu, describing him as a “distinguished statesman, notable patriot, renowned businessman.”

Soludo, in a statement by his Press Secretary, Christian Aburime, said,”Chief Iwuanyanwu was a personal mentor, a great supporter as well as an influential figure whose life and wise counsel were a tribute to exceptional leadership, patriotism, and steadfast dedication to the progress of the Igbo nation and Nigeria as a Country.

“His contributions to the socio-economic development of Nigeria are immeasurable. As the publisher of the Champion Newspapers and owner of several other businesses, his entrepreneurial spirit and philanthropic endeavours have left an enduring legacy in our nation.”

The senator representing Anambra Central Senatorial District in the National Assembly, Senator Victor Umeh, said the Igbo nation was losing its icons in quick succession.

He listed notable figures like Obiozor, Ogbonnaya Onu, Dim Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu, Alex Ekwueme, and Ben Nwabueze, amongst others, as those who had passed on in recent times.

Describing Iwuanyanwu’s death as “a tragic loss,” Umeh said that “he died while serving the Igbo nation. The emotion reflects the sense of loss felt across the Igbo nation at the passing of another respected leader.”

Senators and members of the House of Representatives from Abia State lamented the death of Iwuanyanwu.

The senator representing Abia North at the National Assembly, Orji Uzor Kalu, expressed sadness as he acknowledged the remarkable contributions of the late prominent businessman and politician, known for his significant contributions to various sectors, particularly in the social, economic, and political development of Nigeria.

He said Iwuanyanwu “lived a purposeful life dedicated to the service of humanity.”

Former Senate Minority Leader, Senator Eyinnaya Abaribe, in his statement, described Iwuanyanwu as best among equals, stating, “The death of Dr Iwuanyanwu is a huge loss of a consummate Nigerian patriot who was also the best among equals in Igbo land.”

In a terse statement through his Media Adviser, Uchenna Awom, in Abuja, on Thursday, Abaribe said he was saddened by the death of Iwuanyanwu, particularly at this time when he, alongside other patriots, had kick-started a crucial process that would enthrone a lasting peace and harmonious relationship in Nigeria, especially in Igbo land.

He said, “Here was a patriot, a consummate lover of our people and a focused progressive who was at the forefront of infrastructural revolution in the old Imo State and the overall development of our dear country Nigeria.

“Chief Iwuanyanwu was an all-rounder, who never glossed over responsibilities that would be beneficial to all, irrespective of tribe or religion. Thank you for all you did for our people. We will miss your wise counsel and your focused leadership of Ohanaeze Ndigbo.”

In a press release from the Office of the Deputy Speaker, House of Representatives, Abuja, the Deputy Speaker, Hon. Benjamin Kalu, described the late Ohanaeze chieftain as iroko who has fallen in Igbo land.

In the statement by his Chief Press Secretary, Levinus Nwabughiogu, Kalu likened Iwuanyanwu’s death to a fallen Iroko tree, adding that he contributed immensely to the socio-economic development of Nigeria.

Recalling that Iwuanyanwu, through his many business establishments, employed many Nigerians, and recognised the patriotic and philanthropic gestures of the deceased, which he exemplified through the Iwuanyanwu National Ambulance that catered for accident victims all over Nigeria, amongst others.

He also recalled Chief Iwuanyanwu’s contributions to the successful unveiling of the Peace In South East Project in Bende Local Government of Abia State in December 2023, saying that his commitment to the peace and unity of Nigeria was unparalleled.

Also, the immediate-past senator representing Abia Central and former governor of the state, Chief Orji Kalu, acknowledging the remarkable contributions of the late prominent businessman and politician, said he was heartbroken.

“I feel for the family, the state, Ndigbo and Nigeria at large,” he said in a statement he signed and released by his Liaison Officer, Hon. Ifeanyi Umere.

The former governor recognised the contributions made by Iwuanyanwu in politics, business and humanitarian efforts, and prayed to God to give his soul repose.

A 2023 presidential aspirant on the platform of the Peoples Democratic Party, Sam Ohuabunwa, described Iwuanyanwu as a selfless leader who stood for equity, justice and peaceful co-existence.

“His life and works will remain an inspiration to the present and forthcoming generations on the lessons of tolerance and unity,” he said.

A statement by the former President of the Pharmaceutical Society of Nigeria, a copy of which was obtained by The According, read: “My team members at the Ohanaeze Council of Igbo Business Leaders and I are greatly pained by the sad news of the passage to the great beyond of Chief Iwuanyanwu (Ahaejiagamba Ndigbo) today, July 25, 2024. We have not just lost a trusted and dependable ally, but a good friend, a true patriot, and a highly esteemed elder statesman.

