Hunger protest: ActionAid demands protesters’ safety

0

ActionAid Nigeria has called on the Federal Government to ensure the rights and safety of Nigerian youths planning a nationwide protest starting on August 1st.

The organisation emphasised the importance of citizens’ constitutional rights to peaceful assembly and protest.

ActionAid Nigeria, a non-governmental organisation working to promote social justice, human rights, and poverty eradication in Nigeria, is an affiliate of ActionAid International, a global federation of NGOs operating in over 45 countries.

In a statement on Monday, the Country Director, Andrew Mamedu, said, “We firmly support citizens’ constitutional rights to peaceful assembly and protest. Every Nigerian has the inalienable right to voice their grievances and demand accountability from their government without fear of violence or retribution.”

The statement highlighted the government’s failure to address citizens’ concerns, leading to repeated violent clampdowns on protesters.

It said, “The federal government must not allow the violent repression of peaceful protesters to continually repeat itself. Any such actions would be a severe violation of human rights and undermine the democratic principles that our nation strives to uphold.”

ActionAid Nigeria demanded that the government address the root causes of the protest, provide adequate protection for protesters, and commit to preventing violent repression.

The organisation also appealed to protesters to maintain peace and order during demonstrations.

It added, “We also enjoin citizens and politicians inclined to form anti-protest groups to respect the rights of their fellow Nigerians to peaceful assembly, and any violations of these rights must be met with the full extent of the law.”

APC chairmen plan solidarity rally, vow to defend democracy

0

The Forum of All Progressives Congress State Chairmen has vowed that Nigerians and political stakeholders will resist any attempt to remove President Bola Tinubu from office.

The delegation of 37 state chairmen stated this at a media conference at the national secretariat of the APC in Abuja on Monday.

The APC chieftains’ warning was due to the growing tension generated by the anticipated August 1 to 10 #EndBadGovernance nationwide protest.

The demonstration, scheduled to run from August 1 to 10, has continued to generate tension and elicit mixed reactions from Nigerians

Several groups who indicated interest in championing the campaign said the call for protest was provoked by the soaring cost of living and economic hardship in the country.

Addressing newsmen in Abuja, Secretary of the APC States Chairmen Forum, Alphonsus Eba, warned that they wouldn’t fold their arms and watch some unscrupulous elements forcefully overthrow the current administration.

He said, “We call on all patriotic Nigerians to resist any attempt by anyone or any group of persons to intimidate them into unorganised protest likely to endanger the peace we currently enjoy as a nation.

“We call on patriots to join forces with security agencies to report any criminal element who attempts to carry out any act of violence.

“Against this background, in the next two weeks commencing from today 29th July to 11th August 2024 and from this press briefing, which shall follow with a solidarity rally by all structures of our party across all political wards, LGAs and states capital including Abuja FCT.”

The party’s chairmen vowed to embark on a counter-protest to hail Tinubu’s policies and reforms.

“We shall embark on a peaceful rally to re-echo the laudable projects and the programmes of President Tinubu with greater vigour to protect and defend our democracy from any attack by hoodlums or some criminal elements who want to carry out the violent protest.”

“All our party men and concerned Nigerians in other political parties, are enjoined to stand firm in the protection of democracy.

“It should be noted that violent protest being contemplated by the faceless group as contained in their charter of demand will annihilate the democratic ideals which all political parties subscribed to,” he concluded

Scientists discover metallic minerals on deep ocean as oxygen source

0

Scientists have discovered that metallic minerals on the ocean floor at 13,000 feet (3,962 meters) below the surface of the earth may produce oxygen.
The discovery by a group of academics has important consequences for our knowledge of Earth’s atmosphere and potential extraterrestrial life, challenging the long-held idea that oxygen is created primarily by photosynthetic organisms.
Before now, scientists believed that oxygen was a byproduct of life, specifically generated by photosynthesizing autotrophs such as plants and algae. However, the current study challenges that simplified story.

