Reverse anti-people policies, pro-Atiku group tells Tinubu

0

A support group for former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, the Nigeria Youths for Atiku, has said President Bola Tinubu can address the nation and reverse some policies to ease the planned hunger protest threat.

The President of NYFA, Prof. Gold Emmanuel, said this in a statement signed by the group’s Director of Publicity, Mr Dare Dada, on Saturday in Lagos.

Emmanuel said that Nigerians, however, had the right to stage protests against the current socio-economic situation.

She said that the Nigerian Constitution also put an obligation on the government to protect protesters against all forms of attacks and infiltrations by hoodlums.

She said, “It is no longer news that Nigerians are presently going through the worst of times given the current economic situation in Nigeria. The government of President Bola Tinubu should address the country at this trying time, rather than shutting people up.

“This is not the practice in any advanced country where democracy reigns supreme. The reversal of all anti-people policies in Nigeria is also necessary amidst calls for a nationwide protest.”

She called on the Federal Government to respect the citizens’ rights and must listen to the people.

Emmanuel, however, urged the would-be protesters to conduct themselves peacefully without resorting to violence.

“We also admonish the President to instruct all security agencies to protect them such that no life is lost,” she said.

The NYFA boss advised the President to probe into the concerns of the Nigerian businessman and Chairman of the Dangote Group, Aliko Dangote, about oil cabals.

The professor said that President Tinubu must be desirous of bringing prosperity to its long-suffering people by taking the whistle-blowing seriously, and not with a pinch of salt.

“While still awaiting government action on this intelligence provided by Dangote, we urge the government to reinstate subsidy by reducing the price of PMS to N200.

“This is imperative since it is no longer news that the government is still paying the same subsidy.

“Since it is expected that Dangote will commence sales of refined products by August 2024, this will help the government control the price of the product, thereby alleviating the suffering of Nigerians,” Emmanuel said.

According to her, the government cannot be acting as if they are representing privileged Nigerians only.

She said, “The interests of the masses must be on the front burner, else we will get to a point where the rich will not be able to have sound sleep anymore because the poor are hungry and angry.”

Emmanuel also urged the President to instruct the Central Bank of Nigeria to reduce the MPR, currently at 26.75 per cent and provide palliatives to the real sector.

She said that the resultant effect of FX volatility had badly battered the real sector.

“The provision of safety nets and tax holidays of not less than six months to the existing manufacturing companies in Nigeria will not only assist them to regain stability but will also encourage those that have left to have a rethink.

“Keeping MPR at 26 per cent will definitely discourage borrowing. The real sector cannot sustain such strangulating interest rates.

“The CBN should also be magnanimous to reduce the Cash Reserve Ratio to at least 35 per cent to 40 per cent which currently stands at 45 per cent,” she said.

Emmanuel said that this would help commercial banks in Nigeria to have more funds to lend to both manufacturers and consumers.

She said that the NYFA had chosen to support Abubakar, while also encouraging him to give it another shot in 2027.

“This support was borne out of our belief in his 2023 manifesto, which was tailored towards solving some of the economic and political problems currently bedevilling our nation at the moment,” she stated.

EU deforestation policy endangers Nigeria’s $770m cocoa industry — Farmers

0

Cocoa farmers on Saturday raised concerns over the European Union’s plans to implement its deforestation regulation plan in December 2024.

In an open letter appealing to the EU Commission for a postponement of the European Union Deforestation Regulation, the National President of the Cocoa Farmers Association of Nigeria, Comrade Adeola Adegoke, stated that the nation’s $770 million cocoa industry would be at risk if urgent steps are not taken to resolve sustainability issues like deforestation and traceability.

According to him, Nigeria’s cocoa could be at risk if the federal government does not take the necessary legal steps to halt and remediate deforestation and develop strategies for addressing forest loss in cocoa communities through collective action.

The farmers, however, assured the EU that steps are being taken to comply with best practices.

“We have embarked on advocacy and capacity training for our cocoa farmers in the areas of ecosystem protection, focusing on the production of deforestation-free cocoa and the protection of the rights of our labourers and children.

“These training sessions were conducted in partnership with other stakeholders across the cocoa-producing communities, tagged: Cocoa Farmers Roundtable Conference,” the statement read.

“CFAN also organised the first privately driven and publicly enabled Nigerian Cocoa Summit & Award to find workable solutions to the issues affecting the cocoa industry. The Summit extensively brainstormed on the EUDR’s forthcoming implementation, living income differential, national cocoa plan, inadequate local cocoa processing, value addition and consumption, and the need for Nigeria to have a cocoa regulatory framework that will drive the industry, rather than relying on an ineffective system,,” the letter added.

