Nationwide protest not in national interest — Third Republic lawmakers

0

The class of Third Republic lawmakers has called on the planners of the nationwide protest slated for 1 August 2024 to shelve their agitation, stating that the rally is not in the nation’s interest.

The group made this statement during a press conference at the National Assembly Complex in Abuja on Friday.

According Online reports that the Third Republic of Nigeria refers to the short-lived political era in Nigeria between 1992 and 1993. It was an attempt to transition from military rule to civilian government.

Accompanied by incumbent lawmaker and Chairman of the House Committee on Petroleum Resources (Upstream), Alhassan Ado-Doguwa, who was first elected into the federal parliament in 1992, the group called for support for the Bola Tinubu-led government, noting that the rewards of the government’s ongoing policies will begin to manifest soon.

Speaking at the event, the leader of the group, Mr Basil Okafor, said the negative impacts of the protest are likely to outweigh any potential benefits.

“While the right to protest is an integral part of any democracy, it is essential to acknowledge the negative consequences that can arise when protests are conducted in a tense atmosphere, considering the prevalence of drug use among the youth.

“Typical and recent examples of what to expect were seen in Kenya and Uganda, which we believe the planners wish to emulate and perpetrate in Nigeria.

“Protests, when carried out peacefully and responsibly, have the power to bring attention to important social, political, and economic issues. They allow voices to be heard, encourage dialogue, and promote change.

“However, in a society already burdened with tension, protests can exacerbate existing problems, further dividing people and escalating tensions,” Okafor said.

The protest, according to the group, is capable of breeding unrest, with unpredictable consequences.

“It is important to recognise that a tense society is often characterised by polarised opinions, conflicting ideologies, and deep-seated emotions. In such an environment, protests can easily become breeding grounds for violence and unrest. The frustration, anger, and resentment that lie beneath the surface can erupt into chaos, undermining the very purpose of the protest and causing harm to individuals and property.

“Secondly, the ills of protest in a tense society lie in the potential for manipulation and exploitation by various stakeholders. In times of tension and strife, extremist groups or political factions may exploit protests to further their agenda. They may infiltrate peaceful demonstrations, incite violence, and spread misinformation, leading to a distortion of the original purpose of the protest and the dilution of its message.

“Protests conducted in a tense society often result in a breakdown of communication and dialogue. Instead of fostering understanding and empathy, they deepen divisions and create an ‘us versus them’ mentality. People from opposing sides become entrenched in their positions, refusing to listen or engage in meaningful conversation. The very essence of a protest, the desire for change and progress, becomes overshadowed by animosity and hostility,” Okafor added.

The group called on those unhappy with the state of affairs in the country to embrace dialogue with the government to find lasting solutions to the issues they are set to protest about.

Okafor continued, “All stakeholders need to engage in open, constructive dialogue, fostering understanding and empathy, even when faced with opposing viewpoints.

While adding that the President is doing his best to address various issues of national concern, the group regretted that there are no leaders of the planned protest known to the public, which would have made meaningful engagement with them inevitable.

“Just yesterday (Thursday), the President met leaders from various parts of the country, including traditional rulers and religious leaders. Unfortunately, there are no clear leaders of the planned protest, a sign that nobody is ready to take responsibility if the protest turns sour,” he stressed.

Fielding questions from reporters, Ado-Doguwa said the group was not speaking for the Federal Government but urging those behind the planned protest to give peace a chance.

“None of us is here to speak for the government per se or to provide excuses for why this is done or not done. All the 593 of us are saying is that the government should be allowed to work to address this situation.

“This group met, deliberated, and felt we should come out boldly to voice our stance that we are not in support of this alleged national protest because it will be counterproductive. It’s only when we have peace that we can have development,” he added.

“We are pleading with Nigerians to sheathe their swords. We are pleading with whosoever is out on the street trying to create chaos, trying to create disquiet in the economy and the country, to please allow Mr President a chance. We will get there and Nigeria will prosper,” the Kano lawmaker stated.