“Chief Iwuanyanwu was an exemplary, unpretentious and self-effacing leader; and a first-class gentleman and business mogul…He was a man of peace who will be remembered for his candour, open-mindedness and civility. His life and works will remain an inspiration to present and forthcoming generations on the lessons of tolerance, unity and peaceful co-existence.”

The leadership of the Movement for the Actualisation of the Sovereign State of Biafra said it received the news of the demise of Iwuanyanwu, “with a devastative shock.”

Describing Iwuanyanwu as “a devout and dedicated Igbo leader,” MASSOB lamented that “Ndigbo shall miss him,” adding that “his fatherly efforts and commitment for the release of Nnamdi Kanu shall never be in vain.”

The Coalition of Nigerian Youth Leaders, the umbrella body of all youth groups in Nigeria, expressed shock at the passing of Iwuanyanwu.

In a statement signed by its President-General and National Publicity Secretary, Comrades Goodluck Ibem and Junaid Abubakar, respectively, CONYL said, “This news is devastating, painful and a big loss to Ndigbo, Nigeria and the world.

“Chief Iwuanyawu was a great philanthropist, an engineer of great repute, an enigma of sorts, a trailblazer, a problem solver, a goal getter and a man with an overflowing zeal to be a blessing to his people and his generation.”

Rivers seals Wike loyalist’s hotel

0

The Rivers State government has sealed off a five-storey building belonging to the immediate-past Chairman of Ikwerre Local Government Area, Dr Samuel Nwanosike, over an alleged violation of the approved building plan.

The building site at the GRA axis of Port Harcourt was said to be a hotel, even as it had reached an advanced completion stage.

It was gathered that Nwanosike, an ally of the Minister of Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, had applied and submitted a building plan for a four-storey building.

The structure was extended to a five-storey building without plan review.

The site was sealed on Wednesday by officials of the Rivers State Ministry of Physical Planning and Urban Development.

The Commissioner for Urban and Physical Development, Isaac Umejuru, said the owner of the building applied to build a four-storey, but constructed five-storey instead, describing it as a violation.

Umejuru said the ministry had sealed off the place to conduct integrity tests and then take further action.

Meanwhile, a viral video seen by our correspondent showed the moment Dr Nwanosike was engaged in a heated argument with the ministry officials at the site of the property, as the latter said he would bequeath the property to Governor Siminalayi Fubara.

In the altercation, Nwanosike said, “Nobody can intimidate me,” while an official retorted that he was not being intimidated but that he violated the approval given to him.

Nwanosike said, “This property I will give to you and Fubara; N555bn contravention, that is what you said I should pay? We will wait; we will not be afraid. But this will not change Dr Samuel Nwanosike. I have written to you formally, but you have not responded. Let everybody hear it.”

One of the officials from the ministry said, “Nobody is intimidating you. You said you wrote to us, and we have responded. You contravened the approval you were given. Are you threatening me because I’m doing my official work? It is known, and let it be known that this building was sealed…”

Wike and Fubara have been at loggerheads since last year and the face-off has also driven apart their loyalists.

I would’ve dropped gov ambition if Obaseki was reasonable – Shaibu

0

The reinstated Deputy Governor of Edo, Philip Shaibu, said had his principal, Godwin Obaseki, been reasonable and spoken to him well, he (Shaibu) would have dropped his governorship ambition and allow the governor have his way in order to preserve their relationship.

Shaibu, who described Obaseki as a dictator, said he became more resolved to pursue his governorship ambition after Obaseki threatened he would destroy him if he did not back down.

He maintained that he won the Edo State Peoples Democratic Party’s governorship primary because he had 381 delegates, who would have voted for him had not not been shut out of the Samuel Ogbemudia Stadium in Benin where the exercise took place on February 22.

Shaibu, who has now defected from the PDP to the All Progressives Congress, spoke on Wednesday when he paid a courtesy visit to the APC National Working Committee in Abuja.

He said he felt betrayed by Obaseki despite all his sacrifices and loyalty to him.

He said, “The truth is that the issues were all political. I declared to contest for the governor of Edo State. That is where the fight started.”

Looking pensive, the deputy governor told journalists that he did everything humanly possible to pacify his boss to no avail.