The discovery was so astounding that when lead author Andrew Sweetman first detected this “dark oxygen” in the Pacific Ocean’s Clarion-Clipperton Zone in 2013, he immediately discounted it.
“I just ignored it, because I’d been taught—you only get oxygen through photosynthesis,” Sweetman, an ecologist with the Scottish Association for Marine Science, tells Victoria Gill of BBC News. “Eventually, I realized that for years I’d been ignoring this potentially huge discovery.”

Ex-Ogun LG chairmen deny backing Wale Adedayo’s allegations against Abiodun

0

The immediate past local government chairmen in Ogun State have denied backing the former chairman of Ijebu East local government, Wale Adedayo’s allegation against governor Dapo Abiodun.
Adedayo had accused Abiodun of diverting allocations intended for 20 local government areas in the state.
TVN had reported that following that allegation, Adedayo was suspended and later impeached as the chairman of the local government.
The state government also dragged Adedayo to court over false allegations and defamation of character against Governor Abiodun.
However Adedayo on Saturday in an interview disclosed that the letter was written in agreement with 17 council chairmen under the aegis of the Association of Local Governments of Nigeria, ALGON.
He said his fundamental mistake was using his local government’s letterhead rather than that of the association and appending only his signature on it.
However, the former chairmen on Monday in a press conference held in Abeokuta, said Adedayo acted alone, describing him as a liar on a mission to pull others down.
Former chairman of the association, Babatunde Emilola-Gazal, said the letter was written without their involvement and they were only informed after he had sent it out.
“ The truth is that Wale acted alone and all efforts to make him allow for internal resolution of the crisis failed because he made it clear that he was acting in concert with external forces and wouldn’t do anything until he had a meeting with them.
“Wale is definitely acting a script and trying to pull down other people. He does not need to do this,” he said.
He asked Adedayo to stop “destroying people who tried to protect him,” stating that “it was inhumane to do so.”

South Africa’s ex-leader Zuma expelled from ruling ANC

0

South Africa’s ruling ANC on Monday expelled its former leader ex-president Jacob Zuma for leading a rival party into elections following disciplinary proceedings.

The African National Congress, which lost its absolute parliamentary majority for the first time in May largely due to Zuma’s defection, said the veteran politician’s conduct was “irreconcilable” with its constitution.

“Former President Jacob Zuma has actively impugned the integrity of the ANC and campaigned to dislodge the ANC from power while claiming that he had not yet severed his membership,” ANC Secretary General Fikile Mbalula told a press conference.

He was thus “expelled” from the party, Mbalula said.

The ANC first suspended the scandal-tainted ex-leader in January, after he endorsed the newly formed uMkhonto weSizwe (MK).

MK cut into the ANC’s share of votes in the May 29 elections, taking third place with 14.5 percent.

The ANC managed 40 percent in the May vote — its weakest score since it came to power three decades ago to replace the apartheid government.

The result forced it to form a coalition government with nine other parties. MK was left out and is leading the opposition, with 58 lawmakers in the 400-seat National Assembly.

MK, a populist, radical leftist party, initially disputed the election result.

“His platform is dangerous, appeals to extremist instincts in our body politic and riles up a political base that may foment social unrest,” Mbalula said of Zuma’s MK.

Zuma has been barred from serving as an MP because of a 2021 conviction for contempt of court.

After news of his upcoming expulsion was leaked, the party lashed out at the “grave injustices against its leader”.

“An examination of the leaked document reveals that the disciplinary process was not only not only profoundly flawed but also conducted in a manner akin to a kangaroo court,” said MK spokesman Nhlamulo Ndhlela.

Zuma will engage legal counsel to determine the course of action, he said.

The former president has 21 days to appeal the decision.

Zuma joined the ANC via its youth league as a teenager in 1959.

Elected South African president in 2009, he was forced from office in 2018 under the cloud of corruption allegations and was replaced by long-term rival, President Cyril Ramaphosa.

The charismatic and outspoken 82-year-old still carries considerable political clout in South Africa, even enjoying support within some factions of the ANC.

Many believed his political career would end when he was sentenced to 15 months in jail in June 2021 after refusing to testify to a panel probing financial corruption and cronyism under his presidency.

His imprisonment triggered riots that sparked South Africa’s worst episode of violence since the fall of apartheid, leaving more than 350 dead.