BREAKING: Foreign mercenaries involved in planned protest

0

The Inspector General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, on Friday, said that intelligence at the disposal of the Force has revealed that foreign mercenaries are involved in the proposed nationwide protest.

Addressing journalists in Abuja, Egbetokun urged all Nigerians to exercise caution and think twice before joining any protest group.

Egbetokun said, “We have been monitoring development surrounding protest threats. While some groups call for violent protests, emulating Kenya’s recent events, others advocate for peaceful demonstrations.

“However, some individuals promote peaceful protests with violent undertones, raising concerns about their sincerity. We have our history of violent protests in Nigeria, and I don’t believe we have to look to other countries to note the dangers of unchecked demonstrations. We commend patriots who have withdrawn from the protest due to the apparent sinister motives and ignorance of those calling for violence.

“We note those who have spoken out against any form of protest at this critical juncture, fearing enemies of our country may be manipulating the process. We confirm their fears are genuine, as we have credible intelligence on foreign mercenaries’ involvement in this planned protest. The Nigerian police urge all Nigerians to exercise caution and think twice before joining any protest group.”

Only identifiable protesters will be allowed, says Anambra CP

0

The Commissioner of Police in Anambra, Nnaghe Obono Itam, has insisted that only identifiable protesters in the state would be allowed to participate during the proposed nationwide hunger protest starting on August 1.

Itam cautioned that any form of violence or unlawful activities during the protest would not be tolerated.

The CP stated this in Awka, on Friday, adding that protesters should go and identify themselves at their nearest police locations, adding that only the identifiable protesters will be protected, noting that faceless individuals will not be allowed to participate.

He said the Command would not stop people from protesting, but any action that threatens the fragile peace in the state would not be tolerated.

He said, “There is a need to be cautious as some people may attempt to hijack the protest to perpetrate crimes or victimise others, including those who are not involved in the protest.

“I want to state clearly that the Police is mandated to regulate assemblies and protect peaceful protesters who are identified, as well as their routes and or locations of interest. But, the command would not tolerate any violence or any protest that threatened the fragile peace in the state.

“Intended protesters should visit the Command for proper identification. We are not stopping any law-abiding citizen not to protesting, but should be peaceful and orderly. We want those who wish to participate in the August 1 protest to identify themselves properly with the security agencies in the state and also the location where the protest will take place.

“Our responsibility is to protect the lives and property of every Nigeria irrespective of anywhere he/she resides in Nigeria.”

He further added that faceless persons would not be allowed to protest, stating that he had made it clear that protesters on that occasion must identify themselves.

The CP’s position corroborated with the position of Inspector General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, who urged all groups planning to participate in the proposed nationwide protest to submit their details to the Commissioners of Police in their respective states.

