Dele Momodu tackles Fayose over comments on northerners

Veteran journalist and publisher of Ovation Magazine, Dele Momodu has called out former Ekiti State governor, Ayo Fayose over his comments about northerners.
Fayose had contended the failure of the federal government to develop Nigeria was because northerners were marrying multiple wives and having many children indiscriminately thereby constituting a huge problem for Nigeria and a burden on the government.
Fayose who made the comment in an interview programme with Channels Television on Monday night, said Nigerians should not embark on the planned #EndBadGovernance protests as the hunger in the country did not start under Tinubu but as a result of the huge population from the north.
“The reason why it is difficult for Tinubu to develop Nigeria is because Northerners are giving birth to children they can’t cater for,” Fayose had said, among other things.
But in a post on X on Tuesday, Momodu said Fayose had spoken out of turn and should caution himself.

“My dear Brother AYO FAYOSE, I have just two questions Sir: who is more destructive to the nation, the poor man with plenty wives and children or the politician with one wife and many high maintenance girlfriends, who waste public resources on extravagant lifestyles including private jets?” Momodu said.
“Who is more productive, the politician who steals the sweats and resources of the citizens or the poor man who sends his many poor wives and childten to the farmlands to grow crops for everyone of us!!!”

NARD gives FG two-week ultimatum to rescue kidnapped doctor

The Nigerian Association of Resident Doctors has issued a two-week ultimatum to the government for the unconditional release of its member, Dr Ganiyat Popoola, who was kidnapped seven months ago at the Senior Staff Quarters of the National Eye Centre, Kaduna.

NARD said industrial harmony cannot be guaranteed if her release is not secured within two weeks.

The doctors made this known in a communique issued on Tuesday after its National Executive Council meeting in Katsina from July 22 to 27, themed ‘The Nigerian economy and its impact on residency training: Challenges and Opportunities for a Robust healthcare system.’

The communique was signed by the association’s President, Dr Dele Abdullahi; the Secretary-General, Dr Christopher Anaduaka; and the Public and Social Secretary, Dr John Egbe.

Our correspondent gathered that Dr Popoola was abducted on December 27, 2023, at about 1 am within the Senior Staff Quarters at the National Eye Centre, Kaduna.

She was abducted with her husband, a Squadron leader, Nurudeen Popoola, and her nephew who stays with them, Folaranmi Abdul-Mugniy.

After several negotiations with the kidnappers, the husband was released on March 8, 2024, but the doctor and Abdul-Mugniy were not released.

It was also gathered that since the incident, the abductors have called severally at will and occasionally to allow some family members to speak to them, and they were spoken to last on Wednesday, July 24, 2024, to prove that the doctor and her husband’s nephew are still alive.

The NEC also observed with grave concern persistent manpower shortage, crippling our healthcare system despite different changes in the recruitment modalities, the casualisation of its members in different health institutions all over the country with consequent jeopardy to their welfare, and the non-payment of upward review of the Consolidated Medical Salary Structure arrears for all her members post-implementation in February 2024.

The communique partly read, “The NEC seriously frowned at the alarming increase in insecurities: Kidnapping and assault on doctors, threaten our very existence. The NEC observed with despair that our dear colleague, Dr Ganiyat Popoola and her nephew are still held in captivity for over seven months in inhumane conditions.

“The NEC decried their failing health while under captivity and the little to no efforts by the security agents to salvage the situation.

“The NEC decried the nonchalant attitude of the Kaduna state government to the travails of our colleague and her nephew.

“The NEC appreciates the government for the quick payment of 2024  MRTF albeit noticed that some centres and individuals are yet to receive payment.

“The NEC decries the unresolved outstanding issues of MRTF 2023, 2022, and 2021. The NEC observed with appreciation the promise made by the Governor of Abia state, Dr Alex Otti to pay an extra month’s salary every month to clear the 21 months owed salaries arrears of the ABSUTH Staff,”

The NEC, however, demanded an expedition in the process of waiver issuance by the Ministry of Health to cover the massive manpower deficits in health institutions, a cap on the work hours of healthcare professionals to prevent burnout, and additional pay for extra hours worked.

