Activist, Omoyele Sowore on Monday said the Department of State Services, DSS, is doing a fantastic job in mobilizing Nigerians for the August 1 #EndBadGovernanceInNigeria protest.
Sowore was reacting to the decision of the DSS to detain one of the August 1 protest mobilizers known as @Mallam_jabeer.
An X user named @n6oflife6 had posted: “I just got a call from @Mallam_jabeer that he has been detained by the DSS. This young man is Peaceful & has been law-abiding over his protest arrangements. Arresting him before August 1 makes no Sense. Efforts are being made to get him released. Nigeria we Hail Thee.”
Reacting, Sowore wrote: “The @OfficialDSSNG is doing a fantastic job mobilizing for the #EndBadGovernanceInNigeria revolt. #FreeJabirNow.”
Nigerians plan to file out on August 1 to protest against the hardship and suffering they are experiencing under President Bola Tinubu’s administration.
Tinubu had urged Nigerians to shelve the planned protest and give him time to turn the economy around.

Revised condition of service to enhance efficiency – DHQ
The Defence Headquarters has said the draft Harmonised Terms and Conditions of Service for military officers is aimed at enhancing efficiency and the general welfare of the members of the armed forces.
The Acting Director of Defence Information, Brigadier General Tukur Gusau, made this known in a statement on Monday in Abuja in response to an online report (Not The According) claiming that the HTACOS for military officers was causing tension in the services.
The report suggested that many officers were planning to leave the service due to unfavourable terms contained in the draft document.
However, Gusau said the draft document also focused on the effective discharge of the constitutional mandate of the military, considering its current engagement in addressing multiple security challenges across the nation and beyond.
He stated that it would be counterproductive to target or retard the growth or progression of any category of officers in the armed forces, as suggested by the report.
The statement read, “For the avoidance of doubt, the current HTACOS was signed by then President Muhammadu Buhari in 2017 and is to be reviewed every five years.
“The current leadership of the armed forces has kick-started the process of reviewing the 2017 HTACOS, which is long overdue. The committee of officers involved in the review comprises members from the 3 services and across different professions in the armed forces.
“As it stands, the draft is actually intended to be refined further by inputs from stakeholders.
“The DHQ seizes this opportunity to call on all Nigerians, particularly members of the armed forces, to disregard such publications and revert to the proper channels of communication as laid down by the military.”

Protest: HURIWA accuses Nigerian Govt of spreading panic, tension
The Human Rights Writers Association of Nigeria, HURIWA, has accused the Federal Government of creating panic and igniting tension in the public space ahead of the planned nationwide protest.
HURIWA urged Federal Government officials to provide good leadership devoid of peddling cheap, unsubstantiated claims and false intelligence about the decision by some aggrieved Nigerians to stage peaceful protests against bad governance and unprecedented corruption and hunger in the country.
The association asked President Bola Tinubu to call his appointees to order, and direct them to stop the circulation of cheap lies that are orchestrating panic and tension amongst members of the public.
“The fear by the central and state governments about the imminent nationwide protests by some aggrieved Nigerians said to be commencing on August 1st, has made several government officials at both the federal and sub-national levels to continuously stoke on social tensions through all kinds of statements and claims that are absolutely unscientific and totally unacceptable,” says HURIWA in a statement signed by Comrade Emmanuel Onwubiko, its national coordinator.
HURIWA’s statement is coming after the Minister of State for Youth Development, Olawande Ayodele, urged Nigerian youths not to allow contents they see on social media push them into setting the country ablaze.
He made the appeal when the Renewed Hope Ambassadors of Nigeria, led by veteran Nollywood actor, Zack Orji, paid him a courtesy visit in Abuja.
According to the minister, most of the contents on social media are lies being peddled by politicians to giv Tinubu’s administration a bad name.
HURIWA said, “The persistent dissemination of misinformation by government officials aimed at demonising the constitutionally guaranteed fundamental freedoms to hold peaceful demonstrations when the people are aggrieved about bad governance in the country, has contributed to the heightened state of fear, apprehensions and panic by Nigerians who expect that government officials ought to play the role of stabilising and good forces rather that agents of misinformation, peddling of false information and unsubstantiated intelligence.”
It added that the claim by Ayodele that people who are against the government are circulating false information using the social media, is not totally correct because even the publicly funded National Bureau of Statistics had officially designated Nigeria as the poverty capital of the World with well over 133 million people who are multidimensionally poor.
The statement added, “Is this minister of state for Youth development Mr.Olwande Ayodele residing in the outer space for him not to be aware that the costs of living crisis is factually and existentially true in Nigeria?
“Is the minister of state for Youth Development unaware that millions of Nigerians can’t afford most essential commodities including food items such as tomatoes, tubers of yams, sweet potatoes and proteins such as cow meat, goat meat and chickens because of the fact that their prices are way beyond the affordability of millions of hungry Nigerians?”