He spent only two months behind bars and was released for health reasons, after which Ramaphosa commuted his sentence.

Osun residents protest SIM blockage, cause traffic gridlock

0

Some angry residents of Osun State on Monday blocked the Oke Fia/Dele-Yes-Sir dual carriageway in Osogbo, the State capital, over MTN officials’ alleged refusal to attend to them early following the barring of their mobile lines.

Some of the displeased customers residing in the state who spoke to The According at the MTN Connect Store, which serves as the head office of the organisation in the state, located along the Oke Fia/Dele-Yes-Sir dual carriageway in Osogbo, said they came from different towns across the state when their lines were barred from the network.

They, however, said despite the fact that some of them arrived at the premises as early as 1:00 am, the officials of the organisation did not attend to their complaint early enough.

Venting their anger, the residents blocked the road, forcing many road users on the route to make a detour.

The arrival of operatives of Department of State Security, however, restored normalcy, as they directed the protesters to remove the barricade.

During a visit, our correspondent was told that those who were allowed inside the premises of Osogbo MTN Connect Store were those who registered their names on Saturday, while names of those coming to restore their lines on Monday were being compiled.

Aged, visibly sick, and pregnant women were, however, allowed into the premises to sit, waiting for their turn to be called inside the office to lodge their complaints.

Our correspondent also observed a vehicle belonging to DSS with about 5 operatives in uniform parked beside MTN premises

During an interview with our correspondent, a resident of Ikire, simply identified as Mrs Korede, said she arrived at the Osogbo MTN Connect Store around 5: 00 am and met a large number of people already waiting to be attended to.

“I got here around 5: 00 am. I came from Ikire. When I got here, I was told 114 people had registered before me. I didn’t see any list where names were written, but I was told I was number 114.

“This kind of experience is uncalled for. I have my NIN and linked it to my mobile line. I don’t know why my line was barred. Those you saw on the premises are those who wrote their names on Saturday. I was told some of us that came early today may still get our chance,” she said.

Also commenting, a commercial motorcyclist from Ikirun, Osun State, who refused to disclose his name to our correspondent, said at the MTN office in his town, there was already a large crowd when he got there around 7:00 am.

He further said, “Because of that, he decided to come to Osogbo, hoping I wouldn’t meet many people. I made the wrong conclusion. I have been here since 8:00 am. I was part of the protesters that blocked the road. I was told they started (the protest) around 7:00 am. We didn’t open it until around 9:00 am when DSS people came around and told us to remove the barricade.

“Some soldiers earlier came around but they didn’t wait. You can see the tension is high but the presence of security men is keeping the situation under control.”

Efforts by our correspondent to speak to the most senior officer in charge of the Osogbo MTN Connect Office failed as those approached with the request all claimed not to be employees of the organisation.

Police beef up security in Benue

0

The Benue State Police Command has deployed its men to strategic places in Makurdi, the state capital.

Our correspondent, who went around the city on Monday, reported the presence of policemen.

The presence of policemen in the capital city may be connected to the planned hunger protests across the country, which are expected to commence on August 1.

The state governor, Hyacinth Alia, said on Sunday that he had the assurances of various groups, including student unions, market groups, organised labour, and other civil society organisations, not to participate in hunger protests in all parts of the state.

Alia said that the state has experienced enough insecurity in recent times and that it would no longer be in its interest to witness another protest that may be hijacked by hoodlums.

“And I’m grateful to organised labour in the state, student union, market union and others  for being considerate not to participate in any protest that at the end of the day might be hijacked by hoodlums and our entire peace  destabilised,” Alia had said.

While reacting, the state command’s spokesperson, Catherine Anene, allayed the fear of Benue residents due to the huge presence of policemen within the town.

Anene said, “The presence of police officers across Makurdi today is not to scare citizens but to assure them of police presence and warn any hoodlum who intends to cause a breach of peace in the name of protest.”