Labour Party fires back at Kenneth Okonkwo over attacks on Peter Obi won’t diminish trust

The Labour Party has responded to Kenneth Okonkwo’s resignation and criticism of Peter Obi, saying that such attacks will not erode the trust Nigerians have in the former Anambra governor.
In a statement signed by its National Publicity Secretary, Obiora Ifoh on Monday, the party dismissed Okonkwo’s comments as attention-seeking.
The party noted that Okonkwo’s resignation was not surprising, given his history of switching parties. They also accused him of being a mole planted to instigate crisis within the party.
The Labour Party reaffirmed its commitment to Peter Obi as its leader and presidential candidate for the 2027 election. They expressed confidence that Nigerians, particularly the “Obidients” and youths, will continue to trust Obi, despite coordinated attacks from some quarters.
It reads, “Kenneth Okonkwo’s resignation from the Labour Party didn’t come to us as a surprise. We also think that his attack on the party’s leader, Peter Obi is rather unfortunate however we will continue not to dignify him with any response as we understand that his attention-craving attitude knows no bounds.

“Needless to say Nigeria is not in want of political jesters and jobbers whose stomach are their gods. Labour Party is not perturbed by his decision to move on and in fact, we wish him well in his future endeavours, whether in acting, law practice, politics or otherwise.
“We also wish to note here, that the party is aware of a few other persons who are planted as moles, who are presently instigating crisis within the party, and who have unsuccessfully attempted to hijack the party for the use of their paymasters. We urge them to act fast and do the needful before they are exposed and fumigated out of the party.
“Labour Party is keeping to its decision to stand with Peter Obi as its leader and presidential hopefully come 2027 presidential election and we are not apologetical about that position. Education minister mourns NERDC boss, Ismail

The Minister of Education, Prof. Tahir Mamman, has mourned the Executive Secretary of the Nigerian Educational Research and Development Council, Prof. Junaidu Ismail.

In a terse statement posted on the official X handle of the ministry, @NigEducation, on Tuesday, Mamman described the late Junaidu as a “shinning star in the education sector.”

Junaidu reportedly died in the early hours of Thursday last week in Damaturu, Yobe State, where he was attending the Joint Consultative Committee on Education programme.

He was born on June 3, 1953 and obtained his qualifications in Linguistics and Language: PhD University of Indiana, USA; Master’s Degree University of York, England and Bachelor’s Degree, ABU, Zaria-Nigeria.

He was a Professor of Linguistics as well as Educator, Educational Administrator, Curriculum Developer, and Educational Policy Facilitator and Designer.

Mamman was quoted as saying, “A shining star in Nigeria’s education sector has gone dark. Our thoughts are with his family, NERDC, and the countless lives he touched.

“His legacy will continue to inspire us.

“Let’s honour his memory by continuing his great work in education. Prof Junaidu’s impact on Nigeria’s education sector will be felt for generations to come! Let’s celebrate his life and legacy.”

NCAA cracks down on private jet operators over submission of technical logs

The Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA) has issued a stern warning to private jet operators, mandating the submission of detailed technical logs before August 2nd or face suspension.
The move is a clear indication of the aviation regulator’s determination to enhance safety standards among the private jet owners.
In a statement on Monday signed by Oyerinde Modupe, NCAA general manager (GM) of facilitation and economic regulation, the aviation authority said failure to comply with the directive will result in the suspension of operating authorisation of jet operators.
“This is to follow up on the Nigeria Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA) previous correspondence regarding the submission of your tech log for the past two (2) years,” the aviation authority said.
It continued, “The authority is yet to receive the required documents from you.
“Therefore, in line with part (g) of the conditions attached to your Permit, you are again reminded to forward to the NCAA the Tech Log information of your operations for the last two (2) years by completing the Summary Sheet with details of number of Sectors flown per month per aircraft as indicated in the attached PNCF OPERATIONS TECH LOG FORM.

