The former Kano State House of Assembly Speaker, Kabiru Rurum, who is currently the Chairman of the House Committee on Air Force, has challenged the Kano State Government’s decision to dissolve the Rano Emirate.
Rurum, a member representing Rano, Kibiya, and Bunkure Federal Constituency, faulted the State Government’s decision at the commissioning of the Nigerian Airforce Girls Boarding Secondary School in Rano Sunday.
Also, Rurum vehemently opposed the Kano State Government’s decision to downgrade the Rano Emirate to second-class status.
It should be recalled that Rurum, who holds the traditional title of Turakin Rano, was earlier elected on the platform of the New Nigeria Peoples Party after his defection from the All Progressives Congress in 2023.
Rurum expressed strong opposition to the dissolution, emphasizing the historical and cultural significance of the Rano Emirate.
“I want to assure every citizen of Kano South that I strongly oppose the dissolution of our Emirate,” Rurum declared. “I stand firmly with our first-class Rano Emirate, and no one can demote us to a second-class status.
“This is the position bestowed upon us by God,” he said.
Going back memory lane, he recalled the age-long traditional and cultural heritage of the people of Rano, stressing, “We are the descendants of Autan Bawo, with a rich history in Hausaland. We understand and appreciate the value and honor that God has blessed us with as the people of Rano.”
The dissolution of the Emirate followed a recent bill passed by the Kano State House of Assembly, which officially dissolved all the five Emirate councils created by former Governor Abdullahi Umar Ganduje in the state.
The legislative move, during a plenary session in July, also established new second-class Emirate councils in Rano, Gaya, and Karaye, with each supervising specific local government areas.
Prior to the dissolution, the Rano Emirate comprised 10 local governments: Rano, Kibiya, Bunkure, Kura, Tudun Wada, Doguwa, Sumaila, Takai, Garun Malam, and Bebeji.
Following the new law, the jurisdiction of the newly created second-class Emirates will be limited to their respective local government areas, signalling a restructuring of traditional institutions.
Libya’s National Oil Corporation has denied that it was in talks to supply crude oil to any refinery in Nigeria, including the Dangote refinery.
This is coming following claims by some top refinery officials that the refinery was in talks with Libya for crude supply.
But in a statement shared on its X handle on Sunday, the Libyan oil corporation denied negotiating or entering into talks regarding the crude oil supply to any Nigerian refinery.
The statement, written in Arabic, translates: “The National Oil Corporation denies that it has negotiated or entered into any talks regarding the supply of crude oil to an oil refinery in Nigeria.
“The National Oil Corporation also confirms that it is committed to its contracts with its international partners and is committed to the legal mechanism for selling Libyan oil raw materials and that it does not work with an immediate sales mechanism.
“In addition, the process of determining raw materials prices is carried out through a committee of experts and is approved by the corporation and the Ministry of Oil and Gas.”
The 650,000 barrels per day Dangote refinery has been having issues with local crude supply since it commenced operations in January.
Recently, officials of the refinery accused International Oil Companies of frustrating the refinery by refusing to supply crude or selling at a premium.
The Dangote Group has since resorted to importing feedstock from the United States and others.
On Saturday, there were allegations that the refinery was reselling its crude to other traders.
The spokesperson of the company, Tony Chiejina, had said the refinery was sourcing crude from Libya and Angola.
“Outright falsehood. We are sourcing more crude from Angola and Libya. Also, our Crude Distillation Unit is functioning perfectly well. You may wish to visit the refinery even today or tomorrow,” Chiejina told our correspondent.

The Deputy Senate President, Senator Jibrin Barau, has appealed to the organisers of the planned nationwide protest to reconsider their decision and shelve the idea so that the fragile peace in the country would not be disrupted.
Barau, who is also the first Deputy Speaker of the ECOWAS Parliament, said President Bola Tinubu is making genuine efforts to address the country’s challenges.

In a statement by his Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Ismail Mudashir, Barau urged the promoters to give the government more time to implement lofty programmes and policies of the administration as captured in the Renewed Hope Agenda for the country’s socio-economic development.
He said that since the government was inaugurated on May 29, 2023, it has diligently worked hard to restore the country’s glory and return it to the path of progress and prosperity for the benefit of all.
“As we all know, one year is not enough to address the country’s challenges for decades. Various interventions have been rolled out, and this administration is conceiving more. Short, medium and long-term measures are being put in place to tackle the challenges that have been with us for decades,” he said.
He said the signing of the North West and South East Development Commissions bills into law by President Tinubu was one of the measures to address the challenges facing all parts of the country.
Barau drew the attention of the promoters of the protest of how what started as peaceful demonstrations in Syria, Yemen, Libya, and Sudan, turned bloody and took the countries backwards.
He added, “Against this backdrop, l urge everyone to reflect deeply on the problem and reconsider the idea of a protest. There is a risk that the protest could be hijacked.
“This is our country; we have no place to go other than the Federal Republic of Nigeria bequeathed on us by our forefathers. Exercise more patience and allow for more time. We will get it right. The efforts of the new Government will yield the desired results, by the grace of God.”
The Southern Kaduna Christian Leaders Association (SKCLA) has advised youths not to participate in the planned nationwide protest but to allow for the total healing of the land after suffering several attacks in recent times.
The Chairman of the Association and Vision Pioneer of Throneroom Trust Ministry, Kafanchan, Apostle Dr. Emmanuel Nuhu Kure, made this call on the sidelines of a special Thanksgiving service for elected and appointed officers from Southern Kaduna. The event, organized by the association in collaboration with the Christian Association of Nigeria, Southern Kaduna Zone, was held on Sunday in Kafanchan.
Kure explained that although the region, like other parts of the country, is also experiencing hunger and harsh economic realities, it is unwise to join protests that might be hijacked by adversaries seeking to create crises, which could jeopardize the healing process.
He appealed to the people to give the government more time to address the decay caused by past administrations, especially now that the current government at both the federal and state levels has begun offering hope and inclusivity through appointments and project execution.

