Lagos youths reject planned protest, allege political motives

0

Lagos indigenous youths, under the Lagos Indigenous Youth Network, have voiced their opposition to the planned hunger protest slated for August 1, to 10 2024, stating they are unwilling to witness a repeat of the #EndSARS destruction in the state.

At a press conference held on Sunday, youth leaders from the five divisions of the state gathered at the statue of the three Wise Men in Ikeja, the state capital, to express their concerns, asserting that the protest appears to have political motivations rather than genuine concern for the public interest.

A leader in LIYN Mobolaji Ogunlende, speaking on behalf of the group, highlighted that intelligence reports suggest that the protest is politically driven.

“We are not against citizens constructively engaging their leaders when necessary.

“However, when such engagement turns into a platform for tension and warmongering, potentially aimed at settling political scores, it is time to exercise caution. This is what we are doing today,” Ogunlende said.

He further emphasised that the protest does not align with the interests of peace-loving and hardworking Lagosians.

“We do not support it. We say no to any protest in whatever guise or disguise. We are coming together to defend #OurLagos against any possible destruction by agents of violence masquerading as supporters of the people. Their only interest is their selfish interest,” Ogunlende stated.

The group called on all Lagosians, particularly parents, to discourage their children from participating in the protest.

“It is not a wise thing to do,” Ogunlende warned.

In a final appeal, the youths urged those behind the protest to reconsider their actions, asserting, “Lagos is working, and we stand with our dear President Bola Ahmed Tinubu. He will address all grievances and ensure that all is well in our dear country, Nigeria.”

According to him, though the citizens have the right to protest there is no justification for Lagos State to be the focal point of such politically motivated protest aimed at destroying property.

He said the Lagos State Government should be encouraged to remain the pacesetter in the country, saying the state is paying above the minimum wage and this can be verified.

“Lagos does not owe workers Salaries. Lagos does not owe Pensioners. The only state to have cleared all pension backlog.

“Lagos does not discriminate between indigenes and non-indigenes. Its hospitality is second to none. Lagos provides free healthcare to expectant women.

“Lagos provides subsidised education to all residents, regardless of ethnicity,” he said.

LH Telecommunication acquires 95% stake in 9mobile

LH Telecoms Nigeria, a subsidiary of Light House Capital, has acquired a majority stake in Emerging Markets Telecommunication Services Limited, the parent company of 9mobile.

According to a statement on Sunday by the company, the acquisition, approved by the Nigerian Communications Commission and the Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Commission, allows a new board to take over the struggling telecom operator.

Although the deal’s financial terms were not disclosed, the company indicated that the takeover is subject to regulatory approvals.

“The investment, approved by the African Export-Import Bank (AFREXIM), the senior lender to 9mobile in May 2023, has resulted in a change in control of 9mobile in favour of the new investor by the issuance of new shares amounting to 95.5 per cent of 9mobile to the new investor in consideration for the injection of fresh capital into the company,” the board said.

The new ownership structure is expected to bring stability and fresh investment to the company, enabling it to compete more effectively in Nigeria’s highly competitive telecom market.

The new board will be chaired by Thomas Etuh, with Nahim Ibraheem and Femi Edun joining as new members.

Additionally, the UK firm has nominated diverse individuals to the board, including a former senator, Daisy Danjuma, Michael Ikpoki, Ibrahim Puri, Gloria Danjuma, and Emmanuel Etuh.

Obafemi Banigbe was appointed the Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer to lead the company through its transition phase and drive its recovery.

The new CEO, Banigbe, whose appointment was previously announced a few weeks ago, is expected to bring his extensive experience at the C-suite level and a profound understanding of the African business landscape.

9mobile, formerly known as Etisalat Nigeria, was acquired by Teleology Holdings with high hopes of turning it around but has continued to struggle in the Nigerian market.

The operator has faced customer attrition, losing subscribers from its peak of 22 million in October 2016 to just over 15 million in November 2018.

Six years later, the operator trails behind with 11.7 million voice subscribers and 3.3 million internet users, according to the National Bureau of Statistics Telecoms Data released early this month.

Lagos considers smart bins to curb indiscriminate waste disposal

0

As the Lagos State Government moves to intensify efforts towards its monthly sanitation awareness programme, it has hinted plans to introduce smart waste bins for every tenement in the state.