“Please note that the format for submission of the requested information should either be electronic completion of the PNCF Tech Log Form or scan copies of the required Tech Log information to this email datrlicensingunit@ncaa.gov.ng.

Deji Adeyanju warns army chief against deploying soldiers

Activist and human rights lawyer Deji Adeyanju has urged the Chief of Army Staff, Lt. Gen. Taoreed Lagbaja, to withdraw soldiers deployed across the Federal Capital Territory and other cities ahead of the proposed hunger protest.

The According had reported the increased presence of security agents, including military personnel, within the Federal Capital Territory ahead of the proposed nationwide protests slated for August 1 to 10.

The Director of Defence Media Operations, Maj Gen Edward Buba, denied that the deployment was intended to intimidate protesters. He said, “Troops have always been deployed across the country in counter-terrorism and counter-insurgency operations. There is nothing new about that (deployment), please.”

However, in a letter addressed to the Chief of Army Staff on Tuesday, Adeyanju stated that providing security during protests is the job of the police.

He recalled that the deployment of soldiers for protests in Kenya and during the 2020 #EndSARS movement led to riots.

Adeyanju said, “We write as a pro-human rights law firm to draw your attention to the disturbing deployment of men of the Nigerian Army across the Federal Capital Territory and other cities to suppress the scheduled August 1, 2024, national protest.

“The task of providing internal security, including the protection of protesters during the scheduled protest, lies with the Nigerian Police Force and not the Nigerian Army.
You may also recall that at all times when the armed forces intervened in any protest, including the recent ongoing Kenya protest, such protests often escalated into full-blown riots leading to loss of lives and property.

“It is on the premise of the foregoing that we urge you to withdraw your men back to the barracks as we do not want a repeat of soldiers killing protesters as was witnessed during EndSARS.”

The Senior Presidential Media Aide, Tunde Rahman, said on Tuesday that there is no bad governance in Nigeria.

Rahman stated this at the Second Lateef Jakande Annual Memorial Lecture at Radisson Blu, Ikeja, Lagos.

“They tagged the protest ‘End Bad Governance,’ and I don’t think there’s any bad governance here,”

“I’ve seen headlines like ‘Hardship Protest’ and ‘Hunger Protest,’ and I think those (headlines) are editorialised,” he told the audience, largely dominated by editors and media professionals.

He further claimed that the organisers of the August 1, 2024, planned protests “are faceless.”

Rahman’s comments elicited mixed reactions from the attendees at the event organised by the Nigerian Guild of Editors.

He appealed to Nigerians to be patient with President Bola Tinubu as he addressed the country’s economic challenges.
The Take It Back Movement, one of the organisers of the nationwide protest scheduled for Thursday, has affirmed its intention to proceed.

In response, security agencies, including the police, military, and civil defence, have deployed officers across states and the Federal Capital Territory, Abuja, to ensure security during the planned protests.

The hashtag “EndBadGovernanceInNigeria” continues to trend on X as Nigerians await developments from Thursday.

Long queues of commercial buses, private cars, motorcycles and tricycles have returned to petroleum stations in Ibadan, the Oyo State capital.
Our correspondent reports that this is due to the ongoing scarcity of petrol in the ancient city.
TVN reports that Ibadan has been witnessing a scarcity of PMS in the last few days.
The situation became severe on Monday when the majority of the petroleum stations shut down their operations.
Petroleum stations in areas visited on Monday and Tuesday such as Bodija, Sango, Apete, Sango/ Eleyele Road, Agodi Gate and Secretariat Road have shut down their operations since Monday.
This is responsible for the long queues being witnessed across the ancient city.
TVN reports that only a few of the petroleum stations that belong to independent marketers in these areas are selling between N800 and N850.
It was, however, observed that petroleum stations that belong to the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation Limited, NNPCL, have continued to sell for N580 per litre.
Our correspondent reports that the situation has remained the same as of the time of filing this report on Tuesday.
A commercial cab operator who spoke with TVN in the Sango area noted that petrol stations he visited recently were selling between N800 and N850.
He said, “We are buying between N800 and N850. That is what they are selling to us. Some of the ones that were selling before are not selling again”.