The Federal Government has said there is no longer a need for the planned nationwide hunger protests scheduled for August 1 to 10, 2024.
The Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, said this while addressing State House correspondents after the Federal Executive Council meeting on Monday presided over by President Bola Tinubu.
Idris stated that the government is already addressing some of the demands made by aggrieved Nigerians, and making efforts to make sure that food is made available.
He said, “Many of the issues that those planning the protest are putting forward are being addressed. The government is making efforts to make sure that food is made available.
“Rice has been taken to various centres across the country, and it is being sold for N40,000. This is just the beginning and necessary first step. Other efforts are underway.
“There is so much investment that is going into the agricultural sector and we believe that as we move forward, the price of food will come down.”
The minister said the president believes that the government is answering the questions being asked by the youths
He added, “The student loan is making sure that no youth that wants to go to school will be left out. By the time the CNG takes full course, the transportation issues will be resolved.”

Nigerian govt claims no more need for planned hunger protests
The Federal Government has announced that the planned nationwide hunger protests scheduled for August 1 to 10, 2024, are now unnecessary.
Mohammed Idris, the Minister of Information and National Orientation, made this statement while addressing State House correspondents following the Federal Executive Council meeting on Monday, which was chaired by President Bola Tinubu.
Idris emphasized that the government is already addressing many of the concerns raised by Nigerians and is actively working to ensure food availability. He said, “Many of the issues that those planning the protest are putting forward are being addressed. The government is making efforts to make sure that food is made available.”

Police condemn vandalism of MTN office in Lagos
The Lagos State Police Public Relations Officer, Benjamin Hundeyin, has condemned the vandalism of the MTN office in the FESTAC area of the state on Monday.
A group of aggrieved MTN subscribers, frustrated by the recent blocking of phone numbers due to non-compliance with the NIN-SIM linkage requirement, took to the streets and damaged the office fence.
In response to a viral video showing the vandalism, Hundeyin stated, “This should not be the way to go!”
“Meanwhile, the DPO FESTAC and his men responded immediately they got the report. They succeeded in restoring normalcy and are still on ground to maintain peace.”
The blockage affected numerous subscribers, leading to widespread discontent and protests at MTN offices across the nation.
Protesters expressed their disappointment and frustration at being unable to access their phone services.

Minister urges Niger Delta indigenes to shun planned protest, cites economic implications
The Minister of Niger Delta Affairs, Abubakar Momoh, has called on residents of the oil rich region to refrain from joining the planned nationwide protest.
In an interview with journalists in Port Harcourt, Momoh argued that the protest does not serve the region’s best interests and appears to be orchestrated by unknown individuals aiming to disrupt governance.
He warned that such actions could have detrimental effects on the region’s economy.
Momoh said, “I think I almost miss it, because wherever I find myself, I have always sent that message. And yesterday, even in the traditional rulers’ house and in the public field, I have made it clear that August 1st is suspected to be a date where faceless individuals want to protest.
“The entire Niger Delta should not have anything to do with it, because the people who are planning it, they are faceless.
“They are not residents in Nigeria. Most of them are outside the country.
“They want to destroy your country while they are there living in comfort zones. So we should not allow the youth of our area to have anything to do with the protests. Because the protests, you know how it starts, but you don’t know how it ends.”
Making reference to the #EndSARS protest, Momoh said, “You saw the #EndSARS in Lagos. You can see the massive destruction that was done to Lagos. If the economy of Lagos is not a very strong one, in fact, it will be very difficult for them to recover.
“And imagine, allowing such a protest to happen in places like this, and even in Port Harcourt and the Niger Delta region, who is going to lose?
“We are the ones who are going to lose. We are not as strong as Lagos. So I think, let me use this opportunity to appeal to the entire masses, particularly the traditional rulers, the youth, and the women, not to allow themselves to be deceived by anybody.
“It goes beyond Mr. President. It’s not Mr. President Tinibu that we are asking. What is being planned now is how to disrupt Nigeria, and to let you know that there is no country today, an adverse nation, that would want Nigeria to make progress.
“You recall sometimes back in 2011 or so, they would tell you that by 2015 Nigeria was going to collapse, that there would be nothing like Nigeria.
“They did every manipulation to see that Nigeria did not survive. Has Nigeria not survived? So they are surprised that a lot of progress has been made in this country.
“And we should not give them opportunity. And as the fourth asset of the ring, it is your own duty and your responsibility, in your own analysis, to continue to tell the whole world that this type of protest is not necessary, it’s irrelevant, and it will not do anybody good.
“Therefore, since I’m in Ogoni land, I want to appeal to the youth of Ogoni. They should take time to see what is being done in their respective domains.”
Some Nigerians are mobilizing for a 10-day nationwide protest from August 1 to August 10, 2024, to address concerns about widespread hunger and inflation in the country.
Though President Bola Tinubu has acknowledged that protests are a democratic right, he emphasized that his administration will not tolerate demonstrations that result in destruction of property or loss of life.