The EUDR is a regulation that prohibits products from entering the EU market unless they are deforestation-free and legally produced. The Regulation applies to wood, palm oil, soy, coffee, cocoa, rubber, and cattle, as well as most of their derivatives. Under cocoa, it applies to beans, products, and chocolate.

The regulation entered into force on June 29, 2023, with an 18-month preparation period expiring on December 30, 2024, when it will fully come into effect.

However, in the open letter addressed to Janusz Wojciechowski, EU Commissioner for Agriculture, the cocoa farmers have requested the implementation deadline be postponed to December 2025 to enable better preparation by the smallholder cocoa farmers, who have been hampered by a lack of adequate information on the EUDR at their farm gate level.

“Our appeal is based on the imminent negative impact on the livelihoods of cocoa farmers if the current date is not extended by one year,” the letter read.

In the letter, they noted further that Nigeria is one of the world’s major cocoa-producing countries, contributing about 6.5 per cent to global cocoa production and accounting for 29 per cent of total agricultural exports in 2023, valued at N1.24 trillion, with an estimated value of N356.16 billion.

“This makes it imperative for the EU Commission to reconsider the need for the postponement of the EUDR by one year to enable better preparations.

“Compliance with the EUDR might push our cocoa farmers into greater poverty if the time frame is not adjusted,” they stressed.

Don’t suppress protests, CSO urges FG

The Civil Society Legislative Advocacy Centre has urged the Federal Government to set a timeframe for addressing citizens’ grievances rather than attempting to suppress protests.

Executive Director of CISLAC, Auwal Rafsanjani, on Sunday emphasised the need for decisive action on pressing issues such as inflation, unemployment, corruption, insecurity, and the erosion of institutional integrity.

He made this call in a press statement obtained by our correspondent in Gombe following the forthcoming mass action.

“Inflation, unemployment, corruption, and insecurity are critical challenges that need urgent attention.

“The integrity of our institutions is in question, and it is imperative to restore trust and confidence so that citizens can once again believe in their country,” the statement partly read.

CISLAC urged the government to safeguard the rights of protesters, highlighting that peaceful protest is a fundamental right in Nigeria.

“Protesters must be protected. This is a democratic right, and the government should ensure their safety. The protests should not be framed along religious, ethnic, and political lines; rather, the government at all levels should listen to and address the genuine concerns of the people,” Rafsanjani added.

The statement also called for local and state governments to leverage their influence to resolve issues constructively, rather than exerting undue pressure on protesters, which could provoke further unrest.

Rafsanjani’s statement added, “Addressing the issues raised is crucial. The government must set a clear timeframe for resolving these problems instead of merely attempting to halt protests or arresting those who want to protest.”

CISLAC warns against the military’s involvement in handling domestic issues, which should be the responsibility of the police and the Department of State Services (DSS).

“The military should not assume the role of the police in domestic matters. Professionalism and restraint are essential to avoid escalating tensions.”

The organisation also called on protesters to remain responsible and vigilant against individuals seeking to exploit the protests for negative purposes.

“Protesters must remain peaceful and vigilant. The police should protect them and ensure the protest does not escalate due to the actions of those with malicious intentions,” he noted.

CISLAC harped for comprehensive measures to address the issues at hand, allowing citizens to freely express their opinions on government actions.

“In a democratic setting, every individual should have the right to express their views on government performance. President Bola Tinubu, himself a product of protest, should understand and respect this right,” the statement added.

20 arrested as police, Ogun youths clash over traditional festival

0

Ikenne town in Ikenne Local Government area of Ogun State was embroiled in crisis on Saturday as some youths insisted on going ahead to celebrate the annual Oro festival despite the ban by the state government.

According Online gathered that the crisis had been building for some days now, with the youth holding protests in the town and insisting that they would celebrate the annual festival with or without the approval of the government.

The crisis was said to have, however, taken a new dimension on Saturday morning as the youth came out and began burning tyres across the major roads in the town, insisting that the Oro festival would be celebrated

This was said to have led to a face-off with the police, who had been monitoring the situation to ensure that there was no breakdown of law and order.

Some of the viral videos posted on social media showed flames of fire billowing from burnt tyres in some places in the town.

A voice accompanying the video had said, “Ikenne on fire, and this is because the youth are being prevented from celebrating Oro festival”.

An anonymous source told our crrespondent that the youth had for days been expressing their bitterness over the cancellation of the festival, just as it occurred last year.

The source said, “It has been an ongoing crisis for some time now, and it is because the town is polarised over the kingship tussle.

“I guess the government is mindful of the fragile peace in the town and wouldn’t want anyone to hide under one festival to unleash mayhem and so it said that the festival should not be celebrated just like what happened last year.

“Some youths are, however, hellbent on celebrating the festival, and this is what causes the face-off with the police”.