NAPTIP arrests 115 for human trafficking in A’Ibom, others

The National Agency for the Prohibition of Trafficking in Persons has apprehended no fewer than 115 suspected human traffickers and rescued 75 victims in Akwa Ibom, Cross River, and Rivers states.

The Zonal Commander of NAPTIP, Emmanuel Awhen, disclosed this in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria in Uyo on Tuesday.

The Zone comprises Akwa Ibom, Cross River, and Rivers states.

“Between July 2023 and now, we’ve apprehended 115 human traffickers within the zone and rescued about 75 victims.

“Out of the 75 victims rescued, we have empowered 25 of them with skills in tailoring, hairdressing, barbing, and shoe making.

“Most of the victims rescued are kept in our shelter and we’ve counselled, empowered, and reunited them with their families,” the NAPTIP commander said.

He added that during the period, NAPTIP charged 15 cases to court and secured three convictions, while 12 cases are still pending.

The zonal commander appealed to judges to give special attention to human trafficking cases to serve as a deterrent to other traffickers.

Awhen said that coastal communities in the zone are endemic areas of human trafficking.

According to him, a lot of human trafficking victims have been rescued in the coastal areas.

“We appeal to members of the public that this fight against human trafficking should not be left in the hands of NAPTIP and the Federal Government alone.

“The agency needs the support and cooperation of all stakeholders so that together we can fight this crime.

“We have financial constraints to carry out robust sensitisation and campaigns against human trafficking, especially to rural communities, and feeding of victims is very expensive now,” he said.

Awhen advised parents and guardians not to let their family members deceive them and take their children and wards on the pretext of helping to train or secure employment for them.

He said that most often such children or wards end up being used for child labour or prostitution.

The zonal commander warned traffickers to desist from such acts, stressing that “anyone found culpable, the full weight of the law would be applied on such”.

NAN reports that the World Day Against Trafficking in Persons is marked on July 30.

The theme for this year is; “Leave No Child Behind in the Fight Against Human Trafficking.”

Awhen said that this year’s global campaign urges accelerated action to end child trafficking.

According to him, children represent a significant proportion of victims trafficked worldwide, with girls being disproportionately affected.

A member of the All Progressives Congress National Working Committee, Tolu Bankole, has expressed concerns over the safety of Persons With Disabilities ahead of the planned nationwide protest.

Bankole, the ruling party’s national leader saddled with the responsibility of attending to PWDs, made the plea in a statement issued in Abuja on Tuesday.

The #EndBadGovernance demonstration, scheduled to run from August 1 to 15, has continued to generate tension and elicit mixed reactions from Nigerians.

Several youths have also indicated interest in turning up for the exercise, which was provoked by the soaring cost of living and economic hardship in the country.

But Bakonle pleaded with both the protest organisers and the Federal Government to exercise restraint and embrace dialogue.

The APC chieftain also appealed to Nigerian youths to jettison the idea of mass action and consider the fate of physically challenged persons who may be stranded as a result of the protest.

He said, “The risk of such demonstrations being hijacked and spiralling into violence is significant, and I stress that our priority should be to engage in constructive dialogue with government officials at all levels. We must avoid a repetition of the unfortunate violence witnessed during the EndSARS movement.

 

“Persons with disabilities are among the most vulnerable in our society, and any violence or disruption from protests could have disproportionately adverse effects on them. It is therefore imperative that we advocate for peaceful methods of engagement to ensure their safety and well-being.

“President Bola Tinubu has implemented several policies aimed at revitalizing our economy and improving the standard of living for all Nigerians. I call on all stakeholders to channel their energies into meaningful dialogue and collaboration with the government, rather than risking escalation into violence. Together, we can work towards positive change while safeguarding the rights and lives of every Nigerian.”