Hardship: Southern Kaduna Christian leaders warn youths against joining protest
Barely three days to the planned nationwide protests, the Kwara State Commandant of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps, NSCDC, Umar Mohammed, has issued a stern warning to those who may seek to exploit the protest for criminal activities and cause unrest in the state.
He issued the warning on Monday in a statement in Ilorin by the spokesman of the command Ayoola Michael Shola.
Umar disclosed that the command is on red alert, with robust measures in place to ensure law and order are upheld before, during, and after the protest.
He further stated that the command will not fold its hands and watch hoodlums wreak havoc, and vandalize critical national assets and infrastructure, as adequate deployment will be made across the state to ensure watertight security of life and property.
While acknowledging the citizens’ right to protest, commandant Umar, urged the youths and other concerned citizens to lawfully and peacefully express their grievances, ensuring that national security and public safety are not compromised.
He also encouraged law-abiding Kwarans to continue with their daily activities without fear, affirming that stringent measures have been employed to address the envisaged threat.

The Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps, Anambra State Command, said it has deployed 1,190 officers and men ahead of the planned nationwide protest scheduled to begin on August 1.
The Anambra State Commandant of NSCDC, Maku Olatunde, stated this in Awka, the state capital, after a meeting with other service commanders in the state.
This was disclosed in a statement by the Head, Media and Tactical Operations, Okadigbo Edwin, on Monday.
Edwin said the command remains committed and unrelenting in maintaining law and order before, during, and after the planned protest.
According to him, the deployment is in line with a marching order given to it by the Commandant General, Dr Ahmed Audi, to stand firm as the lead agency statutorily responsible for protecting critical national assets and infrastructure.
The statement said, “While 350 personnel are for the anti sit-at-home order operations on Monday, 840 personnel are to resist all forms of violent protests and lawlessness, as well as prevent vandalism of critical national assets and infrastructure.
“In line with a marching order given to us by the Commandant General, Dr Ahmed Audi, to stand firm on our core mandate as the lead agency statutorily responsible for protecting critical national assets and infrastructure.
“The Command will not remain passive or indifferent in the face of violent activities that threaten to disrupt the peaceful co-existence of all Anambra residents or destroy our National Critical Assets & Infrastructure
“Instead, we will take proactive measures to prevent and counteract such actions, ensuring the safety and security of Anambra citizens and the protection of such critical assets.”
While acknowledging the rights of citizens to protest, the NSCDC, however, called on the organisers of the protest to operate within the ambit of the law.
“Individuals contemplating illegal acts during the protest, such as tampering with government assets or infrastructure will face severe legal consequences. The public is reminded that these actions are considered serious offences.
“Additionally, disrupting social and economic activities in the state, particularly at strategic facilities like airports and hospitals, and hindering essential service providers from carrying out their duties, is strictly prohibited.
“Those who ignore these warnings will be held accountable and face the full force of the law,” the statement added.

The Honourable Minister of Education, Prof Tahir Mamman, has directed the vice chancellors of all Nigerian Universities to ensure the security and safety of staff and students.
This was made known in a statement signed by the Acting Executive Secretary National Universities Commission, Chris Maiyaki, on Monday.
According to the statement, students are mandated to remain on campus and focus on their academic pursuits so as to avoid exposure to any potential danger during the planned protests.
“The Federal Government is not unaware of the right of any Nigerian to peaceful protest, but is concerned about the safety of staff, students and university property should there be any protest action.
“Consequently, the Honourable Minister has directed that vice-chancellors of all Nigerian universities should take pro-active steps to ensure the security and safety of the university community, including staff and students.
“In addition, vice chancellors are to please issue specific statements to assure staff and students of their safety. It is also advisable that students remain on campus to please accept the renewed assurances of my highest considerations and best wishes,” the statement reads.
Protest: Minister urges students to remain on campus
French energy giant TotalEnergies said on Monday it was withdrawing from two offshore gas fields in South Africa as they did not appear economically viable.
A subsidiary of TotalEnergies owns a 45 per cent stake in a block off the country’s southern coast where the fields, Brulpadda and Luiperd, were discovered.
TotalEnergies said they could “not be turned into a commercial development as it appeared to be too challenging to economically develop and monetise these gas discoveries for the South African market.”
The block, spanning 19,000 square kilometres (7,335 square miles), is located 175km (109 miles) off the South African south coast.
Qatar Petroleum, which holds a 25 per cent interest in the block, also announced its intention to withdraw from the project, said Africa Energy Corp, a Canadian oil and gas exploration company with a 10 per cent stake through a subsidiary.
Another partner, CNR International which owns 20 per cent of the block, had announced its departure earlier in July.
Africa Energy Corp said it did not intend to withdraw from the project and noted that under a joint agreement, companies that pull out of the block would give up their stakes for free to those that stay.
The company said the gas fields were “the largest discoveries of natural gas resources in South Africa.”
It added, “If developed, it could supply a significant portion of the country’s energy needs as it seeks to transition away from coal-fired power plants.”
Environmental groups have opposed the project, warning that drilling in the deep waters would threaten the region’s biodiversity and fishermen.