A statement on Sunday by the Director, Public Affairs, Ministry of Environment, Mr. Kunle Adeshina, mentioned the Special Adviser to the Lagos State Governor on Environment, Olakunle Rotimi-Akodu, gave the hint when he led other state officials during the ongoing Weekly Sanitation Awareness and cleaning exercise held at Ajeromi Local Government.

He added that indiscriminate waste disposal is a major contributor to prevalence of communicable diseases.

Akodu who was accompanied by the Permanent Secretary, Office of Environmental Services, Mr Gaji Omobolaji and Permanent Secretary, Office of Drainage Services Olakunle Adegbite said the issue of a cleaner environment is a serious issue that requires the collective effort of Government and the Citizens.

The statement said, “Akodu said the Smart Bin had become neccesary to monitor the activities of PSP operators as well as the refuse disposal rate of Lagosians, appealing to residents and market leaders in the area to make clean environment a priority as they go about their daily business activities.

“He reiterated that the team is embarking on the weekly exercise to encourage the citizenry to have a changed mindset and imbibe the culture of cleanliness towards the environment.

“He added that from the stretch of Marine beach and Mobil road towards Ajegunle boundary to Alayabiagba market, the roadside and road median were filled with heaps of wastes adding that the corpse of a baby was found on the roadside during the exercise, saying that now is the time for everyone to desist from the unwholesome act against the environment.”

He stated that reports gathered from the weekly Community Sanitation Exercise / Advocacy campaign has revealed that majority of the people are yearning for the return of the Monthly Environmental Sanitation Exercise across the state.

The Managing Director, Lagos State Waste Management Authority, Dr. Muyiwa Gbadegbesin explained that the State Government would soon role out Smart Bins with notifications for all houses, stressing that the chips attached to the bins would notify LAWMA when the PSP Operators fail to pick up wastes at the appropriate time.

He said a safe, clean and sustainable environment is the function of all residents and not the government alone adding that everyone must make good sanitation practices a way of life and support support the effort of the government.

“In their responses, a cross-section of the community leaders including the Baale, Babaloja of Ajeromi Ifelodun and CDC Chairman present all appealed to the State Government to reconsider the introduction of monthly sanitation exercise.

“They claimed that in the recent past most markets and areas had waste police which prevented littering, adding more people need to be enlisted to become LAWMA policemen in our neighbourhoods.

“The Special Adviser was also accompanied by the Managing Director LAWMA, Dr Muyiwa Gbadegesin; General Manager LASPARK, Mrs. Toun Popoola; KAI Marshal, Major Olatunbosun Cole (Rtd); General Manager, LASWMO, Engr. Adefemi Afolabi and some Directors from the ministry.

“The team visited Mobil Road/ Apapa / Ajeromi / Ajegunle boundary and Alayabiagba market,” the statement concluded.

No one can deny Nigerians right to protest

0

The Presidency on Sunday said Nigerians reserve the right to peaceful protest.

It also said President Bola Tinubu’s administration is poised to serve Nigerians, not “dominate” them.

Special Adviser to the President on Media and Publicity, Ajuri Ngelale, who spoke during a TVC interview programme, Politics on Sunday with Femi Akande, was addressing concerns about the government’s stance on peaceful protests planned for August 1-10.

He said, “Let me be clear: we are not in office to dominate our people; we are here to serve them”.

He emphasised that no organ of the administration “has the authority” to prevent Nigerians from protesting.

“No one in our administration has the authority to deny Nigerians their right to peaceful protest,” Ngelale said, acknowledging fears surrounding a potential hijack of the protests similar to the #EndSARS movement of 2020.

He also reassured citizens of Tinubu’s commitment to putting Nigeria on a sound economic footing, despite the liabilities inherited from the past administration.

Ngelale reasoned that though Nigerians are facing intense economic pressures, the administration is working in the short, medium and long terms to improve living standards.

However, he sued for patience saying development takes time and there is no magic wand to solve the country’s problems overnight.

The presidential spokesperson highlighted the FG efforts including single-digit interest rate credit facilities for over one million MSMEs, the reconstruction of seaports and roads nationwide, the Student Loan Scheme, the Consumer Credit Program, and the increase in the national minimum wage, stressing that some of these efforts may take time to yield tangible results.