Abuja Firm queries House of Reps’ power to probe cases pending in court

0

The House of Representatives has been asked to desist from further initiating investigation into cases already pending before the court of laws in the country.
This request is contained in a letter written to the House of Representatives by a senior lawyer, Babs Akinwumi in response to an invitation to his client, Oxford International Group Limited.
The House of Representatives, through its Committee on Public Petitions, claimed, in its invitation, dated July 4, that it was investigating Oxford and its subsidiaries “for criminal conspiracy, obtaining by false pretence, fraudulent practices, among others, contained in a petition by some of its investors.
Oxford, in its response, dated July 23, denied being involved in unlawful activities but blamed the current downturn in the nation’s economy for its inability to meet its investors’ expectations.
It said the case the House of Representatives seeks to investigate, had been investigated by police and found that it relates purely to commercial transactions, without criminal element.
The firm added that the matter was currently the subject of a pending case before the High Court of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) in suit No: FCT/HC/CV/3237/2024.
It argued that the House of Reps lacks the power to investigate a matter pending in court, adding that its oversight powers under Sections 88 and 89 of the Constitution did not extend to a private entity not publicly funded.
Part of the letter reads: “Our client is a genuine business entity with no intention of any criminality as listed in the subject of your summons
“The inclement business environment pervading the country was what took its unfortunate toll on our client and its subsidiaries.
“This fact that our client has no criminal intention has been established by the police in the course of its investigation of our client on the same subject you are seeking to investigate.ate now.
“We also wish to inform you that the subject of summons is also sub judice in suit No: FCT/HC/CV/3237/2024
“Therefore, and without doubt, the extended invitations to our clients and the purported investigations built around the subject are now sub judice.
“For clarity’s sake, when a matter Is subjudice, it means that there Is an end to the discussion, such matter cannot be discussed in either the press or the public and parties thereto are expected to stay all actions and anticipate its determination by the court.
“Thus, carrying out further actions whether in the guise of investigation or for any other non-judicial purpose is forbidden as the matter Is sub judice.
“We therefore beseech you to stay all actions on our client pending the hearing and determination of the suit.
“In any event, we are of the firm opinion that the House of Representatives lacks the vires to exercise its oversight functions pursuant to Sections 88 and 89 of the Constitution over our client as being stretched in your summons.
“The powers donated to the National Assembly in Sections 88 and 89 of the Constitution only relate to matters on which they exercise their powers of appropriation. Our client is a private entity without government funding.
“We are also in doubt that the National Assembly has the vires to investigate criminality of the nature inventoried in the subject under any law in Nigeria.
“We, therefore, urge the Committee to stay all actions on this purported hearing pending the hearing and determination of the suit filed by our client; not to take actions that would be contemptuous and force a fait accompli on the court.”

Globacom’s Glo 1 celebrates eight years of “uninterrupted service”

0

Globacom’s Glo 1 submarine cable has reached a significant milestone, celebrating eight years of flawless operation.

This is as the company boasted that the recent undersea cable disruption which affected network providers in Nigeria and some other neighbouring countries did not affect them.

Since 2016, Glo 1 has provided seamless internet connectivity, ensuring that both personal and business users enjoy uninterrupted service and high-speed access, the company said in a statement.

Glo 1 is the international submarine cable owned by Globacom.

“Since its launch, Glo 1 has provided continuous connectivity for both individual and corporate customers, ensuring reliable internet access without any downtime,” a Friday statement read.

This statement was titled, “Glo 1 boosts capacity for enhanced service delivery.”

It read, “It will be recalled that even in March this year when most submarine cables in Nigeria and West Africa experienced cuts which caused widespread internet disruptions, Glo 1 remained unaffected throughout the period and was running as usual.

“Glo 1-powered financial institutions, internet service providers, and data consumers all carried on with business as usual.

“Industry observers were of the view that Glo 1 International Submarine Cable’s resilient construction and durability were the reasons the damage did not compromise the cable.”

According to a statement released by the company, the Glo1 submarine fiber cable infrastructure has also been upgraded to ensure maximum utilization and enhanced service delivery.

“Glo 1 connects directly to London with the lowest latency, which refers to the length of time it takes for data to travel from one point to another across a network.

“This guarantees ultra-fast and reliable internet connectivity.

“The Glo 1 capacity boost effectively compliments the ongoing technical expansions and upgrades of Glo network infrastructure to ensure unique calling and browsing experience on the Glo network,” it further read.

Also, the facility stressed that it offers tailored services to meet the needs of various sectors, including oil and gas, manufacturing, government, education, and medical institutions.

“The cable facilitates teleconferencing, distance learning, disaster recovery and telemedicine, among several other benefits for the African people” the company added.

Globacom owns the entire end-to-end architecture of Glo 1, including access systems, the national fiber-optic backbone, the international cable systems, International gateways and data centre services.

The company’s presence in several countries and its fibre optic networks entail that it can offer last-mile and domestic long-haul services to Glo 1 customers.