Aiyedatiwa begs Nigerians to shelve hunger protest
As the youths prepare to hold a nationwide protest across Nigeria on Thursday, the Ondo State Governor, Mr Lucky Aiyedatiwa, has appealed to them to be patient with the current administration of President Bola Tinubu.
The governor, who acknowledged the harsh economy in the country, said the economic problems were not peculiar to Nigeria and described the situation as global. He noted that the Tinubu administration was making efforts to address all the economic challenges, which only needed a little time.
The governor stated this at the inaugural general meeting of the Independent Campaign Team of the All Progressives Congress Aborigines Group in Akure, the state capital, on Monday.
Aiyedatiwa also called on parents to caution their children against joining the protest, which could be hijacked by hoodlums.
He said, “I want to implore us parents to talk to our youths. The system must run its course; it is not a one-day pronouncement that will bring prices down. All we need is to support the federal government.
“The protest will yield nothing. We need engagement on how to boost our production. We don’t need the protest in Ondo State. The economic situation is global. Today, everyone in the UK and US is complaining about the increase in prices. So, it is not peculiar to our country.
“Let us be patient with President Tinubu. He has inherited a lot of problems from the past administration and he needs a little time to put everything back in good shape. Parents, let’s talk to our youths.”
In his remarks, the chairman of the APC Aborigines Group, Ambassador Sola Iji, called on the youths to be peaceful, saying the government was taking several measures to alleviate the suffering of Nigerians.
Iji, a former Ambassador to Togo, said, “This may not be the proper time to hold the protest people are talking about. We know that people have genuine reasons to complain, but it is so sensitive at the current time that we don’t want the situation to degenerate.
“The people should be calm. Our governors are not deaf; they know that people are angry, and they have assured that the situation will be ameliorated.”
UNILORIN expels two students, rusticates three for misconduct
The University of Ilorin has disciplined five students for various misconducts on campus. Among them, two students have been expelled, while three others have been rusticated for one academic session.
According to a statement released on Monday by Kunle Akogun, the Director of Corporate Affairs at the University, the Vice Chancellor approved the expulsion and rustication following recommendations from the Students’ Disciplinary Committee on Friday, July 5, 2024.
The students who were expelled are Olayoonu Amos from the Department of Human Kinetics and Ibrahim Taoreed from the Department of Education Management.

Those rusticated for one academic session are Olabanji Toluwanimi David (Matric. OAU announces 2024 admission screening dates
Obafemi Awolowo University has officially announced the registration dates for its 2024 admission screening exercise for both UTME and Direct Entry candidates.
The university noted that prospective students who selected OAU as their first choice and achieved a UTME score of 200 or above are eligible, as well as DE candidates.
The registration period starts on Monday, August 5, 2024, and will conclude on Sunday, September 1, 2024.
A press release seen by According Online on Monday, signed by Registrar and Secretary to the Council, K.A. Bakare, was titled, “2024 Admission Screening Exercise (For UTME and Direct Entry Candidates).”
“Candidates who made Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife their first choice in the 2024 UTME and scored 200 and above, and those who applied for Direct Entry, are hereby informed that registration for the 2024 Post-Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination screening exercise will commence on Monday, 5th August and end on Sunday, September 1, 2024,” it read.
According to the statement, the screening exercise will be conducted online, and candidates must ensure that they provide accurate information and upload correct credentials to avoid automatic disqualification.
“The screening exercise will be conducted online. Applicants who provide false information or upload incorrect credentials will automatically be disqualified.
“Candidates are required to check their screening schedule on the OAU admissions portal from Tuesday, 3rd September to Saturday, 7th September 2024.
“Candidates will also be required to participate in the POST-UTME Screening on their allotted dates and times from 9th September to 13th September 2024.
“Applicants should note that the PUTME-Screening fee is two thousand naira (N2,000.00) only (excluding portal access charges),” it read.
