Igbo lawyers praise Tinubu, Kalu for S’East devt commission, condemn protests

0

A civil society group, League of Igbo Youth Lawyers, has hailed the Deputy Speaker, House of Representatives, Rt. Hon. Benjamin Kalu, for his efforts, which gave birth to the passage of the bill for the establishment of the South East Development Commission, and its assent by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu last Wednesday.

In a communique issued in Awka, the Anambra State capital on Tuesday and signed by its National Secretary, Obinnaya Asiegbu, the group noted that the SEDC, which bill was sponsored by Kalu, who represents Bende federal constituency in the House of Representatives was a landmark achievement for which the lawmaker has distinguished himself in the service of Ndi Igbo.

The communique observed that the Igbo homeland had been abandoned in the aftermath of the civil war, leading to neglect and absence of infrastructure and development in the region.

Also, the President of the group, Stanley Okafor, assured that the group would seek greater collaboration with the South-East caucus of the National Assembly as a means of making concrete and realistic developmental matters affecting the region.

Okafor, however, distanced the group and its members from the planned nationwide protests slated for August 1, arguing that Igbo youths had nothing to protest about this time, given the lack of proper integration of Igbos within the national socio-political framework.

He said, “We would work to distance Igbo youths from the planned protests for us to avoid the usual scapegoat retribution usually meted out against our people.

“Let our sister regions lead the self-expressions if they may, while we focus on persuading the government to do the right thing, and to grant freedom to detained Nnamdi Kanu.”

Senate frowns at N4.2bn personnel cost for Ajaokuta steel

0

The  Senate has frowned at the N4.2bn appropriated in the 2024 budget as personnel cost for unverifiable workers at the Ajaokuta Steel Company Limited.

The alleged unverifiable nature of workers at the non-functional steel company , came to the fore during an investigative hearing on the alleged incidences of corruption and inefficiency at the Ajaokuta Steel Company Limited and National Iron Ore Mining Company from 2002 to date, by an Ad-hoc committee of the Senate.

The Deputy Chairman of the Committee, Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan (PDP Kogi Central), took up the Sole Administrator of the Steel Company, Summaila Abdul-Akaba, on the number of workers collecting salaries from the N4.2bn appropriated for personnel cost in the 2024 budget.

She stated that as an indigene of the area desirous to get the steel company revamped and working, she often makes unscheduled visits to the plant and hardly finds 10 people at work.

She lamented that despite such humongous amount of money being spent as personnel cost by the steel company yearly, no steel has been manufactured and no mill rolled.

Akpoti-Uduaghan said, “The sole administrator of Ajaokuta Steel Company, I have a good question for you being an indigene from the area, who is very worried about the state of the company and passionate for its revival .

“The sum of N4.2bn was appropriated for personnel cost in 2024 but from several visitations I’ve made to the complex, hardly were 10 people sighted to be around or doing anything.

“So, who are the workers collecting monthly salaries from the appropriated N4.2bn? Statistically, if N300,000 is paid monthly to 14,000 people per month for a year, you get N4.2bn or N500,000 to 8,400 workers per month in a year.”

Natasha further queried,  “Where are the 14,000 or 8,400 workers in Ajaokuta that the appropriated N4.2bn is being spent on?

“But in an embarrassment saving move, the minority whip of the Senate who is also a member of the committee, Senator Osita Ngwu (PDP Enugu West), prevented the sole administrator from responding to Natasha’s question.

Ngwu in his interjection, said, “Please don’t let us indict ourselves because the said appropriation was approved by the National Assembly.”

In his closing remarks at the investigative hearing, the Chairman of the Ad-hoc Committee, Senator Adeniyi Adegbonmire (APC Ondo Central), said presentations and submissions made by the various stakeholders would be thoroughly looked into by the committee for a solution to Ajaokuta Steel Company.

Key stakeholders at the investigative hearing include the permanent secretary of Ministry of Mines and Steel Development, a director from the Central Bank of Nigeria, a director from Bureau of Public Enterprises, Nigerian Society of Engineers, Steel and Engineering Union Workers of Nigeria, etc.

Middle Belt youths withdraw from hunger protest

0

The Middle Belt youths have announced their withdrawal from the proposed nationwide hunger protest.

This is as the youths, under the North Central Youth Council, urged the Federal Government to address the rising cost of living in the country.

The protest, scheduled to be held from August 1 to 10, is in response to the hardship experienced by citizens in the country.

Addressing journalists on Tuesday in Abuja, the group’s National President, Sunday Asuku, said the protest could not solve the problems confronting the country.

Although he admitted that times are hard in the country, he urged all Nigerians to support the government to succeed.