“Right now you have over 300 roadways across all states of the Federation being reconstructed and that is not including the super-highway from Lagos to Calabar that’s under construction, the Badagry to Sokoto highway and many others. Not to talk of $1bn being right now expended on seaport reconstruction across the eastern and western seaports.

“There are several things that are going on now that create direct employment and set us up for a prosperous future where our infrastructure actually supports the foreign direct investment drive that this President is aggressively pursuing.

“But it is also incumbent upon our administration, not just at the federal level, but obviously incumbent on the state and local levels, to ensure that whatever policies are being implemented to create fiscal space for households, that these things are actually done, that we don’t have any kind of administrative incompetence, that we don’t have unnecessary bureaucratic delays,” he explained.

Citing several social investment programmes already in motion, Ngelale argued, “There’s no question about the fact that there is a lot of work that has to be done and there’s a lot of work that is being done, some of which is not going to have the bells and whistles of TV cameras and nobody’s going to be sitting in the office, for example of the CBN Governor, as he’s doing his paperwork which leads to the full payoff of $7bn worth of foreign exchange backlog.

“It has a massive impact on investor confidence, it has massive impact on the medium term kind of monetary space in the country, but that’s not something that people are necessarily going to be dancing and celebrating about. So there’s a lot going on.”

He described a recent Supreme Court judgment that granted local government councils fiscal autonomy as “restructuring in practice,” adding, “That is the kind of thing that Nigerians would need to give some time to see what the difference actually will translate into in terms of the impact on their livelihoods.”

Operatives of the Plateau State Police Command have arrested a man for allegedly mobilising Nigerians on TikTok to join the planned nationwide protest against hardship.

The man, who identifies as Dam-Mallam68 on TikTok, was accused of making an inciting video before he was trailed and arrested by the police.

The spokesperson for the Plateau State Police Command, Alabo Alfred, who confirmed the arrest in a statement on Sunday night, said, “Following the release of a TikTok video that occupied the social media space, stimulating violence in connection with the planned nationwide protest, the Plateau State Police Command has trailed and arrested the author of the inciting video.

“On 27/07/2024, the attention of the Command was drawn to the video putatively emanating from a TikTok account, identified as “Dam-Mallam68.

“The suspect in the video was seen assertively inciting the public to attack security operatives and burn down critical state and private infrastructures in Plateau State as part of the activities for the protest.”

Alfred stated that based on the strength of the information, the Plateau State Commissioner of Police, Emmanuel Adesina, activated the Police Command’s strategic resources to identify and apprehend the individuals behind the malicious video.

He said, “Consequently, on 28/07/2024 around 11:30 AM, one Suleiman Yakubu (male, aged 34 years) of Jos North, Plateau State who appeared in the viral video was picked at Ahmadu Bello Way, Jos through an impeccable informant.

“While in our custody, the suspect confessed to being the one in the video. Meanwhile, an investigation is still ongoing.

“In view of the above, the Commissioner of Police wishes to state that the Police will intensely resist any attempt by mischief makers to plunge the State into chaos. He stressed the need for peace to remain untempered in the State amidst the before, during and after the protest.

“The Plateau State Commissioner of Police also urges the good people of Plateau State to be law abiding and refrain from making inciting comments that will threaten peace and security in the State.”

The statement urged residents of the state to report any suspicious activities to the police command and report any officer found to engage in any form of misconduct in the state.

SEC seeks public-private partnerships to finance green economy

0

The Securities and Exchange Commission has called for public-private partnerships to drive Nigeria’s transition to a green economy.

In a statement made available to our correspondent on Sunday, the Director-General of SEC, Emomotimi Agama, stated that this collaborative approach aims to diversify the economy, create jobs, and reduce dependence on fossil fuels.

Agama emphasised, “The green economy presents opportunities for job creation, particularly in renewable energy, sustainable agriculture, and green technology. The International Renewable Energy Agency estimates that renewable energy could create up to 52,000 direct and indirect jobs in Nigeria by 2030. This shift can stimulate innovation, fostering new industries and business models that contribute to economic growth.”

He stressed that government and private sector involvement are crucial noting the potential public health benefits, stating, “Green economy policies can improve public health by reducing pollution and promoting cleaner technologies. ”

He noted that each of Nigeria’s six geopolitical zones faces unique climate challenges, requiring tailored policies and strategies.