“He (Obaseki) said, ‘You cannot contest because I have my plans’. The next thing was that he would destroy me if I continued. For me, no man can destroy the plan of God. As an activist, that day I made up my mind that I was going to contest. As of the time our conversation was on, I was still consulting. I went into the race and I won it because I played high-powered politics. They are not politicians. They rode on our back to where they are. In the politics I played, I actually had 400 out of the 572 delegates.

“A week to the primary, I lost some and had 381. So I brought those 381 on the day of the primary but they were refused accreditation. They took the accreditation tags and gave to their appointees to go and do Aso Ebi reception at the stadium they call primaries. Now, the court has ruled that the delegates I had were the authentic delegates and the ones they brought were fake. So as it is, they have boxed themselves into a corner where I don’t want to go because it is a legal issue.

“We are in court and by the grace of God, I had already been vindicated by two judgments. What is critical is that I want to prove internal democracy must be respected and allowed to play. You can lobby, you can talk to people and people will understand. If the governor had shown leadership, maybe I wouldn’t have contested because I am not a desperate person. My ambition is not inordinate. I have an ambition to fix the state. If somebody else can agree that we collectively fix it, I will follow. But the governor wanted to behave like a military dictator. And for me, we fought. I have captained people that have fought for this democracy. I started from the youth wing. I am sure I am one of the top people you will mention for this democracy that we now have. And for me, I cannot watch this democracy be derailed and allow dictatorship to take control.”

He described as false the claim that he went away with 22 official vehicles after his impeachment.

According to the accountant-turned-politician, the governor bought only one official car for his convoy in the seven and a half years of their administration.

Shaibu said, “The easiest way to have a disagreement is money. Even my official entitlements, most of them I didn’t even apply for them. That is, anything that has to do with going to meet the governor to apply for anything, including my personal or official entitlement. I confined myself within the official salary that came to me. “Recently, I saw an advert that I should return 22 vehicles. Only one vehicle in the seven and a half years that the governor bought for my convoy. Only one. Every vehicle you see in my convoy, some of them, especially the Landcruiser I used for three years with a coat of arm and flag as staff car, the Prado I used as back-up for three years, was the same that I used as the Majority Leader of the Edo State House of Assembly.

“It was the third year of his first term that the governor eventually bought a Landcruiser jeep. Even when they were bringing the jeep, it had an accident on the way. We had to change the wheels and it took two weeks for us to fix it. I never made it an issue, because for me, anything that will bring trouble I was able to manage it. I am happy that I gave everything and I was never found wanting. I was not impeached because I stole money, I was not corrupt, or because of incompetence.

“Today, the court has also told us that what they said was gross misconduct was never a misconduct. They said I gave out government secrets. I have worked diligently with this man. I was asked to perform his duty as acting governor and I was able to organise the security system. I have not done anything wrong to warrant impeachment.”

When asked if he could ever forgive Obaseki for treating him as an outcast, Shaibu hesitated before nodding.

He said, “The only person that is perfect is the Almighty God. None of us created by God is perfect. One of the greatest commandments in the world is ‘Love your neighbour as yourself.’ If all of us can actually take to that commandment, there will be peace in the world. But I have just discovered that there is no perfect relationship with what has happened between the governor and me.

“From my own end, I gave everything. I gave all to have him succeed. Because, for me, it is about the state and the state in everything. So, I gave everything even my official earnings. I forfeited lots of my official entitlement. Why? It is because I didn’t want any trouble or disagreement.”

Gunmen attack Okada rider, chop off hand

0

Gunmen, on Wednesday, attacked a 50-year-old Okada rider, Sikiru Muritala, in Ibadan, the Oyo State capital in an attempt to snatch the machine, and chopped off his hand.

Investigations by According Metro revealed that the incident happened at Saribi in the Akinyele Local Government Area of the state around 9 pm, and all efforts by the men of the underworld to snatch the bike were unsuccessful.

Speaking with our correspondent on his hospital bed at the University College Hospital, Ibadan, on Thursday, Muritala said, “I am a trailer mechanic, but when things turned upside down, I decided to go for Okada business.

“On that day, though, I normally picked passengers to that area. I went to drop a passenger, and as I was coming back, they attacked me with the intention of snatching the bike. They spoke the language I didn’t understand. Unfortunately, they were unable to go with the bike. But they chopped off my hand. You can see for yourself.

“They chopped off my hand and collected my phone and all my money. We are spending a huge amount of money currently at the UCH. I need government assistance and well-to-do people in society to assist me. They should help me,” he pleaded.

As of press time, all efforts to get a reaction from the Police Public Relations Officer, Adewale Osifeso, were not successful, as his telephone number was not reachable.