Commuters, motorists decry delays in completion of Calabar-Uyo federal highway

0

The perennial delays witnessed in the reconstruction of the failed Calabar-Uyo federal highway have taken a toll on the health and resources of motorists, travellers and even residents of the road.
In the last two months, there have been vehicular breakdowns which compounded traffic snarls on the road as it has been for over ten years.
As a result, travellers have often spent five or six hours to Uyo from Calabar or from Calabar to Uyo in a journey that used to be one hour.
Over three weeks ago, following this heartrending and tortuous journey on this road, the Minister of Works, David Umahi took journalists to assess the extent of failures on the road.
Pained by the slow pace of work, he had ordered that contractors return to site within a week and resume work to ameliorate the plights and suffering of Nigerians on the only connecting link road to southeastern states.
One of the motorists, Akpan Moses, a frequent traveller on the road, said ever since the minister returned to Abuja, the contractors hardly work.
Moses said the rains have helped to completely make the dilapidated road impassable.
He said hundreds of trucks bearing bags of cement, granites, rods and other heavy objects often fall due to the terrible state of the road.
“And when this happens, traffic flow is blocked. Long queues of trucks and other vehicles would be seen and the health of passengers are usually threatened having spent hours on bad spots”, he said.
A community leader on the Odukpani axis of the road, Etinyin Ekpenyong Effiom said some of the land owners who protested nonpayment of compensations which partially accounted for delays, have now been paid, and they were no longer threatening the construction workers.
The motorists and commuters strongly appealed to the federal government to release outstanding funds to contractors to mobilize back to the portions which the different tractors are working on.
The minister had assured that the road would be completed by December 2024, but an official of one of the construction firms who pleaded anonymity said the government has not paid a substantial a substantial enough amount to enable them work effectively.

Okonkwo, others free to leave Obidient movement

0

The Peter Obi Support Network has acknowledged the recent departures of key supporters, such as Doyin Okupe, Isaac Balami, and Kenneth Okonkwo, from the group.

In a press statement on Sunday, co-convener of POSN, Tochukwu Ezeoke, stated that the group respects their commitment to a better Nigeria and recognises their freedom to leave the ‘Obidient’ movement.

Ezeoke affirmed that the 2023 presidential candidate of the Labour Party, Peter Obi, remains committed to advocating for a grassroots political party and a decisive leader with integrity.

He added that the Obidient movement anticipates further resignations from the ranks of 2023 campaign leaders. Obi’s stance is that leadership must avoid actions that could plunge the country into chaos.

The statement follows the recent departure of Okonkwo and others from the Labour Party.

The statement read in part: “Peter Obi and the Obidient Movement did not have access to unlimited state resources during the 2023 election, relying instead on the support of Nigerians at home and abroad.

“Peter Obi’s primary concern is the safety and well-being of ordinary Nigerians, even above his political aspirations. The stability of Nigeria is more important than the ambitions of any single candidate.

“In response to the 2023 election results, while some supporters called for radical action, Peter Obi wisely chose to engage with the system, thereby exposing its flaws. His message on 5 June 2024 reaffirmed the Obidient movement’s independence from the Labour Party, ensuring the continuity of our goal to transform Nigeria from a consumer to a producer nation.

“Our focus remains on ending the misgovernance of Tinubu’s APC government, as they cannot lead Nigeria to the promised land. Peter Obi is actively building strategic alliances aimed at unseating Tinubu and rebuilding Nigeria in the near future to position Nigeria among the global community of productive nations.”

The group insisted that the philosophy behind the Obidient Movement, established in 2018, guided its efforts from the Atiku/Obi campaign in 2019 through the LP/Obidient campaign in 2022-2023.

“Despite the Obi/Datti mandate being stolen in February 2023, our structure is diligently working towards future elections.

“We urge all Obidients who desire a new and better Nigeria to remain steadfast, and continue and deepen their engagements with families and neighbours on what a new Nigeria should look like and the path to achieving it.

“We expect more resignations from the ranks of 2023 campaign leaders. Nevertheless, we are confident that we speak for our partners and other groups in this struggle, assuring Nigerians that hope and engagement in the political process are vital. Our collective efforts and determination are crucial to Nigeria’s future.

“Long live the Obidient Movement. Long live the Federal Republic of Nigeria,” the group added.