The state Commissioner of Police, Abiodun Alamutu confirmed the incident to our correspondent.

The CP said the state command is on top of the situation, and it has arrested 20 suspects and impounded two vehicles in connection with the pandemonium.

Alamutu said, “We are very much aware of the situation, it is a fallout of the longstanding kingship crisis in the town, and recently, the court dismissed the one currently on the throne, but the judgment had been appealed.

“So based on the tense atmosphere, the local government, which is the consenting authority for the festival, said that it should not be celebrated so that it won’t lead to any breach of peace. We did the same thing last year, but some youths who are being misguided decided they must have their way.

“We have arrested 20 of them, impounded two vehicles, and everyone will soon be brought to the state command at Eleweran, Abeokuta, to answer for their misdeeds.”

Protest: Shehu Sani reveals only way organisers will submit details to police

0

Former Nigerian Senator and activist, Shehu Sani has said the organisers of the planned August 1-10 hardship protest will submit their details to the Nigeria Police Force when they have been hypnotized or charmed.
Sani disclosed this in a statement on his X account on Saturday in reaction to the condition given by Nigeria Police to intended protesters.
Recall that the Inspector General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun told the planners of the August 1–10 protests to submit their details to the commissioners of police in their respective states.
The IGP’s comment comes after a human rights activist, Ebun-Olu Adegboruwa, standing as solicitor for the planned protesters, requested that the police and Department of State Services, DSS, provide security.
Reacting to the development, Sani who led protests during the Military era in Nigeria, stressed that it is only when protesters have been charmed that they will provide their details to the police.
“The only way a protester can submit his name and address to the police is when he is charmed or ‘jazzed’ by a priest or a native doctor”, he said.
TVN reports that the planned August 1 protest had been a subject of debate in Nigeria’s public space.
The organizers of the protest gave the worsening economic hardship as justification for their agitation.

Nigerian boxer, Ogunsemilore, fails dope test

0

Nigerian lightweight boxer, Cynthia Ogunsemilore, has been provisionally suspended after testing positive for a banned substance on Saturday ahead of her opening fight at the Paris Olympics.

The International Testing Agency said on Saturday that the 2022 Commonwealth Games bronze medallist and African Games champion tested positive for furosemide, a diuretic on the World Anti-Doping Agency’s prohibited list, in an out-of-competition doping control collected on Thursday.

“The athlete has been informed of the case and has been provisionally suspended until the resolution of the matter in line with the World Anti-Doping Code and the International Olympic Committee Anti-Doping Rules,” the ITA said on their website.

The suspension means Ogunsemilore is barred from competing, training, coaching, or participating in any activity during the Paris 2024 Olympics.

She had been scheduled to face Taiwan’s Wu Shih Yi in a round of 16 bout on Tuesday.

The ITA stated that Ogunsemilore has the right to challenge the provisional suspension before the Court of Arbitration for Sport – Anti-Doping Division and request analysis of her B-sample.

The development has further depleted Nigeria’s boxing team, leaving only Adam Olaore as the sole medal hopeful for the nation in the ring.

Dolapo Omole, the third Nigerian who qualified for the Olympics in boxing, also had to withdraw days before the Games due to injury.

Olaore will face Aibeck Oralbay of Kazakhstan on Sunday (today) at 10:48 am in the first preliminary round as he begins his quest for medals.

Boxing has historically been one of Nigeria’s strongest Olympic sports, but the country has seen declining fortunes in recent editions. Nigeria last won a medal in boxing at the Atlanta 96 Olympics.