“The backbone of our efforts must be the development of robust policies and strategies. The green economy resonates with nature. Nigeria, with its diverse landscapes from deserts to marine environments, is uniquely positioned to lead in this area,” he remarked.

Highlighting the paradox of Nigeria’s abundant natural resources amid environmental degradation, Agama added, “Our local industries, such as the fishing sector, now rely heavily on frozen fish due to pollution. It’s a paradox that we suffer amid plenty. We must harness our opportunities, such as turning waste materials into valuable products.”

He also called for education and careers in renewable energy and green technology.

“Embracing green finance remains a critical approach to addressing these challenges. It is crucial to involve key stakeholders in conversations that promote green finance. We are at a pivotal moment where we can shape the future of our investment practices to align with environmental, social, and governance principles,” he stated.

He assured that the SEC would continue to support efforts to build momentum for a green economy.

“We will deliver coordinated and coherent policy advice, capacity building, and regulatory support to leverage actions across a broad spectrum of sectors. Transitioning to a green economy is crucial for the sustainable development of Nigeria,” he concluded.

Edem joins Aruna, Omotayo on way out

0

Offiong Edem on Sunday became the third Nigerian to crash out of the table tennis event at the Paris 2024 Olympics, following a 4-0 defeat to Brazil’s Bruna Takahashi in the women’s singles Round of 64.

Edem’s exit came on the heels of Quadri Aruna and Olajide Omotayo’s losses on Saturday, both of whom were sent packing from the competition.

While Aruna and Omotayo managed to clinch at least one set in their encounters, Takahashi proved too formidable for Edem, securing a straight-sets victory: 11-8, 11-4, 13-11, 12-10.

Omotayo had kick-started Nigeria’s table tennis exit streak with a 4-1 loss to Iran’s Noshad Alamiyan, despite claiming the first set.

Aruna’s ouster was even more dramatic as he squandered a 3-0 lead to suffer a 4-3 defeat at the hands of 19-year-old Romanian Eduard Ionescu.

Nigeria’s last hope in the table tennis event, Fatimo Bello, is set to face Jia Nan Yuan on Monday in the women’s singles Round of 64 at her maiden Olympics appearance.

Edem’s elimination marked the third setback for Nigeria in Sunday’s competitions, following the Super Falcons’ 1-0 loss to world champions Spain and Adam Olaore’s defeat in the boxing heavyweight round of 16 to Kazakhstan’s Aibek Oralbay.

National protest may be counterproductive – Enugu ex-commissioner, Nnam

0

Former Commissioner for Lands and Urban Development in Enugu State, Dr Victor Nnam, has called on Nigerian youths to exercise patience and allow the Federal Government time to address the country’s economic challenges.
Addressing Igbo youths on Saturday in Enugu, the ex-commissioner cautioned that the planned nationwide protest could be counterproductive and was not in the best interest of the nation.
He acknowledged the frustrations and hardships faced by many Nigerians due to the economic downturn, but stressed that meaningful change takes time and requires strategic planning and execution by the government.
“I understand the pain and suffering that many of our young people are experiencing. However, we must recognize that fixing the economy is a complex task that cannot be achieved overnight,” he stated.
Highlighting recent efforts by the Federal Government to stabilize the economy, the former commissioner noted that various policies and reforms were being implemented to spur growth and create jobs.
He urged youths to support the initiatives and give the government a fair chance to deliver on its promises.
“While protests are a democratic right and a way to express dissatisfaction, they often lead to unintended consequences such as violence, property damage, and further economic disruption. At this critical juncture, what we need is unity and constructive engagement, not actions that could destabilize our efforts to rebuild,” he added.
The senior lecturer also called on youth leaders and civil society organizations to channel their energies into dialogue and collaboration with the government.
“Let us come together to propose viable solutions and work hand in hand with our leaders to ensure a brighter future for all Nigerians,” he urged.
He emphasized the importance of patience and resilience, reminding the youth that economic recovery is a gradual process.
“We must remain hopeful and steadfast. The road to recovery may be long, but with collective effort and perseverance, we can overcome these challenges and achieve the prosperous Nigeria we all desire.”