He said, “In lieu of the aforementioned, the leadership of North Central Youth Council hereby dissociates and distances itself from the purported national protest as it doesn’t promise to solve in any way the artificial problems facing us as a country.

“As much as we fully agree that the country is passing through hard times, our unity and support for the government to succeed should be concerted while we keep working, praying and hoping for a better Nigeria.

“Rome, they say, was not built in a day; no right-thinking man would expect a decadence of over 24 years to be fixed in less than two years. This is impossible.”

Asuku urged youths from the region not to join the protests, stating that the country was in a fragile period.

He said, “All Indigenous youths from the North Central region of Nigeria is by this press briefing advised and warned not to join any protest in the name of hunger, insecurity or whatsoever, especially at this fragile period when the atmosphere is tensed, any action capable of undermining our peaceful coexistence as a country should be outrightly and vehemently rejected..”

He, however, appealed to the government to address the rising cost of living in the country.

Asuku said, “While we see, feel and understand the government’s efforts to stabilize the dwindling economy, we also appeal passionately that they put in more measures capable of addressing the rising costs of living.

“We shall continue to monitor heads of MDAs, Ministries, Agencies, etc, to ensure they are not sabotaging the frantic efforts of the government for their gains. The leadership of North Central Youth Council shall not hesitate to expose them forthwith.”

Police van torched, officers injured in UK after fatal stabbings

0

Disorder erupted Tuesday night outside a mosque in Southport, UK, following a knife attack that left three girls dead in the Merseyside town.

A police van was set on fire, and officers were injured during the chaos.

A group of masked men in hoodies clashed with officers, chanting “English till I die” before violence ensued.

Police suspect the men are affiliated with the far-right English Defence League.

The disorder comes after the Home Secretary Yvette Cooper urged social media users not to spread “false information” about Monday’s attack or the suspect online.

A 17-year-old boy has been arrested for the stabbings at a Taylor Swift-themed dance event. Police have not confirmed his identity due to his age but have said he was born in the UK.

There is no suggestion he is a Muslim.

Merseyside Police has said a large group of people began throwing objects at the mosque on St Luke’s Road at around 7.45 pm this evening.

Officers later put on helmets and riot gear as bottles and wheelie bins were thrown at them.

A police officer suffered a broken nose, others have minor injuries and one of the force’s vans was set on fire.

The force said additional patrols were later sent to the scene including a dog unit.

Assistant Chief Constable Alex Goss said that many of the people involved in tonight’s violence do not live in Merseyside or care about the people who live in the county, says Sky News.

He added, “There has been much speculation and hypothesis around the status of a 17-year-old male who is currently in police custody and some individuals are using this to bring violence and disorder to our streets.

“We have already said that the person arrested was born in the UK and speculation helps nobody at this time.

“Our officers should not have to face this, but we will be there tonight to ensure the safety of the local community who have suffered enough, and will arrest those involved in criminal behaviour.”

The situation outside the mosque appeared to have calmed down as dark descended, with numbers on the street having thinned.

Ms Cooper said it was “appalling” police officers in Southport were facing attacks from “thugs on the streets who have no respect for a grieving community”, adding: “It’s a total disgrace”.

Merseyside Police Chief Constable Serena Kennedy said, “I am incredibly proud of my officers and staff who have worked so hard to save the lives of children, investigate the horrific incident from yesterday, working with partners to provide reassurance to our communities and now they are facing this level of violence from these thugs.”

Police were called to a premises on Hart Street in Southport shortly before midday on Monday after 11 children and two adults were stabbed.

Three of the children later died and have been named as six-year-old Bebe King, seven-year-old Elsie Dot Stancombe, and nine-year-old Alice Dasilva Aguiar.

Court restricts #EndBadGovernanance protesters to Freedom, Peace Parks

0

Justice Emmanuel Ogundare of the Lagos State High Court, Ikeja, on Tuesday, restricted the #EndBadGovernance protesters to the Gani Fawehinmi Freedom Park in Ojota.
They are also confined to the Peace Park in the Ketu area of the state.
The judge gave the order while ruling on an ex parte application filed by the Lagos State Attorney-General and Commissioner for Justice, Lawal Pedro.
Pedro had in his application said he has been privy to notices by different interests on the protest and stressed the need to protect the infrastructure of the state and prevent irreparable loss of lives and properties as witnessed during the October 2020 #ENDSARS protest in the state.
He argued that the move was to prevent the demonstration from being hijacked by hoodlums who were prepared to breach law and order and cause destruction in different parts of the under the guise of protest.
In his ruling, the judge held that the protest slated to take place from August 1 to 10 should only be held within the approved locations and between 8:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m., pending compliance with the “pre-action protocol by the claimant.”
He also ordered the police to protect the rights of protesters within the approved locations and time for protests, rallies, and meetings in the state.