Hardship: Youth Forum kicks against proposed protest

0

The National Youth Stakeholders Forum, NYSF, a coalition of youth groups in Nigeria, has kicked against the proposed nationwide protests against hardship and bad governance in the country.
The Forum said it elected to declare its non participation in the proposed protest in the greater interest of sustaining the political stability of the country.
It instead demanded that President Bola Tinubu commence immediate restoration of the functionality of the country’s four refineries to full operational capacity.
The decision was announced by Chinazam Ike, Vice Chairman, at a press conference in Abuja on Saturday, warning there were evidence that the protest could be hijacked by politicians with ulterior motives.
Ike said although the group wholly subscribe to the instrumentality of a peaceful protest geared towards the actualization of courses that are for the greater good of the country, it’s opposed to the consequent weaponization of protest to initiate political instability.
He said it is unpatriotic to go ahead and provide an enabling environment for desperate politicians to take advantage of the hardship in the country to concoct instability.
He said, “We strongly agree with the spirit and the letter of holding government accountable, airing views or even expressing displeasures, these are not just fundamentals of a democracy or free society, they are the very foundations upon which the founding fathers of our nation built it.
“As young people we wholly subscribe to the instrumentalities of a peaceful protest geared towards the actualization of
courses that are in the greater good of our dear Nation.
“However, the consequent weaponization of protest to initiate political instability is what we are averse with.
“We have seen many stories around the African countries where peaceful protests have led to peaceful resolution of social issues, we have equally seen situations where nations crumble at the instance that peaceful protests become weaponized by desperate politicians to create political instability, usurp power of truncate
the very democracy that guaranteed the right and liberties of protests in the first place.
“We have strong reasons to believe that the proposed protests favour the latter, we have confidential and classified information that has alluded to the interference of the proposed protest by politicians who see it as a means of settling their political scores.
“Therefore, we are re-addressing our protests to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu who has come out to appeal to us the youth to be careful not to put down this very nation that holds the promise of our bright future.
“In this regard we are streamlining our demand to be the immediate restoration of the functionality of our four refineries to full operational capacity to guarantee the availability, affordability and sustainability of fuel which is the power source of the economy.”
TVN reports that some Nigerians are mobilising for nationwide protest slated for August 1 to August 10, 2024.
Tagged #EndBadGovernace, organisers of the protest have lamented about widespread hunger and inflation in the country.

Please, don’t remove my daughter’s breast,’ UK father begs transgender surgeon

0

A distressed father has pleaded with top UK plastic surgeon, Mohsen El Gammal, to refrain from performing a transgender surgery on his 20-year-old daughter, fearing the procedure would ruin her life.

In a scathing letter, the father cautioned the surgeon that his daughter had a history of depression, self-harm and starving herself before becoming involved with the “trans cult.”

The father, who requested anonymity to safeguard his daughter’s privacy, shared the letter with The Mail on Sunday.

The letter read, “Ultimately, my daughter is a depressive. She sought the highs that came from cutting herself; from starving herself; from being taken for a boy; from taking testosterone; and now from having her breasts removed.

“She needs to learn that life is not one long adrenaline buzz – that happiness is a more moderate feeling, comes from within and derives from finding place and purpose in life.

“You are fuelling her problem. Not helping to resolve it.

“Please do not remove my daughter’s breasts. You will, in one day – a day you will quickly forget – ruin her life forever.”

The father stated that the doctor would rob his daughter of the opportunity to breastfeed her future children and limit her potential partners in life.

He emphasised that the surgery would cause her irreversible harm.

He added, “She is 20 years old. Which of us knew at 20 what we would know or think at 30? Which of us understood ourselves in the way we do at 60?

“Which of us did not do things we almost immediately regretted? If you do choose to operate, perhaps you will take the time while she is anaesthetised to look at the extensive scarring on her arms and legs.

“These are the scars of the self-harming craze she participated in during her mid-teens. This was before she got into starving herself. All this before she started participating in the trans cult.”

He told The Mail that he has never received an acknowledgment for the letter, which he sent in May to the private Cadogan Clinic in Chelsea, west London.

Despite her father’s emotional plea, The Mail reports that his 20-year-old daughter is understood to have undergone a double mastectomy surgery last month, a procedure that involved the removal of both breasts.

When contacted, the clinic informed The Mail that it could not comment on family disagreements.

The release of this letter follows a report by According Online, which highlighted that the current world’s richest man, Elon Musk, shared that his son Xavier, now known as Vivian, underwent a gender transition during the pandemic after receiving prescribed medication.

According to El Gammal’s website, he is a Consultant Breast and Oncoplastic Surgeon specialising in both breast cancer treatment and cosmetic breast procedures.

The Mail reports that he boasts of carrying out 1,000 of such operations.

NSCDC beefs up security ahead planned protest

0

The Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), has deployed personnel to safeguard all critical national assets and infrastructure ahead of the planned nationwide protest.
This was contained in a press statement signed by the spokesman of the Jigawa State Command, ASC. Badruddeen Tijjani Mahmud issued to TVN.
He said the state commandant, Muhammad Danjuma directed all the Area Commanders and Divisional officers to engage all critical stakeholders in their Area of Responsibility (AoR) with a view to creating awareness on the implications of what the protest might cause.
Commandant Danjuma emphasised the importance of maintaining peace and stability, urging the youth to engage in sober reflections on the current security situation in Jigawa State.
According to him, “We recognise the right to peaceful protest as a fundamental democratic principle.
“However, the protection of our state’s vital assets and infrastructure is paramount. We have increased our vigilance and readiness to ensure the safety and security of all residents and properties.”
He said the command was coordinating with other security agencies to provide a robust security presence at key locations.
The state Commandant said the aim was to prevent any potential disruptions and ensure that the planned protest proceeded without incident.
“We urge the youth and all citizens of Jigawa State to consider the broader implications of their actions,” he stated.