Reps summon EFCC chairman over budgetary allocation

0

The House of Representatives Committee on Financial Crimes has summoned the Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), Ola Olukoyede, over budgetary allocation to the commission.
He will appear before the committee with his management team on July 30 to answer questions about the commission’s budget performance and challenges.
The committee chairman, Obinna Onwusibe, gave the directive during an oversight of the commission’s office on Friday in Abuja.
The committee visited the EFCC headquarters on Friday after communicating with the commission and agreed on a date for an oversight visit.
After the members were denied access to the commission’s complex, they headed back to their bus and returned to the National Assembly.
The lawmakers were later told that the chairman was called for an emergency development at the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN).
Onwusibe in his reaction condemned the denial of the committee members access to the EFCC complex.
He said: “In performing our constitutional functions we had written to the EFCC for this oversight visit.
“The latest letter to EFCC was last week and we all agreed that the oversight will take place today (Friday).
“The essence of the oversight is for the committee to know the budget performance of the EFCC as appropriated by this national assembly.
“That was exactly why we went and also saw other things, including the challenges being faced by the EFCC.”

August 1: Coalition of youth groups withdraw from planned protest in Adamawa

0

A coalition of 24 youth groups in Adamawa State has announced its withdrawal from the planned nationwide protest.
The Coalition, Adamawa Activists Unite, said the groups have resolved to opt out of the protest because it is unclear who the national leaders of the protest are and because the government has responded and has promised to address the salient issues.
The coalition which addressed a news briefing in Yola Friday afternoon, also expressed fear that the protest might degenerate into chaos.
Convener of the coalition, Ahmed Aliyu, who read out the text of the briefing, stressed that the group’s perceived lack of clear leadership, “specifically absence of identified national protest leaders, and direction of the planned protest.”
Aliyu added, “The protest is withdrawn due to safety concerns, potential hijacking and assurance from the authorities to address concerns and implement reforms.”
The groups, however, made some demands, including the implementation of effective measures for the safety and security of all citizens; the development and implementation of policies to alleviate poverty and promote economic prosperity, investment in the revitalisation of refineries to increase domestic production and reversal of electricity tariffs, among others.

Ethiopia declares three-day mourning as landslide kills 250

0

Ethiopia announced on Friday three days of mourning following a devastating landslide in a southern remote part of the country where more than 250 people lost their lives.

Rescuers are continuing the grim search for bodies in the tiny locality of Kencho Shacha Gozdi, while distraught survivors bury those who perished in the disaster, the deadliest landslide on record in the Horn of Africa nation.

UN humanitarian agency OCHA, citing local authorities, said on Thursday that 257 people have died and warned the toll could reach 500.

“The House of Peoples’ Representatives has announced a three-day national mourning for the people who lost their lives in the landslide accident,” Ethiopia’s parliament said, adding that it would start from Saturday.

The period of remembrance would allow “comfort to their relatives and all the people of our country,” added the statement, shared by the state-run Ethiopian Broadcasting Corporation.

The Ethiopian Disaster Risk Management Commission said earlier Friday that humanitarian aid and rehabilitation was “well under way” in the region.

It said a “structure for emergency disaster response coordination and integration” had been established, putting the number of people needing to be relocated at 6,000.

OCHA had said more than 15,000 people need to be evacuated because of the risk of further landslides, including small children and thousands of pregnant women or new mothers.

Aid had begun arriving, it said, including four trucks from the Ethiopian Red Cross Society.

Officials said most of the victims were buried when they rushed to help after a first landslide, which followed heavy rains Sunday in the area that lies about 480 kilometres (300 miles) from the capital Addis Ababa.

International offers of condolences have flooded in, including from the African Union, UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres and World Health

Organization chief Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, who is Ethiopian.

Africa’s second most populous nation is often afflicted by climate-related disasters and more than 21 million people or about 18 percent of the population rely on humanitarian aid as a result of conflict, flooding or drought.
